Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

1. It occured that there are only 3 european powers in-game, everytime I start a new one. How to fix it? (I don't want to load a whole mod, just to fix something in the xml files)
2. How to change the european sea tiles range? which xml file is responsible for it?

I don't if you saw this part of this game, but in the main menu:
if you clik on "Single player" then on "custom game", you will be able to choose who will play in your game.

Hi

I am thinking of buying this as I used to love playing colonization. Is this game purely a remake of the original (other than the graphics) are is there new functionality etc?

Thanks

If you loved the original col, this new one is almost the same. It doesn't add anything except for a better graphic and borders (civ IV) and a more balanced gameplay (i mean trade and building strategies are now as efficient as the military approach). Some things are, by the way, missing from the original game (natives are not a threat at all and very easy to wipe out also at highest levels, colonists don't learn the professions while working, starting position is not random, there is no fountain of youth... only to quote some of the neglected features).

The learning curve is very fast and in the long run the game becomes a bit repetitive. Fortunately there are some amazing mods around. Some reintroduce also the missing-from-the-original features, others radically change the gameplay. There are no new scenarios, though some were produced by the modders and some are being made.

At the actual state of things, civ4col is not an evergreen like the original col, but the price is not so high (you can also buy it used, that is my suggestion) and it gives you many hours of fun because, in the end, is a civ/col game.

I suggest you to read the posts in the strategy section of this forum. You will find a lot of comments about the mechanisms of the game and the problems/bugs/lacks related to them. You will have an idea of the gameplay experience and more informations to help your decision.

Do these mods work for mac?
I've downloaded the .rar file, it is recognized by the game, but when i try to load, it says it has issues loading the xml file.
anyone else have this issue

I have Civ4: Complete, and when I have the disk in there, it says that I have the incorrect disk, well, "Please insert the original Colonization CD/DVD." But I have the Civ4: Complete disk! Could someone help meh?

Larxon - Does Civ IV Complete include Colonization? The DVD pack states 'Includes Civilization IV Game of the Year plus Warlords and Beyond the Sword expansion packs' but does not mention Colonization.

feldmarshall - I don't know of any demo for Colonization.

The Civilopedia says that a settlement's preferred good can be found on the settlement's info panel after you speak w/ the chief. However, no matter where I scroll or place my cursor, I've not been able to locate it. Any ideas how to find it?
Thanks.

Finding a Settlement's Wants
You can only know what a native settlement wants. You can see the good picture to the right of settlement name.
However, you must visited this settlement to know.

Quite a few questions from a new C4C player ;)

When you first arrive is it better to settle in one city or 2?
The case I see for two is effectively having an extra free pop to work the city tile allowing you to convert 2 sources of raw materials but would settling 1 city to work excess food be more profitable? Is it worth improving the land at this point and if not does it change with a silver or hardy pioneer start?

Whats the best use for converted natives?
They take ages to train myself and can't learn from native villages, my gut feeling says to send them together to some spot to produce horses, getting the most from they're bonuses without too much investment?

Do indentured servants and petty criminals take longer to learn at native villages?

Stay with a single colony at first. Settling that initial colony is free but for a second colony you have to pay the locals for the land. Also it is best to use any spare colonists as scouts initially, there is a lot of free gold available early in the game but only if you get in first. Yes your tactics may change somewhat depending on what immigrants are available, you would certainly put a hardy pioneer to work improving your land.

Converted natives get a bonus when working the land so make them Farmers, Fishermen etc. Or if you have a specialist available but no corresponding planter/trapper etc use a convert instead.

Do indentured servants and petty criminals take longer to learn at native villages?

Actually I'm not sure about that but I think they take the same time. I either send them to a native village for training, or use them as scouts or dragoons.

How do you get natives to help fight the king's army? I know you can pull a wagon up to a village and try to get them to declare war on another colonizing power via the trading screen but I don't see an option to fight the king.

I think the only way is to have a defensive pact before you start your war of indipendance.

Hello,

I was wondering how to destroy my own colony? Is it posibble? In the "old Colonization" it could be done, by dragging all citizens outside colony (if it had no stockade or any other defense inprovements). In the Civ 4 Colonization I can't find a way to destroy my own colony :( Maybe you guys have some idea how to do this?

Yes that was a handy feature of the original game. If my scout found a treasure wagon I'd form a colony with him, export the treasure, and then abandon the colony to get my scout back. Unfortunately you can't do that now.

I can suggest two options to dispose of an unwanted colony. Either gift it away to another European power or declare war on the local tribe and leave the colony undefended. Neither option is really satisfactory so you have to be very careful about where you do establish your colonies.

Hello
I'm a real newbie. I have never played any of the other civ games before, and bought civ colonization for my mac. I'm really struggling to get going! I've been managing to send me ship back and forth to Europe and pick up a some new people. However, I can't seem to send cargo back to trade. When my ship is in the square that's part of my settlement how do I get to the load cargo button mentioned in the instructions?

thanks!
