CIV Illustrated #3: City specialization explained!

Wouldn't spending a GE on WP in the HE city be a strong play, especially for a non-IND, no-stone situation? This is especially the case post-Assembly Line when a GPP farm can run more engineers and WP synergizes with Pentagon particularly well for land units (3 barracks + 4 WP + 2 Pentagon + 2 GG/Theo = 11 xp for 3 promotions out of the gate). Another settled GG or Vassalage and Boudica can build Commando Inf. :crazyeye:

In fact, Boudica can build Commando Grens if she gets two GG's and a GE early and has a religion. They can then supplement 3-promotion Cuirs built in other cities. Did I also mention the Commando Grens get Guerilla I from the Dun as well?

GE for WP would be ok probably. It's definitely better than slow-building it, and +4 XP from the HE-city can allow for great tactics like Commando which you already mentioned. Nothing better than Nukes and Commando units.

In HoF we aim for 4-5 Golden Ages, and the Hit-Wonders or the Christo Redentor, which are really good wonders, can all be rushed by a single GE. Even if the GE isn't enough to rush a full wonder, like with the SoL, it's still good to cut the build-time in half and get the bonus-specialists earlier.
GE-rushing the Wallstreet I can understand in a game with Corps, but the Globe is way too cheap and far to easily built via OF-whips.

If you can whip this, so the problem is solved. We talked about variants, when you need GT asap. This variant could be rare, but if you keep it mind, your have an additional option.

I don't inisist on spending two GP for it. But under some circumstances, this could if not the best, but still very interesting decision.

In my last game, I found, that my opponent(Khan) settled 3GG in his city. This city could be a good place for GT, if you already built HE

From a purely theoretical point of view, many decisions are interesting, but be honest, would you really spend a GA + a GE in early game for getting the Globe as soon as possible, as you suggest? If so, from where do you take the GA and the GE and on what do you have to pass because of that? To me, as early as possible means directly after Drama, and the only option to get a GA + a GE at that time would be to beeline Music and chop-whip a Forge and go for a GE as the 1st GP, but that would also mean not having Civil Service + an Academy, or not having bulbed XBows or even Trebs, or it would mean not saving 3T for switching to war-civics via a Golden Age and rush the Taj Mahal to get another GA on top.

I thought not about early game, but possibly middle. Mostly, Renessainse. So, it could be GA you keep from Music (because the only useful spending of it is GAge, and you could already activate GAge before), and possibly 3rd-5th GP, that is GE occasionaly and you have no wonders you want to build (this is often in Renessainse, so I can keep it for future Corp, or bulb 1/3-1/4 of a tech. Not mega-super-variants for using this GE also)

First GE definitely I would spend on Mids or smth like that.

So, this is not a tactic, more like illustration.

The key again is, to pre-produce useful buildings up to the point of max-OF before Universities and Oxford become available...

One note about the Oxford whip again for other players who want to try it: Be careful to choose a Forge as one of those buildings. While it's a useful building of course it might mess up the whipping cascade if you preproduce buildings up to max overflow without taking into account that max overflow changes once the Forge is produced. The prepared 2-pop-whip with max overflow of the buildings you want to whip after the Forge might turn into a 1-pop-whip with really poor overflow. Of course that happened to me and pretty much destroyed the plan of a quick Oxford build.

That's a fair point, but you should have built the forge long before university and Oxford anyway - it's too important to postpone that long IMO.

Greatly helps to have a forest or two as well, but that's not always possible ofc, it depends on previous needs.

That's true, but on the lower levels it means that you need to research Metal Casting yourself because you are way behind Education before the AI offers MC for trading. Self-research is probably indeed the better choice in that case, but you play and play and hope and hope "next turn they will have MC..." and suddenly you notice that you've built and whipped all universities without Forges.

"we (as you can see) ran a Golden Age chain from this moment 'til the end of the game"

-> Could you clarify this concept? How do you run a GA chain until the end of the game? Burning GPs? Is there an article about the mechanics of the GA?

You should know Seraile launches spaceship max 48 turns after Eductaion, so it is 1 GA from Taj Mahal + 3 from Great People. We, mortals, however cannot chain it till the end of a game, but still long enough to take a decisive lead

Launching a spaceship 48 turns after Education (or less?) sounds crazy. Is there a video in which we can see this??

Thx STW :) .

I btw. wanted to mention, that even if the screens aren't showing, they are still there, if you click on the X. This happened when CFC needed to move servers, for some reason, certain screens didn't show up afterwards anymore, even though their links are correct.

Everything still shows nicely on my end! :goodjob:

Interesting, which browser are you using, and did you check the pictures in the spoiler-tags?

Anyhow, the pictures weren't showing for some other users aswell and I had time, so I re-added them with the new, updated links from Photobucket and they work flawlessly again now. Idk what the problem is, it's not Photobucket, because the pictures from Pangaea and Doshin also don't show for me. Maybe something simply went wrong with this thread when the forum migrated towards its new server. This is only to write, that I ofc. could only correct my pictures, and if the mentioned two users would correct their pictures, it'd be good aswell. :)
