I hate it just as much. Ended up falling a sleep and just woke up. Ok, fine, I lost an hour, but time to play the game. 10 minutes of "The Steam servers are too busy to handle your request for Sid Meier's Civilization V. Error Code (53)"
I received the same error message when I downloaded some dlc and it was due to my anti-virus software. Try disabling your AV software and see if that works.
On another note, please try to be civil about STEAM, even if you hate it. Thanks.
I actually like Steam a lot. I like not having to go find a DVD if I want to reinstall a game. But their implementation is sometimes kind of... haphazard.
Odd, I let Steam run this evening and the game DLed super fast without a hitch. It's possible that the C++ and DX runtime setups may take longer to run than it took to download, which is ridiculous considering how beast my PC is.
As others have suggested, the problem may not be Steam itself.
