Is it just me or do the barbarians always seem to favor attacking me over the computer civs? It also seems like the other civs won't help me fight them. For example say i am that I am exploring with a scout if I stumble upon two barbs and a CPU swordsman the barbs automatically come at me although the swordsman is attacking them. Am I being paranoid or have other people experienced this?

Thanks

I've watched as barbs do some terrible things to the AI player. Sometimes, especially with raging barbs it can seem like they gang up on you but I think that's mostly just a perception problem and occasional bad luck.

Yeah that's what I was thinking that it just seems like they are focusing on me. Especially when I first start and I am exploring with my scout and my warrior and it seems like a steady stream of baby's that pillage my . It's annoying.

It feels good to let that out hahaha stupid barbs.

Thanks

Every time you clear a barbarian camp and find a "barbarian" worker it is really an AI worker or (more likely) settler which the AI did not bother to guard properly. So the AI definitely gets hit by the hordes. :viking:

In fact, some experienced players have even suggested that the AI is so bad at barbarian defense that turning on "Raging Barbarians" in Advanced Setup counts as a quasi-cheat.

I think (but I'm not sure) that the AI civs have a bonus against barbs - in any case, the barbs will attack what they perceive as the weakest target.

Whilst it's true that you do see captured settlers in barb camps a lot, even more frequent are unescorted settlers that somehow manage to walk through barb-infested lands and found cities far from home. Catherine's and Hiawatha's settlers seem to lead particularly charmed lives!

I've had games like that. Just last night, my archer (an upgrade scout from a ruin), came across an AI warrior fighting with a barb. The warrior attacks it, and instead of fighting back, the barb runs up a hill and attacks my archer.

This also seems to happen a lot when a barb is being bombarded by a city state. The city state will bombard it, and the barb will attack my unit that is near and watching.

The AI, at least on Prince difficulty onwards, has a higher bonus against barbarians than you do. For the player it is 33%, for the AI 66% or something.

So if both you and an AI civ have two otherwise completely identical Swordsmen next to a barbarian unit, that barb will definitely choose to attack you. They can see that your bonus is smaller, just as you can when you hover your mouse over an enemy unit.

Even on Settler, the AI has a somewhat larger bonus against barbs than the human.

Do those bonuses explain how a barb archer can repeatedly shoot an AI warrior 10 turns in a row, and never kills it? I swear, there are times the AI units self-heal every turn when fighting barbs.

I once just watched and watched one of those battles, and finally after a half-an-hour, I moved a unit in and killed the barb, just because it was getting so annoying.

I think the AI needs those bonuses. Whenever I using raging barbarians it seems like the AI expands a lot slower.

If that was a human, he'd be accused of farming the barb for XP. Yes, the AI might really have been healing by 10 hit points each turn instead of attacking the barb, which is actually pretty close to what a barb archer on average inflicts to an AI warrior.

AI indeed sucks fighting babs compared to the human. And that's been the case since Civ I. (Even Civ IV gave the AI a bigger combat bonus over the barbs that it does the human)

I'm thinking playing as Germany with raging barbs on could be pretty cool. Big army, fast.

I'll have to try that sometime.

Actually, that SLOWS DOWN Germany's benefit. Raging barbs does NOT increase the number of barb camps nor its generation. It instead greatly increases the barb unit spawn rate of existing camps.

It's actually the Ottomans who benefit from raging barbs. (And that's also the standard tactic for someone trying to get England's naval achievement in a single game)
