Good morning ;)

I've been lurking here for quite some time so figure I'd post.

I have version 474.03 that I'm currently playing, but not sure if it's the 'most up to date version'?

If it's not, anyone could help on how/where I could update the file?

I have DarkPanda's JCivED and want to try some of the patches (if applicable).

PS. I did a quick look through of posts, but maybe I'm just missing it...

Thanks all!

Edit: http://www.civfanatics.com/civ1/faq/civfaq2.php the link to the update states 'page not found'.

Hope this helps:

«VERSION 2
Version 2 was supposed to fix the Advisor Bug, but it
didn't. It did remove the Debug keys though, so it is
different from version 1.

VERSION 3
Version 3 introduced several important changes that affect
game play.

Cities must have a population base of five or more to
support taxman or scientist specialists.

Under a Despotic government, citizen unhappiness will
increase with the number of cities you control. This may
lead to 'very unhappy' citizens, (recognizable by their
red shirts) who must first be converted to normal unhappy
citizens before then can become contented. This effect
occurs to a lesser degree under other government types.

A maximum of 3 units per city may be used to impose
martial law. (I.e. Convert unhappy citizens to content
citizens.)

Cities may be renamed at any time. Click on the RENAME
box or press the 'r' key on the city status screen.

Transport units no longer count against city unhappiness
under Republic/Democracy.

The maintenance cost of Barracks has been changed to
1/2/3 coins at the Prince and King difficulty levels, and
2/3/4 coins at the Emperor level.

VERSION 4
Version 4 is the high-density disk edition of version 3. It
is identical in all other respects.
VERSION 5
Version 5 was supposed to fix the Advisor Bug again, but it
didn't. There is no difference between version 5 and 3 in
playability.»

Heya Theov,

It does help, so ultimately, there's really no difference, but seems that version 5 would be the 'best'.

Would you (or anyone) know what version would be needed to use the patches on the JCivED? (I'm assuming DarkPanda would know this).

Also, would you happen to know where I could update my civ.exe file to version 5? the FAQ post is no longer working.

Thanks for your assistance :)

As far as I can tell, most people play either version .01 or .03. They don't like the changes, or just never cared to get the other versions.
Some people prefer .03 - but there aren't real big differences in gameplay - minor stuff mentioned above. I wouldn't say any of the 2 is better though.

The patches Darkpanda uses are for .01 IIRC - I bet he mentioned it somewhere. It's what he uses and what I use.
I wouldn't break a sweat about it.

Ok perfect ;)

I appreciate the responses!

PS. I just wanted to change the colors of the civ's hahahaha

To be more precise, the version I am using as a basis for CIV.EXE reverse analysis is English 474.01. Version 475.01 is nearly identical, except for 6 bytes.

That said, most of the JCivED patches support versions 474.03, 474.04 474.05 and French 474.05 as well, because it takes little time to find the matching bytes in other versions once I found it 474.01 (some times harder than others).

Historically, I always played the French version 474.05, because I'm French.
But since I started my latest MAP endeavours 1.5 years ago, I am concentrating on English 474.01, both because it has the Debug mode available (Shift+56), which helps a lot in reverse engineering, and because I can work with the assumption that all other versions are simply deriving from this one, so I can concentrate on the differences only.

The only versions that never went through my hands is EN 474.02, and other language versions as well (German, Russian, ...).

Finally: the CIV colors patch in JCivED works for all versions I mentioned above, so no worries with 474.03. If you have any problem making it work, let me know.

Sorry, I just realized that the patch I'm talking about is not released yet! :( All the more reason to push for a release, I suppose...

Hey DarkPanda,

First, thank you for replying :)

Second, when trying to use the 'civ1_custom_tribe_name+color - rev.0' patch, on the bottom (where you can 'apply patch' and 'revert patch', it states, 'The selected patch does not support your version of CIV.EXE (CIVILIZATION (TM) - Version 474.03 (English))'

That's why, at first, I thought it was the version of civ, so not sure.

Appreciate your help!

And PS. I was hoping i had version .01, but ohhhh well, haha

Ok I see, that's actually another patch...

The description may be confusing so let me explain a little further:

- When starting CIV in the normal way, you can choose what Civ colour you're going to play among the 7 available, but then you cannot change the Civ "name", only the Leader name (i.e. your name)

- You can actually change the Civ name if, instead of pressing enter (or clicking) on a Civ in the selection dialog, you press ESCape, in which case a "Civ name" dialog pops up and prompts you to enter you own Civ name... But in this case, your Civ colour are chosen randomly for you among the 7 available, i.e. you cannot select which of the 7 colours you have

So the purpose of the patch above is make it possible to both choose a custom Civ name and choose your Civ colour among the 7 available.

It does not allow you to change the 7 Civ colours, though... For this, have a look at this thread.

Finally, the fact that 474.03 is not supported is simply because I didn't have this version at the time I created the patch.

Thanks again ;)

I read through that thread, but didn't have a program to let me edit the civ.exe file. Looks like I'll have to check one out and change it up (I was hoping that I was just overlooking something more simple).

Thanks for your assistance and, may I add, it's amazing to see how many people still enjoy old school game(s) like Civ
