Have you ever seen......

a Civilization give back a conquered city that they elicited you to help destroy?

I am in a marathon and Morocco came to me about attacking Rome. I said sure, "give me 10 turns". I had previously tried to knock Rome in order to get salt, but did not have the manpower or technology.

I finally had cannon capability and still had a need for salt. With cannons blaring, I end Rome's reign. I did not want to deal Antium and decided to give Morroco it as they were down to only their capital. Trying hard to work the diplomatic angle lately.

Anywho, I end my turn and upon Morroco's turn, Antium pops back with Rome's colors.

Maybe Rome Reconquered it, or Morocco give it back to Rome in peace deal.

Very interesting . Yes maybe Rome reconquered maybe? Or yes if Morocco was weaker militarily they might of said since you were out of the war they have no chance . So the AI said better to give it back. That makes more sense to me. You don 't go from war to let me sell you a city.
