Is there a specific ideology you guys prefer? I know it depends on what victory type you pursue, but I have found that adopting Freedom typically helps me with whatever I'm trying to do.

Order is pretty cool too - I like that one that they have that allows you to build factories in half the usual time, and gain science from your factories.

But I find that Freedom can actually help me conquer people better than autocracy does. Volunteer Army (6 free Foreign Legions) , and then upgrading those all into regular Infantry, can instantly make you a force to be reckoned with. I also like a lot of the GP bonuses with Freedom, and the policy that gives you 4 influence per turn with cities you have a trade route with (Treaty of Organization) is OP as .

I generally go Autocracy for DomV (if it takes that long). The bonuses to unit purchasing, unit maintenance, happiness and clausewitzs legacy are perfect.

Order I like for science if I have coal, otherwise I'll go freedom and buy ship parts.

Freedom I pick for culture (or science when I have no coal and high GPT)

Freedom also has tenants for increased city strength and better unit production. It really does help with whatever you are trying to do.

I'll say it: order

Order is happy happy happy. Bonuses to internal trade routes and +25% science on factories. Cmon guys... Freedom you take because you want to cash buy your spaceship. Order has the added benefit of a high probability that half of the AIs will take order as well.

I used to take Order almost exclusively before BNW. Since BNW I have found that Autocracy is too fun to pass up. Favorite policy of all time is Gunboat Diplomacy. And Lightning War is also incredibly awesome, so much flavor in that policy.

Yep. Had a weird one in my game. Was first to ideology, picked Order...and all other 12 civs picked order as well right away.

Actually, i would prefer to use GE's to build spaceship parts (which you can do with order) than buy them with Gold.

I admit that Order comes pretty close to Freedom IMO, but I guess my main point is that Freedom competes with autocracy at its own game.

They thing I like about Freedom is that Treaty Organization or whatever it's called, where you get 4 influence per turn with city states you have a trade route with.

Use that to dominate WC, then have your religious belief where religion spreads twice as quickly to friendly city states, and pilgrimage.

Now you have a crapton of CS that have adopted your religion, serve as pressure hubs for your religion, rack up faith through pilgrimage, and use faith to buy great engineers, scientists, or whatever else you want.

All of them have something good and it really depends on my civilization. As Ethiopia I'd pick Freedom only. Or Autocracy as Mongolia or Huns or other warmonger civs. And Order for large civs.

I wish Order had a unique building.

I wish Order had a unique building.

It does -- Kremlin. Like Statue of Liberty and Prora, Kremlin provides 1 free social policy. Of course, its other benefit (+50% production of armor units, only in the city in which it is built) sucks in comparison to the other two.

If I am pursuing a peaceful victory, I choose Freedom all the way. If I am going for a Domination Victory, then I choose either Order or Autocracy. The other pair of ideologies are dependant on what type of pressure you are facing, on the SV or Diplomatic Victory. Then I choose the more appropriate of Order or Autocracy to keep the AI close while I pound away at them with my army.

I usually choose freedom if I feel like being peaceful or autocracy if I feel like being warmonger. Freedom takes too much estimation in economic achievements that add up to the sv, cv or dv that you want. Order I haven't really used that often and when I did I remember being with 2 other people in an island that were using freedom but weren't doing a very good job at it so they double dow me and failed. The host then booted me after he lost his troops.

The thing with being a host is that you always have to be patient with the players that want to enter and exit your room. Hosting would be great if it didn't take thaf long. Not only that but hosts online usually like to boot you so that you can finally host your own games.

I wish order could work as good as freedom for Korea (freedom specialists are OP especially with Hubble rationalism and Korea) just because I d like to do a North Korea style game (Bonus to nukes would be funy).

Otherwise ideologies depend on civ/victory type but order is classy :)

Actually if civ 5 diplomacy is bad the ideologies are very well balanced, freedom may be slightly ahead but they have slightly less happiness too.

I agree that Ideologies are a compelling and well-balanced part of the game. At Deity, my play is too weak to win with anything but full Tradition plus full Rationalism. But I have used all three Ideologies to good effect -- including SV with Autocracy and diplo with Order. I actually think Freedom is the most balanced, but also the weakest. Yes, slightly less happiness, and most of the Level 1 tenants are weak. Freedom has three decent tenants for war mongering, just nothing courthouse-wise.
