t215 win - was ok game.

I settled to SW on hill, second city to east on riverhill and bought gems before bucharest could claim them (Kinda regret this placement wasnt good). 3rd city down to the river by silver, 4th city up by old faithful/ivory.

DoWed washington with 4 swords around turn 70 and his capital fell at turn 75. I also eliminated his second city because it had 3 ivory, 1 horse and 1 fur (however then washington was all gone so no RA parterner there). Dunno if I shoulda left his second city.

Worst part/most unluck.
1. Didn't find alex until t130ish, Asika had blocked the entrance to his lands.

2. Worst part of game was when all of the world gangbanged me (except alex) around turn 150 though canceling 3 RAs and preventing me from signing any more. Got 5 DoWs in about 4 turns even though I played peaceful after my first attack on washington. Maybe it was because I DoWed Washington early on - should you let AI do the declarations?

about turn 240 - what happened with rami and the 2 cotton? didn't really follow that? did you know that 2nd cotton was about to become available?

Ramses was too poor to renew the RA, and I didn't want to just gift him gold.

I saw the 3 cotton in his land at 2:39 and decided it was worth checking next turn.

Tried to go without RAs in the beginning. Started off ok, 2-3 cities and then NC. GL also.
Built a 4th city NE.

Tried to stay peaceful, but then Washington DOWed. I did not have a lot of military units but it was enough for him. At the same time I had to keep some military units to the south as Alex was growing bigger and didnt like me for my small empire.

At that time (PT built and Rationalism unlocked) I decided to sign RAs because I was about to fall behind too far. I guess only 2 or 3 RAs were completed anyway.
All production switched to military units and I killed Washington except for 1 city which was not near my empire.
Then Alex DOWed. He was ahead in everything and allied with all CSs except belgrade. I killed like 10 CS and most of his cities over time, with 2 armies one heading west and one SE towards Athens. First time I had rocket artilleries with 4 range and the double attack feature! yes!
Though he had cities of 120 strength I took him down city by city. As I killed him Ramses became bigger and bigger, but wasnt threatening me, his tech level was low as well.
After I took Athens I signed peace and clicked till the end... 1939 beakers / turn!

I would say it is kind of the safest way to win a science victory - get terretory and then cash and science will flow in automatically...

I was pleased with the way this game turned out but unfortunately, due to numerous crashes related to problems with "Steam synchronicity", I ended up playing turns 40-45 from sequential autosaves and eventually, in frustration, replayed 40-45 from a normal turn 39 save and continued thereon in offline mode. I therefore cannot in all honesty submit a first-play game.

To summarise, I settled in place, expanded to 5 cities whilst taking standard scientific Tech path, had a sharp war with USA before puppeting their 2 biggest cities, then largely settled down to a builder strategy. Lack of coal meant a foray south to capture a coal-containing CS, setting me up for a pincer-attack on Mali to secure a few extra luxuries and Wonders. I signed 22 RA (21 completed) but was a couple short in the key endgame because Russia had already overrun Egypt and Native America. I managed 6 consecutive Golden Ages encompasssing the latter portion of the game.

I tried to provoke Washington into declaring war on me, but he was a coward. Fortunately Askia had the right idea.

Link to video.

Thanks for posting this video. I have many questions and I hope you would be kind enough to answer them. I will start with a few on the game up to about turn 40.

First, a comment for your next video. You click very quickly and it is hard to follow what you are doing in trade windows unless one already knows what you are doing.

I was impressed by how much money you could get from neutral buyers. If I followed things correctly, you got 240g for a luxury from a neutral buyer with some haggling. How much do you go for from guarded? From neutral? From Friendly? Are there any tricks to the haggling sequence?

It appeared that when you settled the third city that you changed production in city #2 from monument to library. Did you lose all the previous production?

When you finished research of Trapping, your next choice was Calendar. I was surprised since you didn't have any plantation resources. Why this choice?

I learned from the game so far about selling gpt to rush a worker and the value of settling on a resource.

Settled in place. Built the Great Library on turn 44. The only troublesome moment was a warrior and archer rush by Askia, who declared on turn 41. I held him off with a fortified warrior and two archers. Settled for a nice peace deal after I had captured Tombouctu. Food seemed in short supply in the Capital so I built the Hanging Gardens there (turn 91). Also built the Hagia Sophia (turn 114) and used the resulting Great Engineer to rush build the Porcelain Tower. Later built Notre Dame and Taj Mahal for extra happiness and the Statue of Liberty. Meanwhile Washington built the Great Wall, the Pyramids, Chichen Itza and Machu Picchu for me. I declared against him on turn 139 and my army of 4 Longswords and 2 Catapults took Boston on turn 151, New York on turn 156 and Washington on turn 168. Hiawatha declared on turn 180 and accepted peace after I took 2 cities from him. Also had a phoney war with Alexander, but was never in any danger from his feeble attempts at invasion.

I gradually allied with all the city states, starting with the Maritimes, then the Cultural and finally the Militiaristic.

In all I built 6 cities and kept 5 puppets. A nice compact empire which, at the end, was bringing in 1256 science per turn and 249 gold per turn.

I'm not him but I'm pretty sure I can answer all your questions correctly.

1. Unless I'm mistaken you should always be able to get 209 and 1 or 240 on standard speed whether they are neutral or friendly. Unless they plan to attack you quite soon and they are just pretending to be nice.

2. All production put into a building or unit stays with that unit so you can always come back to that item. I assume he switched so he wouldn't be delayed on the national college.

3. He did it for the stone works. It gives 1 happiness and extra production. Plus its a requirement for theology which I assume he would be teching to in the near future.

Thanks for the information. I see that he built stone works after Great Library. #2 is a change from previous versions of the game and is useful to know.

Are there similar guidelines for strategic resources? Open Borders? Or is their price dependent on the situation and the Leader? Alex might very well value horses more than Rameses.

As far as I can tell strategic resources are basically if they want them. Not every ai will want them and some only want a few. As long as your friendly you should be able to get 45 gold per each resource unless you try to mass sell. Most only want a max of 5 and wont give you full value after that.

As for open borders 50 for friendly 43 if they are starting to become unhappy with you but are still listed as friendly.

Settled four cities. Entirely peaceful game, no one ever declared war on me (except in the last three turns). I wonder if that is an advantage or not; I guess annexing a few cities would have been nice too.

Also, nice of me to settle my capital close to a mountain.. but, perhaps I could try to do that also for the others cities? Next time then.

Thanks for the game.

Ok ok ok.... not a good game if I finished at that turn... but I liked it.

Mountain/River looks like a good start. I moved the warrior to see what was on the other side of the marble and found the coast but none of the coast hexes are also next to the mountain and a river. The hex to the sw looks good though, hill on river/mountain. I decided that would make a good starting point.

A culture ruin meant I hadn't got a clue whether Tradition or Liberty would be better from what I could see. Decided to play safe and go Tradition since you can switch easily to Liberty if it looks wrong. I will clearly want the left side of Rationalism but not sure what else. Went for 3 scouts as it is clearly a big continent. I really dislike early ruins as I have to take a bit of a gamble on what to go for policy wise before fully scouting, and in the end decided to go for a full tradition game where I'll try and fill out Tradition and then go Rationalism as my main trees. Will have to see if I can fit anything else in. The idea is to get to the +2 food capital and then make a settler, maybe with a couple more after National College. There is a great spot in the north right next to a mountain on a hill in range of 3 ivory and on Washingtons doorstep. I guess we'll be waging war against America.

I kept a scout up in the north just to block Washington from expanding onto that ivory spot.

Found out something interesting. I wanted my capital to produce my worker and expand on the same turn but couldn't manage it. I put the growth to next turn and worker to 2 turns but they both appeared next turn. Does that mean the population growth specialist was put to work straight away on a production tile and allowed the worker to be built the same turn?

At any rate was able to build my first settler. Now should I try and use Great Library to tech into Civil Service or instead hold on to Classical Era for cheap research agreements towards education? I think I'll do the latter since I might want to build immortals and upgrade to pikes.

I have 3 stone so Calendar looks like a good priority research wise to get stoneworks before Great Library and National College.

Washington built New York by one of the Ivory I wanted but I was still able to get a city in range of 2.

I've been holding back on Medieval because I want to get RA's going at such a time that I can get Porcelain Tower, bulb Astronomy, and get Rationalism Opener all before they start to go off. The danger is that it costs me 250 gold because nations enter Medieval ahead of me.

I lost Hanging Gardens to Elizabeth - annoying! I had to spend a lot more gold buying tiles than I'd have liked to, in order to stop America settling on Iron, but at least I can sell the iron when i mine it.

Decided to declare war America when I started the RA's. Had only a couple at 250.

I think I may be overestimating pikeman, they seem to die pretty easily (I don't use them often). In fact my whole American attack is pretty useless. Thankfully lots more iron is coming online.

Research agreement spam was beautiful. now I just have to work out where to get the second wave to hit.

Washington beefed up too much and I was left about to lose 2 units to a counterattack after surrounding it. Decided to collect New York in a peace agreement in order to keep my army intact (plus it has ivory and furs so not too bad).

Used 3 GS to get the median up for my 2 later RA's. I did wonder if it would be worth using Scientific Revolution to get Research Labs but it was going to take me ages to simply build Public Schools so I figured it wouldn't be worth it. Also where is the coal? I might have to build a city in the south just to access some.

Now that I have all RA's in hand, I'll spend extra gold on Marine states as I can really do with some growth.

Greece took the southern coal spot so unless someone enters industrial era no factories!

Lack of coal is costing me so much. No power plant for me even though I have uranium!!

I think there were three main problems with this game. Firstly I haven't quite got the hang of a full Tradition start. I really wonder if I should of gone straight to writing and GL to bulb Philosophy followed by National College, only then worrying about settlers. My initial city took too long to get a library, and I was held back on the National College, and also follow up settlers as a result. Of course this would mean maybe buying a few warriors specifically to go to good city spots and block the other nations from taking them.

Secondly the war with America was poorly executed. He had a couple of units behind his capital that kept jumping out and picking off my units and then retreating. It simply never occurred to me that the AI might fight well, and I put myself in a bad position when it did. The original plan to kill America and then move in on the Songhai fell apart at that point.

Thirdly there was a good coal spot in the south that I waited far too long to go claim (Greece got in before me). Coal was vital in the end. I couldn't build my power plants without a factory.

I tried to provoke Washington into declaring war on me, but he was a coward. Fortunately Askia had the right idea.

Link to video.

A hypothetical question for Dave or anyone else. I am replaying the game along Dave's line, though some things are different. It does NOT appear that Askia is going to DOW me and I am at turn 71. Would you have built up a 4 swordsman + 1 catapault army and declared on Askia? Or would you play peacefully waiting for a DOW.

I was reading in another thread on strategy/exploits that some find they get 1 DOW without a big penalty and they take full advantage of it. In other words, they trade for all the AI's cash then DOW on the same turn.

Balibar

PS
I learned that you can reject peace offers. Dave rejected peace twice before capturing the capital. I had read elsewhere that a rejection of a reasonable peace offer leads to the warmonger penalty.

Dave rejected an offer for research agreement with Egypt at minimum cost. Why?

Quick facts:
3 cities approach
gl-nc-hg-chichen itza rush
got 4 puppets later from Vashington
coal from conquered Katmandu, means warmonger hate and
last turns "everyone vs me"-war that almost gave me 3rd great general
16/17 RA finished
policies: full liberty + basic commerce + left side rationalism + basic freedom

basic commerce gave me 100500 bonus gold during endgame even without satrap court in the capital :)

That was a nice game after all. Not the best I could play, but still its my personal record this patch.
Now Im gonna check that awesome video Dave provided. Tried to upload it on my ipad, but this thing fails to somehow. Anyway Im pretty curious how I can improve my strategy besides signing cheap RAs before getting to medieval and getting more national wonders.

For starters...I could never seem to get around to founding that third city with two big ones churning out wonders. Finally captured one when it was founded where I liked. Was pretty much constantly at war with Washington or Alex, partially because I didn't build up my military enough to be decisive and/or convince the AI to make peace. Mental note, even during peaceful games...have 5 or so advanced units to beat back invasions and snatch low-hanging fruit.
