This Dutch frigate design has strong ASW and anti-surface capabilities. Two ships of this class were built for the Greek navy in 1981. Several more ex-Dutch navy vessels were purchased later. The West German Bremen class frigate is a related design (differs in propulsion and equipment).

I copy pasted the rear mast of the Kortenaer from Fairline's Type42 DD, it is identical.

Thanks, Tech.
Just personal preference, I had already switched to darker colours for the larger/ newer ships so now they match.

So, here comes the Blohm + Voss MEKO 200 Frigate.

Developed from the Potuguese João Coutinho-class corvette, German designed modular MEKOs are some of the worlds most modern and capable frigates. On the left, pre-VLS Turkish Yavuz, Barbaros and Portuguese Vasco da Gama classes. Next, the VLS armed Greek Hydra, Turkish Salih Reis, Australian and Newzealander pre-modification Anzac classes. Last, the modified Australian Anzac class.

I will expand the MEKO series with more Nigerian, Argentine, German, South African, Malaysian, Algerian and Israeli ships.

The heavily armed Nigerian Aradu and Argentine Almirante Brown MEKO 360 classes that directly preceeded the MEKO 200s above. The Argentine MEKO 360s were delivered shortly after the Falklands war. Maybe they could have been a game changer.

Modern Corvettes:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/João_Coutinho-class_corvette Portugual
Designed in Portugal and originally built in West Germany by B+V as an outsourcing, intended for Portugal's overseas wars, these are the starting point of the MEKO family and the other four corvette/ small frigate classes here. They were used for patrol and fire-support missions in Angola, Mozambique, Guinea and Cape Verde.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baptista_de_Andrade-class_corvette Portugual
Development of the above, originally built for South Africa.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D'Estienne_d'Orves-class_aviso France, Argentina and Turkey
At the end of the Cold War this class was the most modern French small frigate design. They have great range (5000 nautical miles, not repesented in CivII). However, the ships of this class are not truly oriented towards battle group operations due to their slow speed (24 knots) and weaknesses in armament.
Only a handful of the frigates of this class carry Exocet SSM's and none
have helicopters.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descubierta-class_corvette Spain, Egypt and Morocco
These are small patrol frigates. The Spanish Navy gradually acquired US Navy Harpoons for this class. Moroccan ships are armed with Exocet SSM's instead of Harpoons. Egyptian ships are identical to the Spanish ones.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MEKO_140 Argentina
These six anti-surface warfare/patrol operations corvettes were built in lieu of the last two of the MEKO360 heavy frigates and took from 1985 to 2004 to deliver. Built in Argentina, the Argentine Navy struggles to meet maintenance and training requirements for them because of financial problems and import restrictions.

Roussen class later

First, as promised, the Dutch (now Chilean) Jacob van Heemskerck AA Frigate:

Conceived as air defence frigates, their primary anti-aircraft equipment, except the Sea Sparrow launcher,is a single-arm Tartar launcher for Standard SM-1MR surface-to-air missiles. The launcher replaced the helicopter hangar and deck of the Kortenaer class frigates. The SM-1MR has a range of approximately 45km and also an important secondary capability against naval targets.

Roussen-class (Super Vita) fast attack craft of the Greek navy.Their main armament is 8 MM40 block III Exocet SSMs that can reach out to 180km. Similar but smaller Vosper Thornycroft (now BAE systems) Vita craft serve the navies of Qatar (Barzan class), Oman (Province class) and Kenya (Nyanyo class).

Lupo-class frigate of the Italian, Venezuelan and Peruvian navies:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lupo-class_frigate
and the Soldati subclass, built for Saddam but interned during the Iran-Iraq war and seized by the Italian navy after the 1st Gulf war.
These frigates are almost identical to the Maestrale class, sacrificing a single helicopter for increased SSM ammunition and greater speed (35 knots).
Almost without question, they are on a par with, if not superior to, US frigates of comparable size. Certainly, they are superior to Soviet, French and British frigates of the Cold war. The Lupo's are armed with the superb Otomat II SSM, a weapon with greater range than the US Harpoons. Most importantly, these frigates are fast - at 35 knots, they are seven or eight knots faster than US frigates of the time.

The Soldati class ships have a telescoping hangar. Maestrale next.

Armed with 40 Standard SM-I MR SAM's, after the 1988 refit, the Audace class pair were primarily air defense warships. However, with the capability to deploy the superb Sea King ASW helicopter, she was also a very fine ASW ship. It should be noted here that the Italian Navy is armed with superlative guns for shore bombardment, anti-surface, and anti-aircraft purposes. Audace had two five-inch rapid-fire guns and four automatic 76mm guns, each capable of one full minute of sustained anti-aircraft fire without reloading.

The Impavido pair of destroyers the Audaces were an impovement on, were comparable to the US Coontz destroyers in their ASW and long-range anti-aircraft capabilities However, they were not armed with SSM's. I will also do an all gun version later.

This tiny hydrofoil was a potent ship, armed with a rapid- fire 76mm gun and two long-range Otomat II SSM's. It was capable of 50 knots  in normal sea states. Again, this class is an example of the Italian Navy's innovative,low-cost, and effective warship designs.

It was also adopted by the Japanese navy as the 1-Go class who originaly planned to build a dozen Harpoon and M61 Vulcan gatling armed ones. The last of the three they actually built was decomissioned in 2010

Despite its age, this was a superb ship, in some ways superior to US Navy cruisers of comparable size in that era. Veneto was armed with a long-range SSM (Otomat 11), up to nine helicopters, long-range ASW weapons, and the US Standard SM-I ER SAM. It was also capable of speeds over 30 knots. In many ways, Veneto is a microcosm of the Italian Navy - a vastly underrated force, possessing excellent warships of varied capabilities which are, ship for ship, comparable to the very best of the US Navy. The only possible shortcomings in the Italian Navy are poor leadership and crew inexperience. Nevertheless, Italy would be a most helpful ally to the US Navy in any conflict in the Mediterranean.

The former flagship of the Italian navy:

Garibaldi is similar to the Royal Navy's Invincible class, although it did not initially possess any VSTOL aircraft for use onboard. Garibaldi is a potent threat due to as
Otomat II SSM armament, although its primary mission is ASW.

The F70 is internationally labelled an "anti-submarine destroyer", though the French refer to the ships as "frigates"*.

This is the most effective French destroyer design of the Cold war. The ships of this class are primarily oriented towards ASW (they are one of only a few French surface designs with a helicopter hangar) and anti-surface warfare (they possess an updated version of the original Exocet SSM). Still in service.

Again, this is a destroyer in size and capabilities, not a mere frigate.

These were very large destroyers similar in concept to those of the Leygues class. They had a double hangar for two Lynx helicopters. Optimized for anti-submarine warfare, they were similar in many regards to the unmodified Spruance-class destroyers. They left service by 2013, having spent most of it in the Atlantic.
