(Mods: Please don't move this to AOG, I'd like it to stay in IOT because everyone involved in its creation is here)

Unfortunately: most of the following post is massively, massively out of date. I'll update it when I get back home in a few days.

OLD POST

So as I said in Argentina, I've been annoyed by the lack of major althist mods for EU4 so far, so I've decided to try my hand at creating one for myself. It'll also give me an excuse to actually play EU4. This mod will more than likely stay in planning/preliminary stages until Art of War gets released.

My idea is that this takes place in a world where Alexander the Great lived another decade or two, allowing him to consolidate his conquests into an empire - the Argean Empire - that remains stable for several centuries and become akin to OTL Rome, and ultimately slowly declines until it collapses about a millennium before 1444. My goal is to strike a nice balance between plausibility and fun (with plenty of fanservice) Here's what I have so far, with help from Cived, Reus, and NinjaCow:

Spoiler :

-I'm going to selectively gently caress butterflies such that Christianity and Islam both still exist, mostly to make actually modding this significantly easier. However, they are both far removed from their OTL counterparts. Christianity moves east, to become the major religion of Persia and Central Asia. Islam, which is blocked by Christianity from spreading in that direction, instead moves west and into Southern and Western Europe.
-Different migrations. These include the Huns, Magyars, other Central Asian peoples, and maybe even some Slavs and a Germanic tribe or two, all migrating into China instead of Europe, and only southern China is Han Chinese anymore. I might did throw in a Hellenized Chinese state just for Christos.
-Loads upon loads of pagans, including Hellenized Vikings (just for mech) and Norse Greeks.
-Vinland survives, and through trade and contact with the Norse, the Amerindians in the Mississippi watershed form flourishing civilizations.

Spoiler Requisite Soundtrack 1 :

Spoiler Requisite Soundtrack 2 :

Any suggestions or questions are appreciated, as I'll be the first to admit that this is quite an ambitious project. I'll try to get up some vague history and a country list as soon as possible.

Anyone who wants a fanservice country for themselves (such as the already existing Hellenic Sichuan, Scythia, or that Hellenized Norwegian country) are more than welcome to do so, as long as it makes sense.

Rough Draft for Scythian NIs for SK's mod:

Traditions:
-.05 yearly war exhuation (identical to the innovation tenant that does the same thing)
+25% land forcelimits

Legend of the Amazon:
+25% manpower

Kurgans:
+1 yearly legitimacy

Noble Horsemen:
+1 leader shock

"Fed from horse-blood"
+20% calvary combat ability

Might Makes Right
-20% Core Creation Costs

Steppe Tolerance:
No penalties to negative religion tolerance

Ritual Cannabis:
-2 revolt risk

Bonus:
+1 yearly prestige

Throwing this here because it is more relevant here than in Argie.

I could help compose soundtrack... Though my capabilities to get it recorded are much less optimistic.

This is definitely interesting.
About the premise: There are some stories that Alexander was planning a western campaign before his death. What if this happened? What if he succeeded? What if he established a Greek hegemony over North Africa and Eastern Europe? What would be the consequences of its inevitable collapse?

The premise that you have is good SK, this is just a possible alternative.

These kinds of things are very helpful, thanks.

I wasn't even thinking about soundtrack, but that would be great!

One of the things that I had in mind is that the Argeans campaign against and conquer Carthage pretty early on (maybe as Alexander's last campaign or something), so this actually has been considered; at its height in the second century BCE the Argean Empire rules from the Pillars of Hercules to the Ganges valley. (They would then end up bleeding themselves dry in a Punic-esque war against the Romans, so there's that)

Ooh Ooh, Holy Argean Empire...

Oh wait maybe that wouldn't work, considering the fact that one of the reasons there was an elective system in the HRE was the fact that German tribes had a sort of elective system set up to elect chieftains.

Alternatively how about the Catholics being centered in say Persepolis, in fact we could have the 5 pentarchal cities in different locations.

My opinion:
Alexandria
Byzantium (Not Constantinople)
Persepolis
Babylon/Baghdad
Jerusalem

I like this.

No Holy Argean Empire, I'm afraid; the HRE mechanics are going to be used for a League-type thing amongst all those Greek states. The alt-Pope is in set up to be in Babylon right now (just because the irony is too good) but Persepolis works just as well, not to mention it's not at the very edge of alt-Catholicism.
I like the pentarchal idea; though:
-Alexandria is controlled by Muslim Egypt, and
-Jerusalem is controlled by Jewish Israel,
although I suppose we could make a very nice bonus, maybe even a union tag, for controlling all five of them.

You know I'm a sucker for cultures, I could to help out with the cultures, culture groups, new cultures, etc. for the mod, I could do a map or some sort of write up when I'm back home and off my ipad.

Well, in EU's start date, all but Constantinople and Rome are held by non-Christians (And since the Pentarchy bonus only fires for Orthodox, essentially only Constantinople counts at all). You could just say in the past, those were the key holy cities of early Christendom, like how OTL Pentarchy actually is.

In EU4, the Pentarchy gives you +20 prestige up front, then an additional yearly .5 prestige and one free missionary. A new tag is a little extreme, but at the same point that would be pretty cool to see. Maybe you can call it the Holy See or something?

Of course, that would be great :)

I like these ideas. A new tag wouldn't be that much effort to add, I don't think, especially if we're only using it for a single decision.

Sub post. I find this idea intriguing and will keep an eye on it.

Spoiler :

Can I semi-hijack this for Soufricamod? :p
I have some ideas for some of the national ideas for ISZ (which will apprear around 1700, but hey, USA has ideas)
Spoiler ISZ :
Traditions:
+30% manpower
+25% forcelimits

People of the Sky:
+25% missionary strength

Assegai:
+1 leader fire

Terror Tactics:
-2 revolt risk

Recruitment Reforms
+50% manpower

Never Yield:
Foreigners have +150% core creation costs

Impondo:
Infantry combat ability +30%

Adaptabiity:
-10% MIL tech cost

Bonus:
+1 free leader

Next up SOT (Sotho), which will get defensive bonuses and tolerance of heathens.
I'm also going to be making Bantu its own culture group and splitting it into:
  • Chewa
  • Zulu
  • Xhosa
  • Tswana
  • Sotho
as well as
  • Making Khoesan culture group for Khoikhoi and San
  • making Malagasy culturegroup with Merina and some others
  • Making Maasai be part of the same culturegroup as Ethiopia or Funj

What are we going to about the Reformation? I assume Catholicism might not be best candidate this time. What do you guys think?

Oh also thing I noticed while doodling around on a copy of provinces.bmp yesterday
You're using an outdated map apparently - some of the provinces in former Swahili don't match up.
As such, the Africa component of the map/Soufricamod might work a bit differently than originally planned, but I'll see how it works when I get home from school

I would definitely be up for helping with the linguistic and cultural end of things, like names or alternate province names, or new colonial cultures and all that.

As for stuff that I'd personally like to see in...

Well, since the Han people are confined to Southern China, maybe have a Sino-Japanese Hata clan extant in western Honshu? Other stuff might be a surviving Emishi and Nakoku, and maybe pseudo Ikko-Ikki republic around Kansai or Shikoku?

I'd also like to have a East Sea Trade Federation similar to Venice or the Hansa spanning from Guangdong to Ryukyu to Luzon, both as a variation of one of my old standbys and as a tribute to Ryukyu WC in the base game.

And maybe a Fulani-run Empire of Takrur, if you would be so kind?

What are we going to about the Reformation? I assume Catholicism might not be best candidate this time. What do you guys think?

Obviously it's going to be a Tai monk nailing the 95 Sutras to the Wat of the Shining Lotus.

Subbed. Thanks for Hellenic China! Will post more later.
