The explosion of units since Sandris took the field is amazing.
Any thoughts on unit holes which still need to be filled?

My list would include the space East of Germany...
Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary, Russian tribes and Kingdoms of the Medieval era.

Early industrial units of all sorts. Post Napoleon. Early rifleman, extending to WWI era.
Calvary units from this period as well.

What if units... had the Hittite empire survived until the 20th century...

Early industrial units of all sorts.
Notably, Africa has very few gunpowder (late 18th - 19th c.) units when there were a few powers that took advantage of trade with Europe to modernize. Infantry, certainly, but also some interesting possibilities for cavalry units. There some very good Polynesian units, but again nothing from the era when indigenous societies were resisting colonization.

There is a nearly complete absence of historical female units, despite there being quite a few times and places where there were whole units of women. Not just ancient amazons, but - for example - the Mino, an elite unit of the Dahomey Kingdom in the 18th & 19th c.. There is a long tradition in India of women going to war including generals & ranis who led from the front. I'm sure there were more in other parts of the world as well.

afaik there aren't many (if any) SE Asian units from the era of the Khmer Empire up through the beginnings of the gunpowder era.

While there are plenty of Aztec units, we lack Mayan or Incan - despite both civilizations being arguably greater in extent and endurance.

A wider variety of "scouts", "explorers", & "irregulars" would be nice. Xuanzang, Yijing, Robinson Crusoe, Shackleton, Richard Burton, T. E. Lawrence, ... there's plenty of inspiration for visual reference.

There's a dearth of distinctly Asian & African armies, great leaders, and king units. from before the Modern Era.

That's why they are so cool!

this is not an or/or question, the question was what we would like to add... for me that's smaller elephant units.

Maybe some different weapons. I love the slingshot guys, rock/axe thrower ideas. The suicide bomber that looks like a worker - I applaud those ideas.
Maybe a dragon that shoots nukes or something.

I'm going to assume that you're talking primarily about traditional units, and not units that fit in the category 'things I'd like to see', 'cause I have a ton of those.

Generally, folks don't make workers to go with their unit packs. Scout units are minimal, and 'leader' units are surprisingly rare. I wait in vain for a good Civil War era worker, or to see a worker use a plow. Modern leaders could travel in Limos, Medieval and early industrial leaders in Carriages.

I've only seen one 'slave' unit ever made by anyone other than Fireaxis (Plotinus' 'Chain Gang' unit), even though the game has a mechanism just for that type of unit.

I note that there's nothing in the database for Gestapo, KKK, or KGB and only two pirates of any sort. Also, no frogmen.

There is only 1 Mexican unit of any value at all, and it isn't mounted.

As far as modern units go, no one has done sets yet for Isis, the Taliban, or Libyan Rebels (google image search libyan rebel pickup trucks for some great images), or for Boko Haram. For a change of pace, there are, alas, Child Soldiers of every type from every era.

In SciFi/Fantasy land, there are no (walking) units for the Borg, Klingons, Cybermen, or Apes, and no Matrix or Terminator units.

Shiro had quite an expansive pack last year: Warriors of the Americas Mega Pack

Wyrm did a KGB Guard

And Shiro did a couple insurgents the past couple years: Islamic Insurgent and Palestinian Insurgent

He also did a Mujahideen

no Matrix or Terminator units.

Terminator T-800 by TheMorpheus

One area that I think goes overlooked, especially when using advanced autoproduction is immobile upgradeable units, particularly in the industrial & modern ages. Similar to the "shipyard" and "hull" units I'd like to see unfinished hulls for armor units like tanks, apc's, cannons, etc. Or, unfinished aircraft frames, sub hulls, etc.

I also think there's quite a lack of unit lines for most asian civs (Korea, China, etc.) from late medieval through to the cold war with the exception of, maybe Japan.

I hope he finishes the North American part of that some day. I have much use for that.

I was thinking more of the sorts of KGB guys who ordered those guys around.

Oh yeah, thanks, I'd forgotten about those. Future mods will probably need lots of those sorts of units, including terrorist worker units.

Oh, I knew about that one. I meant we have no other Terminator units. There are some free Terminator models available that include the T-600 and several Hunter Killer units. Just sayin'..

And could that begin with 19th century Chinese railroad workers? :mischief:

Thank you for the link. It does have the Inca & related groups well represented. OTOH there are 3 units labelled "Pre-Classical Mayan" which, without the label, look generically Meso-American or Central American. They could even fit with his Amazonian group. Nothing distinctly Mayan in their costume. No Classical Mayan units whatsoever. ShiroKoburre's work is outstanding - yet even in this pack it's Aztec (& related) 19, Incan (& related) 15, Mayan (sort-of) 3.

There's a bunch of Shiro's planned units I'd love to see finished one day... :( :please:
As you say ...

... coming up is the Classical Maya, Post Classical Maya, Flowery Wars (Tlaxcalla, Mixtec, Zapotec, and Tarascan), Caribs and various SW American Indians, which are mostly done. There will also be a "Resistance" pack which includes Inca, Mexica, and Maya warriors with European weapons.

And there will also be a Religious pack ...
... I also want to make artillery for the SW Indians, Maya, and Inca.

But even with that short-coming, glad you pointed us toward that pack.

Industrial and Modern age units are hard to come by for the Latin American nations. The Mayans have a tough time even early on though, to say nothing of other groups that aren't Aztec or Incan.

Like Balthasar said, there's a lack of gunpowder units for the African nations.

Aside from Japan, most of the Asian nations have holes. China is the best off, but even then there's trouble filling their lines between Renaissance and WW2. Good luck with regards to Korea, Mongolia, the Khmer, or any other East Asians.

The Amazons... no gun-wielding cavalry at all, almost no non-horse mounted units, and no gunpowder units pre-rifles. There's also only one female unit that has paradropping animations.

I agree more female units would be nice. I had a tough time finding units to fill the positions I wanted a female to be in.

Also would be nice if more units were specific characters/king style, not just basic/generic swordsman, infantry, and archer units.

Having commanded a mixed, male and female, unit, I have a dim view of female combat units, but to each their own view.

I think that someone made a Kraken/Giant Squid unit, but a Moby Dick/White Sperm Whale unit would be nice for the Terra Fantasia mod. Is it possible to make a repeated ramming attack flic that the computer would use?

Back when Ogedei was actively working on his wuxia scenario, one of the problems he mentioned was not enough variety to have individuals the way there are in EFZI, for example.

It's a dream world - totally unrealistic - but if we had units to match the many excellent leaderheads made over the years ...

Yes, its true they have their problems. For my purposes though, they are more of a special type of unit, not normal military.

A Gentleman & Scholar, as ever  tom2050 made one (see attached.)

Now, as for the rest of you ... Who ya gonna call? :cooool:

I. Early Industrial Gunpowder (And a "What-If" or two: )
(1) There are musketmen to be found in each of Balam-Agab's "Late Rajputs," "Maratha" and, "Sikh" packs.
(2) I've "re-upped" the100thballoon's fine Arabian Musketman. (no .pcxs.)
(3) Ditto Rifle's old-but-good Bedouin Raider.
(4) There's an Incan Musketman by Dom Pedro II in the db.
(5) Ditto a DPII "Choson Musketman."
(6) ... And his Meiji Rifleman.
(7) Also Sword Of Geddon's Egyptian Musketeer
(8) Kinboat's Zulu Rifle-Armed Cavalry.

II. Other "What-Ifs:"
(1) Wyrmshadow's Roman Grenadier, Monitor, and Cruiser.
(2) ALL of Wyrm's Harry Turtledove units.
(3) Wyrm also made, at my request, a lovely Aztec Fokker DR7.
(4) I've attached a zip of 3 musket units (2 North American & 1 MesoAmerican) to this post in the hope that someone can ID the creators.)
(5) TopGun & Fire Fox's MesoAmerican iar_p_11f "gull wing" monoplane.
(6) There should be a lovely Aztec Mortar by utahjazz7 in the db ... ?

(@Balthasar - I have Genghis Farb's um, "infamous" slave unit, which I'm not allowed to post here ... ;) )
(@Theov - check out the elephants in the lion's share of Balam-Agab's collections.)

There are also some amazing "What-If" ships mostly by Orthanc (Citlalpol; Fune;
Khaat; Mexlti; Polynesian Frigate; Reuua; Umkhumbi) which, if not in the db, certainly soon could be.

... And, nope, sorry, I'm not up to researching all those specific links ATM

I wait in vain for a good Civil War era worker [...]

... You mean like the one attached? :mischief: It's from 2003, but, if deemed Worthy, I'll re-up it.

Oz

P.S. Also, there's Plotinus' "Prospector" unit.
