Malakim Bug?

I'm playing the latest Ashes of Erebus version, and I think I've found a bug with the Malakim Civ. Dunespeaker doesn't seem to work properly. I can't build roads on deserts, but that's supposed to be okay, right?

Problem is, my "free desert roads" don't seem to connect with anything else! I can't connect a desert city with a non-desert city via land because I'm not allowed to build roads on the desert AND the desert "road" my civ supposedly receives doesn't connect with regular roads! Is this supposed to be normal? Am I stuck with isolated cities until I can get a sea connection somehow??

Sidenote: connection between two cities on desert terrain works normally.

This ruined my Malakim campaign...

Malakim territory autoterraforms to desert over time. If the process goes too slow for you, get adepts.

I believe the desert free roads thing still connects to rivers, so add a road up/down stream that also connects and you should have a connection - at least until the auto-terraform occurs.
The other alternative, besides patiently waiting for desertification to occur is to use sea and ocean trade.
