Just wondering if anyone's tried a scenario that requires a certain wonder as a prerequisite to building another wonder. Is there any way to implement this without really unbalancing the game?

It's definitely been done, but don't count on it being too balanced if both wonders have extreme benefits.

You may also want to contemplate using a small wonder or palace as a requirement for a wonder, just to shake things up.

Sure you can set a Wonder as a Requirement to be able to Build another Wonder.
That Requirement could be used to facilitate building another Wonder that you do not want built until after the First Wonder has been built and that is also desired to be built in the Same City.

I use this in EFZI2 for the above reasons so these things do have their Place.

Kulade is referring more to Game Balance of a City having another Wonder, rather than IF it can be done. The Game Balance all depends on What you do with it...Naturally, this includes any Wonder Settings, along with anything you adjust or have in your game.

I was thinking along the lines of the first wonder having a detrimental side effect (such as reduced happiness) to offset the playability issues.

The Final Fantasy mod uses this feature.... In order to build the Black Materia GW, which is that mod's equivalent of the Manhattan Project, you have to control the city that the Temple of the Ancients GW (the FF mod's equivalent of the Great Library) and build the Black Materia in that city.

Of course, this isn't too unbalancing, due to the fact that it doesn't matter WHO builds the Black Materia, EVERYONE will be able to "summon" Meteor (build that mod's equivalent of an ICBM).....

The reason I set things up that way is to make the mod more canoniacal with the Final Fantasy games (the Temple of the Ancients in Final Fantasy VII was where the Black Materia was kept, and the Black Materia allowed whoever controlled it to summon Meteor.)

AndrewG... The Wonder Settings are your decision according to what you want them to do in your game...Positive or Negative affects are your choice and it is also ok to have more than one positive Wonder in a City.
There are no "Balanced Game" settings that can be stated absolutely for all games so if you want to add something for your Game, do it and go for the So Called Game Balance that you want in your game :)
