Societal Structure: (classes, how people live, jobs)

The society of Lapaz is, for all intents and purposes, divided into two distinct subclasses, with numerous subgroups in each created by cultural and regional interests and ties. The two main groups are the Gubernoh and the Granha.

The Gubernoh are the aristocracy of Lapaz, and their positions are largely hereditary. Gubernoh rule over regions in Lapaz, usually a city, town, or village and the surrounding area. The Gubernoh come together after the death or removal of a Laguia and elect a new one from among their ranks. Each Gubernoh's vote is given a certain "weight" based upon the size of their domain, the number of people within it, and their wealth. The Gubernoh can also be called together by the Laguia to approve laws or other such special measures. Many Laguias do this on a regular basis to prevent as much backlash from new laws as possible due to the power of the Gubernoh to remove a failing Laguia from power by unanimous vote.

The Granha are a catch-all for the peasantry of Lapaz, from farmers to merchants. In most parts of Lapaz they are relatively powerless due to the hereditary nature of the Gubernoh, but in most cases are treated well, especially because most of the local bureaucracy is drawn from the ranks of the richer and more educated Granha, usually the merchants. In a few unique cases, as in the People's City of Labohka which dominates the mouth of the River Mehur, the Granha vote the Gubernoh into their positions of power.

Religious Beliefs: (Name of your religion, if applicable. What do your people believe in?)

Lapacites largely believe in what is commonly known to traders from Afar as Goddess Worship. The Goddess, known as Mehur and not to be confused with the river named after her, is the only Goddess in the universe, although She has Many Faces and chooses to reveal them in different ways to every person and culture. Despite Her Many Faces, however, Mehur reportedly looks very favorably upon the Lapacite people, and for this reason provided them with their protected and fertile homeland. Ringed by the Sentinel Mountains and with the River Mehur running through its heart, Lapaz is truly a blessed land. For this blessing, the people of Lapaz must worship the Goddess wholeheartedly and devote themselves to serving Her wishes. As a part of showing their devotion, each year every Lapacite gives up a portion of their profit, be it gold or wheat, of the year to the River Mehur, whereupon it is carried to the home of Mehur somewhere in the Great Western Sea.

In this way, Mehur is the center of every Lapacite's life. When they are born they are dipped into the waters of the River Mehur, to notify Mehur of their birth, and when they die their body is set afloat on the Great Western Sea so that they may join Mehur in her Glorious Home where she will greet them and grant them an eternal life of bliss in exchange for their devotion.

Customs: (What are your peoples; traditions?)

Each year the Sacrifice to Mehur must be made, with the giving up of a portion of the year's profit into the River Mehur so that it may be carried to Mehur's Home to show each Lapacite's devotion. This is usually accompanied by a grand feast.

Productivity- What better way to show your devotion to Mehur than to make full use of the great land She has provided the Lapacites?

Devotion- One can show Mehur their worthiness by their devotion to the completion of Her tasks, or any task in general.

Accumulation of Wealth- Devotion and productivity are shown by the accumulation of wealth as well, and if you get it through trade you could even be seen as spreading the Word of Mehur to the peoples elsewhere... what better way to be shown worthy?

Economy: (What do you produce?)

Fish and food of various types. Outposts near the Source of the River Mehur produce many types of metals from mines, as well as send lumber downstream for the construction of both river barges and seagoing trader vessels. Lapaz is known for its olive oil and pottery, which fetches high prices in the lands of its trading partners.

Brief History: (Where do your people come from?)

Lapaz, sheltered as it is by mountains and fed by the great River Mehur, has been a peaceful land for much of its existence. As cities and civilization grew relatively unimpeded, however, they came into conflict with each other over the valuable land near the River Mehur's banks. After a few devastating wars and rebellions, the Gubernoh of Lapaz that had been developing as the cities rose came together in an effort to preserve the peace and their own holds on power. They formed a Confederation led by an elected ruler, whose function began as the arbiter of disputes between Gubernohs but whose role slowly morphed into the guide of the whole Lapaz civilization. Lapaz has slowly expanded outwards along the coasts and up the River Mehur for hundreds of years, displacing the native peoples with sheer numbers.

Brief History: As the waters of the three rivers flows through Golba, the years come and go, the world turns, the world burns, and what was will come again. Crouched protectively along the banks of "their" river, the Golbans have weathered and unlucky existence, attacked frequently by outsiders, necessitating strong defenses and a collective sense of urgency throughout the ranks. As times have changed, they have looked towards peace and trade to further supplement their nation, but are prepared all the same for dark days on any horizon.

Chapter One: The Blessed Lands (Y260)



It is often debated where civilization began. Some said it came into existence in the hot sands of Aricia. Others stipulated that the first "civilized culture" thrived along the banks of the Sanctos river in Brelsia. However, there is damning evidence that it may have, in fact, started in a dry corner of Valacio. Legends stated that this section of Valacio was once a barren wasteland, but the gods living in the Lake of the Moon sent streams of life down the slopes of the Arnesti Mountains.

The region is often divided into two subregions. To the south, in Mehureeoh, the lands are still hot and dry, but there are several jagged rivers cutting through the arid sands. The north is a much less wicked land. Vozle, as it's called, is a land of tall grasses and is more sparsely populated. Bands of nomads sweep the savannah in hope of finding packs of game.

Mehureeoh is agreed upon as the "center" of this explosion of civilized population. The region was named after the River Mehur, the westernmost river of the three notable trails of water that slice through the sands. At the mouth of the Mehur River stands the bustling town of Labohka, home to several thousand Lapacites. To any foreigner, Lapaz seems like a land of lunatic farmers who dump their hard earned crops into the river to be carried into the abyss. But the Lapacites affirm that this is their purpose: to sacrifice what they can, for they have been blessed by Mehur.

Up along the river, numerous outposts dot the banks. The mineral-hungry Lapacites have abandoned them, however, because dwellings have been erected in front of their mines and strange men are catching the fish they once caught during their journeys up and down the river. These people are the Mtskhat’ski. The lands belonging to the Mtskhat’ski, called Kvt’simprvli Msirit’svarkhvarali, are a recently settled land. It is rumored that the Mtskhat’ski come from far away, as they have brought these strange animals called "sheep" along with them, but according to Grand T’svari Khmlatarebli, they are here to stay.

Along the coast south of the River Mehur, lives the Incabra people. Once an exuberant, trade-happy people, the Incabra were inherited my a bloodthirsty leader named Khavo. The Incabra were bo longer permitted to trade with the "inferior" Lapacites or the "uncivilized" Ghaskans, the people of the Tarks river. The Ghaskans, on the other hand, are not as isolated. The growing port of Latim is home to several thousand traders and farmers who do business all over the region.

Most traders like to deal with the people of the Golbari River, the largest river in the region. A lauded stop for traders happens to be a coastal bastion called Thalas, situated right at the mouth of the great Golbari. The Fireni who inhabit Thalas are a sharp, warm people who reap benefits from the passing traders. Firen has accumulated a respectable wealth from the constant traffic.

The Maculali dominate the banks of the Golbari up until where the river forks. Most Maculali traders are bottomfeeders who try to suck some gold out of passing traders who really wish to trade at Old Golba, the largest trade hub in the region. For this, the Golbans look down upon the Maculali and see the wealth they've amassed as stolen goods. However, the Golba would be rich either way, because traders from the mountains constantly bring in precious gems and shiny metals from the deep earth.

The three forks of the river are very similar. The easternmost fork, although not home to a unified state, is a collection of small tribes and clans who share ancestry with Ishkant. The Ishi are a bitter people who thrive in and around a mountain bastion called Skan. The Ishi are not very trusting of foreigners, even those who are the same race. To the west of Ishkant are the Illdiran people. The people of Illdira are rumored to be direct descendants of the five tribes who walked the highlands along the banks of the Golbari hundreds of years ago. The Illdirans, however are a bit more open. Illdiran traders are much more well known and are rumored to have the shiniest metals and the largest gems in the region.

East of the Golbari River, the sands are even more ruthless. Life is sparse in this desert, but a few cultures call this hostile land home. If it weren't for a small area concentrated area of oases, the Drati would probably be dead. Emperor Ightam, however, Insists that is was pure destiny that his people were taken here by the Great God Likang. The Drati are not big traders, given their distance from significant trading hubs, but they often do business with the Butaliaites of the south coast. Butalia's capital Jomok, happens to be situated along a particularly hospitable strip of coast where wheat can be grown. Although they trade with Draten, Butaliaites view Drati traders as lesser people almost. The Drati are seen by Butaliaites as unorganized and not very keen.

Vozle hosts an entirely different collection of beings. Perhaps the most strikingly unique is the Sauromavians. Although the Sauromavians have a female leader, that is not the most unique part about their culture. (The Heritites to the south are led by a former Sauromavian priestess. The true distinguishing feature is that Sauromavia is dominated by females. Much to the chagrin of the patriarchal societies of Mirysk and Ez Dera Than from up the river, Sauromavia is a very solid state with headed by Yulaeotju Scytho, the head priestess, who is perhaps tougher than any man in the land. It is said that the people of Mirysk migrated from the mountains from across the Arnesti mountains, but many Sauromavian priestesses jokingly insist that they are cowardly males who fled Sauromavia, tired of being subjugated by the superior females.

North of this area is the Ishalics who thrive on the banks of the K'lish River, a river much more lush than any of those to the south. Ishalin is relatively cut off from the rest of civilization, although countless scouts have returned from upriver claiming that there were people in the jungle who burned newborns alive and wore human bones as necklaces.

With rapid increases in population density and settlements sprouting along the banks of every river in the region. Many different cultures are interacting with others for the very first time. For some cultures, there is prosperity as they work together and share goods. For other cultures, there is the seeds of animosity, such stark differences in culture are often too striking for people to accept. But from the northernmost savannahs of Vozle to the southern banks of Mehureeoh, it is evident that these are the blessed lands.
