Civ V Exansions: Higher Requirements?

Hi, all. I'm new to Civilization V, and I've been playing vanilla for now. I was considering buying both Expansions, but I was warned by a friend with a similar specs PC than me that with the Expansions installed the game would crawl for him. I was wondering if it could be possible that the Expansions would add to the game requirements or if this may be a problem with his particular version of the game (not exactly legally obtained).

Just to clarify: Vanilla Civilization is running fine, but I was warned the Expansions could have trouble.
