This thread will discuss design issues of the Thay civilization

Spoiler History :
The Kingdom of Thay appeared relatively late in Age of Stone. Its founder, King Ononder, united a number of independent principalities in central Dragonia to oppose the growing influence of Furn to the south and the depredations of the orcish savages from the north. The mining and commerce of metal, especially copper and iron, led to an enrichment of the Thayans and to the expansion of their influence in Dragonia. Ononder' efforts were successful but eventually Thay fell victim to orcish invasions.

This all changed when Warnin came to power in 518 AR. In a stunning act of intrigue and treachery, Warnin engineered the assassination of virtually all of the Thayan leaders and kings, sending Thay's new masters into chaos and disarray. Once his power had been thus consolidated, Warnin was able to reorganize the army into groups of specialists (rather than the dominant tradition of having each warrior practice with all weapons). He then aimed at getting rid of Thay once and for all. This was within Warnin's lifetime, as King Soropon of Furn was not ready to defend his cities. Before King Warnin was able to consolidate his control of Thay, he was forced to withdraw, and the remainder of the Furnish Legions moved in to recapture the Furn capitol.

In 527 AR, a Paladornian battalion attacked a group of Nerullic clerics from Thay. Thus began the intermittent Conflict of Faith. This war continued unit 766 AR, but nither side gained or lost much ground.

In 788 AR, Thay found itself with war against Furn again, as Furn launched an attack against the city of Narud. Thus began the decline of the Thayan kingdom, as Furn progressivly defeated each Thayan city until only the capitol, Ketyil, was left.

In 987 AR, armies of Thay marched to the mountains of the Mithrilcraft Dwarves with the goal of taking the mithril ore for themselves. It was discovered at this time however, that a civiliztion that bases its economy on trade of mithril is also capable of basing many of its military advances on mithril as well. When encountering mithril-armored Dwarves, the armies of Thay broke like the waters of the surf against rocks of the shore.

Thay is obviously a very arcane civ. They also seem to like Nerulliicsm. So, they should have something similar to the Elven and Dwarven civs where they have a Folklore that gives them a direct path to the Death Worship tech. They should have a UU mage too, something that relies heavily on necromancy or just plain arcane magic. I like how their cities look now. I might have more ideas later. I hope you guys don't feel like I'm a jerk cuz I'm just coming up with ideas. I'd help program but I have no idea how to do that at all. Sorry.

True. Thanks for liking my ideas.

I just recently thought of this. As was pointed out in a post in "Unit Graphics Needed", Thay is ruled over by eight Zulkirs, one for each school of magic. Therefore, as suggested for the Drow with the Houses thing, maybe you could implement something similar with Thay but with the Zulkirs. Like a unit could come from one of the academies of magic, which could be built as national wonders in Thayvian cities (with one in a city allowed), and be only allowed to use the school of magic from that city (which some might view as a downside). The upside would be that they would be very powerful in that school of magic, having spells that they would not normally have upon being built.

I don't know, another idea. Figured it would help balance the Houses of Drow concept for Thay. Prolly try to come up with ideas for other civs if you wish. Ya know do some research for it. Do you want me to do some brainstorming and research for that?

Fair nough. But just figured if you were going to have a House thing for the Drow, it'd make sense to have something for other civs to balance it out a lil.

Knowing how the Thay from Faerun work ( I don't suppose that there is a relation between the names?), I think Magocracy would be the best choice.

Thay is from Faerun. Cuz a lot of stuff, specifically Thay here, is from the Forgotten Realms stuff, in which the world is called Faerun.

Dragonin Thay is only loosly based on Faerun Thay. Here are some differences:
  • Dragonia Thayan leaders are neutral and not evil. In fact, the head leader of Faerun Thay is an evil lich.
  • Different leaders
  • Different city names
  • Different flag/symbol
  • The Dragonian Thayan leaders are not bald and tattooed.
  • Dragonian Thay's history is not based on Faerun Thay's history

Ok. That gives it a lil uniqueness that will make the gameplay more interesting.

o.O That matters what era you are talking about concerning the Faerun Thay. But regardless, I think that even without tatoos, it would be fitting for them to be Magocracy...

Either that or a plutocracy, (aka Rule by Wealth). It'd make sense (going of Faerunian lore since I don't have all of the Dragonia lore), since Thayian politics are always filled with backstabing, under the table deals, investment, and schemes.

Yes, but based off of the Dragonia lore (look in the civpedia entry for Thay), Magocracy works best for them.

Well... It stinks that the computer with the interwebz isn't the computer with the Civ IV... Maybe there should be a Dragonia wiki?

Well, idea for ya then. YOU make it. The modders of D2 (of which I am not one but certainly understand how busy they must be with this and other things) probably don't have the time for it.

I have slowly been working on an online civilopedia at the diabolicstudios web site...but I can only work so fast. Plus, there are more important things to be finished (like the mod). If you guys want to make a seperate wiki for it...be my guest.

Wooah... I wasn't demanding it or telling anyone else to do anything...

If you don't mind, I wouldn't mind doing so. I don't know much about Wiki-scripting, but I am sure there are tutorials out there somewhere (Maybe even a Wiki on Wiki-making!!!).

Cool. That sounds good, man.
