Welcome to the TSG120 After Actions Report. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state victory date and score (preferably in the post title), as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory!

STOP - Please do not continue reading this thread until you have completed and submitted your game.

Please use the Civ5 game submission page to submit your final, first play through, .Civ5Save file, saved AFTER the victory ceremony if you were not conquered (using the "Lemme play one more turn" feature.).

- Did you find their UA/UUs to be useful in your domination plan?
- Describe the order you took the capitals in and any significant hindrances or delays to that order.
- Did you enjoy a later era Domination game? Did you learn any new strategies or tactics based on the era?

Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences (please state if the game is a replay). Please refrain from posting videos until the deadline for submission is over.

Not really. Janissaries are not that good at all and there were too few mounted units in the game (except a few lancers) to make a good use of sipahi. Nontheless, I used both of them + artilleries.

Started turn 89
99 - Stockholm
110 - Moscow
114 - Washington
117 - Adis Abeba
119 - Copenhagen (from water)
132 - Gao
133 - Marrakech

Being a lousy warmonger I rarely finish the game sooner even with ancient era start. So no :) But should've really start with cannons and upgrade them on the road. Would have shorten the game significantly.

Nice fast game, I really enjoyed it. No problems at all, just America had two riflemans - nothing against my artilllery.

I used Sipachi only - they were very useful for final conquest of cities.

Stocholm
Moscow
Marrakesh
Washington (2. army)
Adis Abbeba (2. army)
Gao
Copenhagen

I liked the game - is a different from normal start and very fast.

Used Janissary early since they are good for soaking city attacks while I have to use cannons. Later upgraded some Sipahi but not very useful due to lack of mounted units, mainly used for pillage gold. Only 1 coastal capital, so my navy has only 2 frigates, and no melee ship so not much use for UA.

- Describe the order you took the capitals in and any significant hindrances or delays to that order.
Terrain combined with lack of roads delayed conquest by quite a bit. Some of the AI don't even have roads between their own cities. First 2 capitals were taken with Cannons, rest with Artillery.
(1) = 1st army, (2) = 2nd army, (1a), (1b) = divisions of 1st army
70 Stockholm (1)
82 Moscow (1)
94 Marrakech (1)
102 Washington (2)
103 Copenhagen (1b)
105 Addis Ababa (2)
107 Gao (1a)

I felt it was very easy and fast. I was also very surprised that my tech rate was so high that I was able to tech to modern era via flight to get ideology. I missed having good warmonger wonders such as Pyramids or Statue of Zeus.

i settled in place and started building a workshop then iron works.. after they were built i settled on the coast near the gold.. 10 turns later i had a national college then a university..

i started with liberty production and worker and opened honor.. soon after i got a general then the extra XP..

i started soon after getting gunpowder by moving 4 janissaries and 3 sipahis to washington and took that pretty easily.. i built some cannons and sent them to help take out ethiopia then upgraded them to artillery.. while all that was going on i was building a road from capital to stockholm with 3 workers.. then i moved 4 artillery, 3 janissaries and 2 sipahi's down the road to kill off my best friend from sweden.. moved thru sweden to thrash russia.. while that was happening i was finished with mongolia and moving towards gao... meanwhile i had 4 frigates and 2 caravels heading to denmark.. denmark was the last to fall one turn after songhai.

finished turn 265 which is 80 turns of playing.

i liked the UUs.. the horse has great vision and can pillage without costing a turn.. the janissaries didnt get much action after washington.. i like the later era starts.. there's so many more directions for strategy right out of the gate.

Went Liberty built third city on lake. Civ should treat lakes like lakes not oceans, built a Trieme in the lake that was useless. City was a big loss because no cargo ships internal. Got some crossbowman out and took washington. Sent second group south and took Sweden,Russia. A third group sailed around world and took Denmark. This was like shooting Ducks in a barrel no resistance to any military throughout game. Never did get artillery but knew I wouldn't need them.

UA was useless. I did make use of Janissaries, which keep their heal-when-kill ability when upgraded, so that was nice.

Conquest order: Sweden -> Russia -> Songhai -> Vikings -> Marrakesh -> Ethiopia -> Washington. Given the placement of the City-states, I'll bet most players took a similar path. No one presented too much difficulty.

Coal seemed a bit scarce.

Since the early game is my favorite part (and I find the endgame always starts to get a bit tedious) I have to (respectfully) vote 'nay' on the later-era start. I am an admittedly cautious warmonger (and prefer to build infrastructure and wonders 1st), but I feel like maybe I could have gotten an earlier victory if I could have started my campaigns earlier?

Either way, thanks for an enjoyable game..... I think I'll go try one of my new 'Explorer Maps' now..... :)

Mine took 195 turns. :( I'm not going to submit it because it was a replay (I didn't finish the first game because even tho' I was winning it was getting tedious -- I waited too long to start warring)

I went right side of Honor, opened Commerce, then finished Honor, finished Commerce, and in no particular order Autocracy 6, Rationalism+Secularism, and the Exploration opener. I started my rampage as soon as I got the GG. I'm sure a mix of Liberty and Honor for the open would have been faster. But this was faster than my Tradition attempt.

Sweden (total annihilation) -> Russia -> Marrakesh -> Ethiopia -> Washington (annihilation) -> Songhai -> Copenhagen. Many turns were wasted marching from Marrakesh to Addis Ababa thru that chokepoint and then back again. I took Marrakesh when I did because it had Notre Dame and I needed the happiness. But by the end of the game I had so much gold and so much happiness it was ridiculous.

Only Russia (Red Fort) and Ethiopia (lots of Mehal Sefari plus their UA) put up a decent fight.

The Sipahi make good spotters for artillery, and are good for mopping up almost-dead enemy units before they might get a chance to heal instantly. The heal-on-kill ability of the Janissaries was useful, especially when they are upgraded to riflemen and beyond) but I think I like Minutemen better.

I kept a commanding tech lead the entire game even without any research labs or academies, only a couple of public schools, and taking Rationalism late. I did have universities all around and several observatories. I used Oxford to bulb dynamite.

I need more practice playing domination.

I screwed up early on by getting into builder mode instead of warmonger mode.

I ended up using 2 arty and several Janissaries to take Ethiopia. Then started upgrading them to Infantry before moving on to Washington and the others.

I pushed my tech to X-Coms and finished off the last two civs with them.

Hopefully I can at least hit top score this time.

Thanks for sticking it out. Even though this was a later era start, they wont all be Domination in the future so builders can also enjoy them, hopefully.

And honestly, the sad part is that most of the value in the Map Packs are just so you can play some saves. I'm sorry you had to buy it but at least some other saves located in the forums (not just GotMs) could now be playable too. I hope to not make that DLC mistake again.

Argh yes please don't, I was looking forward to trying the later start. Looking forward to TSG121, I am too broke to buy map packs so this one gets a pass from me. I was all ready to send Cannons and Janissary's after everyone.

If I want to play another game just like this one (but not the same one) to see if I can do better, what were the settings?

Looks like standard-sized pangaea map, Denmark and BNW DLC, and default game options. You didn't tweak the starting units did you?

Thank you. I know it was a stupid question but I'm new to this. :)
No question is a stupid question. Nothing around here is blatantly obvious. :)

I started a new game with the same settings. (although there were no goody huts; I'm pretty sure I didn't disable them) Opened Liberty and Honor and took the free worker from Liberty, and then filled Honor (left side first.) Now I'm going to fill Commerce. This game is going much faster then when I opened with Tradition or Honor. I only settled two cities; I'm conquering the rest. I'm delaying researching Rifling a bit while I spam janissaries.

I didn't know you couldn't found a religion once you enter the Industrial Era. :( But the God-King pantheon was very good while it lasted.

[This is probably off-topic for this thread, so I'll stop now.]

Did you find their UA/UUs to be useful in your domination plan?
My UUs were okay without blowing my mind. The issue is that in Civ ranged units are all powerful and all my UUs just had to escort the
artillery. The UA was completely useless.

Describe the order you took the capitals
Only distance was an issue.

Did you enjoy a later era Domination game? Did you learn any new strategies or tactics based on the era?
I did enjoy starting on a later era as it was a change from usual. The AI did not cope well with it at this difficulty level.

I would have loved not to have had to choose between the mountain and getting access to both oceans...

To get as much lush land as possible in my capital I didn't settle in the first turn. I went liberty with my first four choices to get a worker and settler. I settled next to the inland sea to get cargo ships up and running and to chop extra workers and buildings.

I kept an eye on Russia as she had a nice start and started to pump out wonders. I built up my national wonders and for once didn't over expand. I popped a number of Great Scientists and Writers to get techs and more civics and once I had artillery I went hunting the AI Civilizations (I had already gone after barbarians to get the City States to like me). My order of conquest was Sweden, Russia, America, Ethiopia, Morocco, Denmark and finally Songhai. This was helped as Russia had loads of wonders to keep me happy and as I went Order as soon as I teched into Modern.

It didn't take too long to succeed although there was definitely inefficiency in my approach - it is quite late here and I wasn't thinking too hard about things. You'll notice some of my land was pillaged...had a little dose of unhappiness when I quickly took over a few cities.

I fully expect some people to complete this in around 80 turns...perhaps sooner!
