[Wine] Civ4 in Wine 1.1.25 on Ubuntu 9.04

I need some help, can't get Civilization 4 to start up.

I got the latest Wine (1.1.28) and followed the instructions on this thread and this one:

But it won't start up the game, the splash screen is there and it is loading, but then Wine comes up with this error you can see in the attachment.

I wanna buy a laptop soon, so if I can get Civilization 4 to work on my desktop here, I won't buy Windows at all with it. ;-)

I had a problem at the step of installing the Civ 4 Vanilla Patch. My CPU usage shot to maximum, and while the intallshield wizard came up, it went nowhere, even freezing part of my desktop image to its window. :yuck: I did everything up to there exactly. I'm running a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04. Civ 4 program on its own seems to work fine, btw.

Problem fixed itself (almost).

I tried to install BTS which failed fatally, but after I tried that, vanilla Civ4 works!

Kinda weird.
 
I hope that someone else can become the torchbearer for awhile as I don't have Ubuntu/Linux loaded anymore. I will again someday but not for now.

2 Things:

1) I think there might be something wrong with the way you followed the instructions. Wine shouldn't be opening in a emulated virtual desktop - last time I read through the instructions (unless they've changed maybe?). I doubt this is your problem, but it may be an indication that other persistent settings from an old ~/.wine configuration directory or something else is going on.

2) You really should capture the error messages from your terminal window as you run the program. That will be more helpful in tracking down the problem. Then you can look for lines that start with "err:" and do searches for them in google. It may not give you the answer right away, but I have found that it gets me on the right path.

I don't have Civ4 installed right now, but hey, hope this helps.

I never got the Civ4 BTS patch to install properly. I can't remember what the error was at this point, but if you scroll up in this thread its here somewhere. Eventually I got around it by installing everything except that (to make sure all the registry settings were there) and then rsyncing everything over from a working windows installation with BTS installed.

Meh... not pretty. But I was playing Civ4 after that... so ... yeah.

I've managed to install Civ IV but I cannot launch it. The civ splash screen gets stuck in the Init Python phase and nothing more happens. Any suggestion on how to solve it?

Do you have Beyond the Sword? Because then try to install that, it helped my installation to run. How, I don't know...
 
i bought civ 4 complete today, mainly for my desktop (only have civ 4 vanilla on it) running xp, but i thought i would have a go at sticking it on the laptop.

everything has worked great, except when i run the game (any of them), the graphics are very strange. they're alomst there. but only parts are visible. also, if i scroll the screen, the graphics that are there create "ghost" images across the screen. it could be an issue with my graphics card (Intel GMA X3100), but the menus are perfect, and the game doesn't run particularly slowly, but then it really isn't displaying any graphics

i know it's not a great setup, but i'm not fussed about playing at the lowest graphics settings, or even if the gameplay is slow (2ghz celeron processor, 2gb ram) it would just be nice if i could run it.

anyone have any ideas?

notice how the menus are pretty much perfect.

btw, in the 3rd shot, the desktop was revealed by my dragging the create screenshot window around.

btw, at first i was using wine version 1.1.29, but i downgraded to 1.1.25 as stated in the guide.

also, i can't get it to run as win2000, i can only get it to run as xp.


update: i wiped my wine folder and tried to install civ 4 on its own, (not the complete version) and updated it to 1.74. it stgill does the same thing, which makes me think it's my graphics setup that's causing the problems.
 
Oh man - you're so close. I'm not sure what would be more frustrating - being that close where you can taste it or not having it load at all.

I found that this guy reported the same err: on the main Ubuntu forums here. From my quick skim of that thread you can use regedit to create the following key which may help you out:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D]
"VideoMemorySize"="128"

It seems from my brief reading that "Civ Complete" is a whole other beast. In regard to following the instructions at the beginning of this thread and using the advice here it might be hit and miss.

In your shoes I would concentrate first on google searching for the err: messages in your terminal window and seeing if anyone else has those problems either with Civ 4, or otherwise with other games.

Good luck! Do be sure to come back and tell us all if this works! (I know - it's hard not to just get conquering the world once you finally get it running).
 
I think I just really botched this up. :(:(:(

I already had wine installed, and before I found this thread I did a regular install. It installed but wouldn't work. I found this thread. Then, for some reason I didn't see the big Un install App in the Menus and tried deleting the program files folder, all registry entries pointing to it, and the Installsheild director for it. now BTS will unistall fine, but Civ 4 won't and the Install Disc says it's already installed. :blush: Help???
 
I still cannot play Civ 4 on Ubuntu Jaunty despite having done all the instructions in this page. It hangs on the Init Python module in the initialization splash screen. What can be happening? Is there a wine python module or library that was supposed to be installed before trying to run Civ 4? Thanks!

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit with wine 1.1.32 on my AMD laptop that has run Vista and Civ all versions essentially flawless for years. I installed Civ 4 complete and installed the 3.19 patch (that's the only patch required for civ4 complete). I got my install of Civ 4 to work with Ubuntu using the instructions posted here except for the following;

I had to install msxml32 using winetricks.

I currently do not have d3dx9_26 overridden. (It doesn't seem to be causing any problems whether if its overridden or not).

All versions of Civ IV (Vanilla, Warlords, BTS) need to be run in an emulated XP desktop with 1024 x 768 resolution and my Ubuntu desktop needs to be in 1280 x 800 resolution.

System specs are Dual Core AMD Turion x64 1.8 Ghz with 2 GB DDR2 and ATI Radeon Mobility HD 2600 512GB DDR2. This system has run Civ IV with Vista very well for years.

My problem is a display issue and is as follows;

I can get Civ 4 to run with/without an emulated desktop. It'll go through the 2K screen, Nvidia screen, and through the intro movie and look awesome. Then it gets to the main menu and that's when it gets squirrely.

In a non-emulated desktop, or with an emulated desktop that has the same dimensions as my Ubuntu desktop the main title screen will load but it will look all chopped up, either way it is unusable. The only way I can get Civ 4 to work is by running an Ubuntu desktop of 1280 x 800 and an emulated windows desktop of 1024 x 768.

I have downloaded and installed the current proprietary linux drivers for my card from ATI (latest update around Oct 19, 2009). I followed the instructions step by step except I did not uninstall the previous drivers because this was a brand new install of Ubuntu on this machine and there were "apparently" no previous drivers installed.

Aside from this, the few times I've gotten BTS to run at full resolution (1280 x 800) it's looked beautiful, but if I punch out of my game at all I need to ensure that I put the resolution back to 1024 x 768, otherwise things will get fairly rocky. I'm just looking for any advice to get this install working as well as possible.
 
Anyone manage to get this running with an ATI card and Linux? I installed it in about 10-15 minutes on my PC (Nvidia Card), no problem. My laptop (ATI Radeon X1200), however, has given me numerous issue. It seems that Wine in general doesn't agree with ATI cards. Some people have had luck with the fglrx drivers, however, not everyone has. In addition for my particular card it looks like I would need older drivers (the newer ones do not support my card from what I understand) and older drivers do not work with the latest version of X Windows. I could downgrade X Windows but it's just simply not worth the effort to me.

Anyone have other ideas or suggestions? I'll post my wine error messages later when I have the chance.
 
I get prompted for a CD after installing BTS 3.19.

Anyone else have a similar problem? I thought that I didn't need a CD with BTS.
