I want to outline another little slingshot available in the game. I sort of stumbled on it by accident.

I was playing a custom continents game (3 continents, 10 opponents, large map, monarch difficulty) and wanted to see if i could get to machinery and optics early to make contact with the other civilizations earlier.

So i was playing as Ghandi and decided to avoid fishing and meditation so i could light-bulb machinery later on (see below).

I teched some basic worker techs and even grabbed Hinduism when i went to priesthood through polytheism.

I built the oracle after founding my second city and took code-of-laws. I kept founding cities (to five eventually) and switched to caste system. I ran merchants in my oracle city and quickly got a great merchant to light-bulb metal casting (i had not yet researched math but did have bronze working and pottery).

Meanwhile i built granaries and an anti-barb defense in my cities and started on forges while running scientists in two other cities. Eventually i popped a great scientist and used him for machinery (i had not taken fishing, meditation and i had researched math).

When i soon got a third great person (my second scientist), I had a look at the great people tech preferences and realized i could choose between teching fishing, sailing, compass and using him for optics, meditation and using him for philosophy, or construction and using him for engineeering.

So i researched construction and light-bulbed engineering and started whipping trebuchets in my little SP-type cities. This was just before the turn of the BC->AD flip. The round i whipped, the french attacked me and soon i had their trebuchet-battered cities.

The best part is that with trebuchets, you can rip cultural defense down very quicky and i didn't take a single loss in taking the french cities. Archers, even fortified and on a hill (but without cultural defense) are not much of a match for CR3 trebuchets (they get experience quickly).

When i get back to the game (either tonight or next monday), it shouldn't be too hard to get compass (already got fishing and sailing) and light-bulb optics with my next great scientist so it may have slowed getting to optics, but i doubt it slowed it by much. Who knows?- we might still be able to light-bulb philosophy. I doubt the french (or anyone else on my continent) will be.

You could probably get the engineering tech much earlier then i did (approx 1ad) but i wanted to have 4 cities with granaries, forges and barracks (and a fifth that just needed barracks to catch up) so i could produce enough trebs to take advantage of the early tech.

So yeah, another little trick available for anyone who wants to try it out (its probably been out-lined before, but for me it was new)

I have been coming to the conclusion that something like this is the way I need to go. I keep running into Protective Longbows due to early AI Feudalism. These guys are almost impervious to Catapults. Plus, if you don't manage to kill them on the first wave, expect them to have another CG promotion the next time around.

Nothing in the pre-Modern era is totally impervious to cats. Give your cats nothing but barrage promos and make a ton of them. I've had to take down protective longbowmen with drill and CG2 and CG3 promos before... on a hilltop city, ugh. I lost most of my cats but they made the job easy for the wave of swordsmen that came right after. The cats that survived got their Barrage 3 promos. :)

Trouble with throwing heaps of cats at a protective civs city on hills with CG2/CG3 is damaging that top defender, sometimes it takes about 4-5 cats to even win a round for me, meanwhile every other defender is at half strength :p .

Nice thread Immaculate, I wonder what slingshots there are left to discover...

The only one I've stumbled on is having a GS lightbulb Liberalism because I hadn't researched something which I now can't remember...

Liberalism TADAM

The big deal about this lightbulbing is you have to leave out machinery and fishing to avoid printed press before liberalism.
Now, it may be useful for a fast musketeer rush:
You lightbulb liberalism, take nationalism, trade for gunpowder (or trade to backfill machinery and guilds to have the research faster).

@cabert
You are courageous man, to beeline to Liberalism with no Fishing ;)

or crazy *giggle*. i've been known to gift techs to the AI to boost them towards researching the pre-reqs for astronomy for me while i beeline for liberalism (in my close-but-haven't-won-one-yet deity-OCC-diplomatic games).

what would you take from lib? i kinda hate to take printing press from it since the AI will tend to tech that one themselves and i can hope to trade for it, probably have to lightbulb or self-tech some of it but they'd spare me some of the beakers if i'm lucky. in that scenario, in those particular games, i'd prolly take nationalism looks like at first glance.

i certainly hope you'd not take fishing!

Thanks Cabert.
The funny thing about that is I was doing the Al Capone Challenge a while back as Nappy and one of the goals was to get Gunpowder.
I might have to check the save game I see what techs I had, and what I took with Liberalism, maybe I took fishing...:crazyeye:

I guess the faster method would be, use the Oracle Slingshot to MC, assign a Engineer for a GE to lightbulb Machinery, Researching Writing, build a library and assign 2 Scientist Specialist for a GS to lightbulb Engineering, remember to research required techs for Engineering eg - Maths => Construction and remember to ignore certain techs so you can lightbulb Engineering. but that's a bit too stream line and extreme for my taste.

Well, I did this theoretical liberalism beeline only for the brain twisting thing (=fun). It doesn't seem very useful.

I checked for artists and prophets, too. Both have liberalism after printed press. Not very useful to lightbulb PP then liberalism :(.

Of course, if you manage to trade for gunpowder, you could take chemistry for free, or replaceable parts (needs banking too, but that's usually tradable).

Printing press comes before liberalism only if you research machinery. Also you can research fishing /sailing/calendar/compass if you start with fishing or need it, then liberalism will be ready again. Really liberalism slingshot isn't so bad at all, if you get gunpowder right after, since you can then nationhood for several muskets.

I edited the beeline including this. Good catch :goodjob: .
Avoiding machinery still seems a bit odd IMHO, but in specific circumstances, it can be good.
