The Importance of National Wonders

Foreign Legions are very good to have in a pinch, especially since they upgrade to infantry. That's pretty much a safe bet you won't get attacked late game

Funny, but I tend to forget about the mechas, even I am practically finished by the time that tech gets unlocked

Foreign Legions upgrade to Infantry and retain their unique promotion.

The unique promotion is offset by having 0 xp. If they are not your first tier 2 pick, you need 720 gold to upgrade the lot. That is usually a challenge for me!

The tenet itself permanently increased the free unit count even if you gifted them to city states.

Yeah, but what is the value of that? 18 gpt? Seems kind of weak. FL as my first tier 2 pick have saved a few games for me. FL as my second tier 2 pick are just not so compelling. The +4 to GP plots and landmarks very much competes for my interests.

But this is what I like best about Freedom: three awesome tier 2 picks.

Yeah those foreign legions are good if plan is only opening Freedom just to get SoL and units before switching to popular ideology.

You are probably thinking why would I want to do that if I`d lose culture? Well consider this, no one has opened Freedom yet so that`s 2 free tenets and will get you SoL with ease and that gives you, beside awesome 1+ :c5production: to each specialist, another free social policy with which you unlock FL and then switch to a popular ideology which is going to be either Order or Autocracy(most of the time) anyway...In this case you will only lose 1 tenet after switching which would mean no loss at all since someone has already unlocked this particular ideology and in case there are already 2 pioneers you would even get a bonus:)

In my case...going permanent Freedom, New deal and Universal suffrage are always a priority tier 2 tenets.

It shouldn't be. You should be swimming in gold at that point of the game iirc

I think those are the best two ways to approach Freedom. If permanent Freedom, do you always pick ND before US or vice-versa? If permanent Freedom, do you usually get around to a third tier 2 tenet? If so, do you bother with the six FL?

Yes, well all the gold I don't have went to rushing labs, and I can’t afford that either. I really need to try working Commerce into my games!

I've found only two ways to secure yourself the popular ideology:

1. Have everyone else love it and/or make it official at the congress
2. Wait until everyone else picked and conform

Switching ideologies is a kind of a bad idea in a science game, because you have a pretty limited number of SPs you can use and not enough time to use them all.

at 920 gold, in a pinch I usually save up for 3 schools and build it in the cap if my cap would have good production anyway. Similar for RLabs. It's important to get markets and banks up fairly early and to know when to stop feeding with internal trade routes.

That depends on how I`m doing with happiness :) ND is really a good boost on academies, manufactories and landmarks...although I prefer using GE for wonders but sometimes you just need it due to lack of hammers.

Regarding third tier 2 tenet my answer is no. I never get there when following Freedom. Most likely I will pick...

tier 1: Avant Garde, Civil Society, Capitalism
tier 2: New Deal, Universal Suffrage
tier 3: Space Procurement

And that is where it stops. If I happen to have extra culture, I will rather go into either Patronage or Commerce depends on the situation...

I always get
National College
Oxford University
Writer's Guild
Artist's Guild
National Epic

I usually get:
Circus Maximus
Ironworks

I find Ironworks to be exceptional to boost your production and I built it as soon as I get all my workshops up (which is usually pretty early but after the Universities.

I agree with you that you can skip Circus Maximus if you are not having any trouble with happiness.

I often am also counting on the Foreign Legion troops. If you get them as your first T2 pick, they are cutting edge. If you get them as your second T2 pick, they will be close to obsolete.

Man... in one multiplayer game, I used OU to get Radio. The other humans dogpiled me as a knee-jerk reaction to what, to them, was a massive lead. (It wasn't; we were all pretty equal on production and beakers, with my tech beeline leaving them with more balanced military.)

As their armies forced me back in the field, upon reaching firing range of my cities they found themselves assailed by sallying troops so futuristic, they may as well have been chaos space marines. Good times :D

Why not build them side by side? Research metal casting, build stables/forge/workshops in expos, plus some trade units in cap. Get education, rush buy 1, and when the last workshop is done, immediately build Ironworks in cap after university. Might slow your tech a little, but gives you more time to buy cheap religious buildings before going into renaissance. Plus you pretty much win World's Fair. I've tried this many times on Immortal and twice on Deity with Shoshone and Germany.
