SGOTM 15 - One Short Straw

Sheesh... This is one spaceship that just cannot get off the launchpad...

How many times are we going to have to re-test everything?

Well, this puts the Oracle in doubt at any date, but we might as well still go for it, since it's only a matter of researching Priesthood. A quick glance at the save gives me the hunch we can get the library in Delhi in 1t instead of 2t, thus speeding up Math 1t, so that we could get the Oracle on 1480/1440BC. As a backup plan, we'll have to be prepared to rush libraries in Gold-E Locks and Gems City so that we can still rapidly get COnstruction. We'll get 78 failed gold, which is quite nice. Maybe we should go for some failed gold from the GW in Zlatorog as well.

EDIT: ZPV are you going to update the Test Save?

OK, so this is a setback, but it's not the end of the world. Now that we can no longer build SH in Zlatorog, we can get that 5th worker you guys have been asking for. :D

We need to put this extra worker and 78 early failed gold to work for us. Things we might be able to do:

1. Get the library in Delhi 1 or 2 turns earlier (we should get Writing a turn earlier at least).
2. Liberate the lost hammers (8?) under Gems City.
3. Get the bacon in Gems City on T+2 rather than T+3.
4. Quarry the marble in 2 turns with 3 workers instead of 3 turns with 2 workers.
5. Chop a quick WB in Gems City for either earlier scouting or fishing nets in Marble City.
6. Complete the Oracle a turn or two earlier.

@ZPV Are you done or do you want to play a few more turns since your turnset got cut short?

I'm done for now. Getting the library, GS and stuff we'll need for the Oracle should be someone else's baby.
Just played: ZPV
Up now: Beestar
On deck: magnusmarcus

Getting the Oracle a turn sooner's going to be challenging. It might be there, but not easy. So far, getting the library in 1 turn requires 4 chops, as far as I can tell, avoiding an early poprush in Delhi that is. And I see no way to get writing a turn earlier.

@LC

You're right. While we can run 100% research right away, we can't get Writing any sooner. I was, however, able to chop the forest on the turn Gems City was founded with three workers, getting 8 "free" hammers in Delhi. From there, two of the workers can climb the hill and start pasturing on the same turn as they would have had they just climbed the hill after chopping the forest at Gems City-NE, thus not wasting any workers turns. We can also quarry the marble a turn sooner using all three workers. This gives us a very small 100% bonus in Gold-E Locks on the 4 hammers/turn it gets. Doing this prevents us from having to stop working the sheep for max hammers to ensure that the Oracle is completed after T64.

Has anyone else thought of what to do besides build a worker with the production and two chops we have in Zlatorog? If we go for a worker, is there anything else this worker could be doing besides getting Gems City set up and the marble quarried a tad sooner?

Since Beestar has been MIA for the last several days, do we give him 24 hours to post a "Got it" message and then move on to magnusmarcus if we don't hear from him?

One thing that we will want to think about is whether it will be worth it to whip or Chop a Monument in any of our Cities.

One consideration is that we seem to be settling most of our Cities to get the good Resources within the initial 1-square radius, which reduces the need for Cultural Border expansion.

Another consideration is that Forest Chops made outside of Cultural Borders give you a reduced amount of Hammers, so getting the Cultural Border expansion could net us extra Hammers.

Then there is the +20% Defensive bonus in a City from a Cultural Border expansion should we need to defend from a Barb attacking a City.

There's also the fact that Cultural Borders will help to fog-bust.

We PROBABLY won't want Libraries instead of Monuments now due to their high Hammer cost (in Cities that weren't going to build a Library as per our plan), but we might consider getting Libraries instead at a later date, while hoping for Hinduism to automatically spread in the meantime.

That said, each non-capital City out of our first three Cities does have a Gem or Gold Mine, which makes a Library pay off in the long run... yet... probably not in the short run when we're needing our whips and Chops to go toward building an army.

I guess we just want to hope to get lucky with automatic spreading of Hinduism! ;)

Hey guys,

My laptop's hard drive died yesterday, and I no longer have my Civ4 discs. Combined with the stress of a new job in a new city, I think I should probably admit that I won't be able to contribute much to this SGOTM. I hate feeling like I'm letting down the team, but it's probably better if I clearly establish my non-availability, rather than try to stay in it.

I hope it's all right if I continue to contribute as a super-lurker ...

What I'm trying to say is, good luck magnus :D

Thanks for letting us now without delay, beestar. Good luck with your new job and don't stress it!

Oh, and let us konw the results of the autospy, especially if it involves foul play... ;)

To help magnusmarcus out for his turnset, is our high-level plan roughly the same (i.e. bulb Math with GS from Delhi and build the Oracle in Gold-E Locks with marble)? Are we going to build a fifth worker in Zlatorog now that we can no longer build SH there?

Sorry to hear it. Whatever participation level you are able to provide, we will appreciate it! :)

I, meanwhile, I have a laptop computer that I borrowed which can (slowly) run Civ 4, so I am at least capable of playing again. Perhaps we should slot me in again after magnusmarcus.

I do think that it is time for magnusmarcus to step up to the plate and I am confident that he will put in a solid effort, which will be more than satisfactory for me, no matter what the outcome.

@magnusmarcus: Do your best to make it a fun exercise and treat it as a learning opportunity and I'm certain that we will all be in support of you! :)

As a suggestion to you, magnusmarcus, the best thing that he can do that you are the active player is to post messages frequently. Feel free to ask questions. Feel free to tell us what you need help testing (or figuring out via the code or via spreadsheets), so that we can help out. Feel free to say that you are stuck. Feel free to post even a tentative plan. Just remember that we're here you help you! :)

I still like the idea of building The Oracle in Gold-E Locks. We really could use the extra Culture there, particularly since we won't be getting a free Monument there, now that we won't be the ones to complete Stonehenge.

I also believe that it has been proven several times now that using a Great Scientist to Lightbulb Math can give your empire a great kick-start, particularly when you need to research a lot of techs. In our case, we want a lot of techs (we want Granaries, we want Catapults, we needed Hinduism, we needed Masonry, we want Fishing... we pretty much want it all, and Lightbulbing a tech like Math helps out a lot in that regard).

If I recall correctly, we're playing the game on normal speed, which means that the first Great Person (such as a Great Scientist) requires 100 GPP (Great People Points). Since we are Philosophical, one Scientist Specialist produces twice as many GPP per turn, i.e. 2 times 3 GPP = 6 GPP per turn. 100 / 6 = 16.67, which rounds up to 17, since we can't hire two thirds of a Scientist. Since that number is an odd number, there is one turn where we could hire just a single Scientist Specialist, then 16 / 2 = 8 turns where we would want to hire two Scientist Specialists, getting us a Great Scientist 1 + 8 = 9 turns later. Of course, since it is easy to forget to hire the second Scientist, my suggestion would be to just hire 2 Scientists right away, to avoid forgetting, and then if we end up with a bit of excess GPP (1 Scientist Specialist's worth of excess GPP) at the end of generating hte Great Scientist, it won't be a big deal, as we'll still get our Great Scientist when we wanted it.

We will want to make sure that we have time to actually press the "Lightbulb" icon on the Great Scientist before we end the turn where we build The Oracle, since we can't Lightbulb Math after completing The Oracle if we are going to get Construction out of the deal.

All of that said, if anyone presents a complete plan that improves upon things, I believe that this team is open-minded enough to consider any such suggestion. So, no, the plan isn't locked in stone, but it is a plan that has been worked on dilligently by many of you and seems to make sense given our goals, so it is probably what we will end up doing unless, like I said, someone presents an even more compelling plan.

As for another tricky thing--we'll want to keep a close eye on what the Barbs are up to. For example, ZPV mentioned that there is the possibility of Barbs in the south--is that possibility still on the table or have we been able to conclusively determine that there is no possibility of wandering Barbs to our south? If there is still the chance of Barb units down there, we might want to make sure that our southern Warriors are not Fortified, so that we the active player will remember to visually look around the area of each of these units to see if a Barb unit appeared after ending a turn.

It may help you, magnusmarcus, to rewrite LowtherCastle's comments and put them in a format that you will find easy to work through, so as to ensure that you will remember to cover all of the required actions for each turn. I find that it's often easier to write up a plan in a format that works best for me. Each person has their own techniques; personally, I like to build redundancies into my plan, so when I mention a square that a Worker needs to move to, I will mention both the type of square, such as GH for Grassland Hills, as well as the direction, such as NW (for north-west), so that if I make a typo and write "NE" or else forget the difference between east and west when executing the plan, I will have a greater chance of noticing my error.

Here's an example of part of one of my Pre-Play Plans from the last SGOTM:

Warrior 3 (NE spawn-buster): from here on in, we will spawn-bust for some turns then slowly advance to the north... we'll move NW GFor when we do move, since that square looks to be the safest move, always Skipping this unit's turn

Turn 57/500 (1720 BC)

(Pigs City auto-works the Pig for growth 1 in turn)

Worker 2: Chop the PFor SE + S of Washington

Everyone will have their own style. Everyone needs to find a way to lay out the information that works best for them. When you are the active player, it's important that the information is laid out in a manner that works well for you, not for the rest of the team, since you will be the one clicking the buttons and pushing our units around the map.

Okay, magnus, time to come out of your hole... :) As I understand it, this is your first turnset ever. Here's a quick 1-2-3.

1. First thing you do is download the Real Save from the Progress and Results page. Obviously, you only take the OSS save (2080BC).

2. Then you open the save (just a formality), and post a "Got it." here. That demarcates the beginning of your turnset.

3. Then you study the save or the TestSave if you prefer and put together a Pre-Play-Plan, which is a name coined by Erkon, the Captain of Murky Waters. He created a Pre-Play-Plan template, which you could use, if you choose, as a guide to help you remember the various things you might include in the plan.

4. After you post your PPP, we all study it and make our suggestions. YOu make any changes, we study and comment on that. Then you play. (We can help with that too, if you want.)

5. When you're done playing, even if you decide to interrupt your play, you then upload the save back to the server.

Then basic idea of the PPP is to make sure you're fully invested in the plan and to give others a chance to comment before you play. Using this procedure, I don't see how you can fail to play an excellent turnset, perhaps the best ever! As Erkon used to say (not to make you nervous...): "Remember, your turnset is the most important yet..."

.

And when it does come time to play, don't be too afraid of making mistakes. We've all done it. Repeatedly. I can point you to a couple I made in my turnset, if it helps.

Just if you realize you have made one, then stop and cool down for an hour or two - that's far better than making several in a row in a rush of blood.

To help magnusmarcus out for his turnset, is our high-level plan roughly the same (i.e. bulb Math with GS from Delhi and build the Oracle in Gold-E Locks with marble)? Are we going to build a fifth worker in Zlatorog now that we can no longer build SH there?
I see two basic possibilities for the Oracle:

T63 The Oracle in 1t (still not sure it's possible)
T64 The Oracle in 1t

What's new from our earlier testing is that the current Zlatorog worker now has 5 turns available that were chopping Stonehenge before. If we're content with T64-Oracle-1t, then those worker turns can be used to:

1. chop a worker in Zlatorog
2. something else.

As Dhoom mentioned, we now have to worry about border expansion, especially for Gold-E Locks (wheat+chops) and Gems City (chops). To me, that means libraries, because

1. We aren't expecting any tech trades
2. Both cities are commerce-producing
3. Gold-E Locks is too far to rely on Hinduism spread.

So one solution might be to plan the turnset so that those two cities chop granary>library or library>granary asap after we bulb math. Whipping could also supply part of the hammers for those builds.

I will be climbing out of my hole when I get out of work tonight and begin testing an altered plan comparable to what has been tested earlier (- Stonehenge, +1 worker)

How many turns before we need to worry about having some kind of defense for zlatarog?

How many turns before we need to worry about having some kind of defense for zlatarog?
Good question. We're still at 22 cities worldwide, which equates to 2 cities per AI plus 1. At 30 cities barbs will attack, so that could be in 5-10t. We should monitor it every few turns. Gems City will add to the number too, of course.

If we put 1 chop into another Zlatorog worker, it's done in 10t. We two chops, it's done in 5t.
