I finally did it. After over a year of tiring Acken with the same questions over and over again I finally got an SV from Babylon on immortal under turn 250. The most important factors were:
1. Food caravans to all cities all the time. The expos had lackluster food so I had to do this to grow.
2. Buy labs/schools/unis ASAP instead of building them. 10 turns of +50% research shaves a lot of time off.
3. Don't wait too long to start bulbing - I started with 20 techs left and still wasted one GS.
4. Faith/culture are very important, don't ignore.
5. Barbs are good - they provide free workers/xp/influence. Turning them on gave me 4 free workers, a CS ally, and prolly pushed me under t250.
6. Early in the game pick 2-3 CS and ally them for rest of game; really helps with happiness.
7. Mountains are a must for observatories.
8. Turn milestones: education t95, ST t150, plastics t190.
Thanks to all who gave me help and advice. I can't believe how far I've made it from a t360 SV just 2 years ago.
