So is this cartoon style going to be the future of Civ? It was bad enough with Civ4, but this revolution thing is just crazy. What is the target demographics for this? Five year olds?

Surely Civ has always target a mature audience (of any age), with its somewhat complex gameplay. This graphical style seems misplaced, and I do not understand why Civ is moving in this direction.

um............this question has been asked many times and it all goes down to this........they want to attract more younger people to Civ that didn't want to try it for the PC because it looked too complex...... and if you don't like the cartoony graphics, you can buy CivIII at pretty much any store......

Businesses straying from their core competencies.... mmm always a good idea.

I started playing Civ in my teens, and nothing about this new style would have attracted me. Teens are not little children.

If the point is to appear less complex, then do something about the improvement spam that clogs up the landscape (in older Civs, dunno about this one).

well, by young they mean like 6-7 year olds........I mean, I loved civ III and started playing it at 5, but yeah, maybe young kids would like graphics like that.....besides, HY seen the battles? that looks pretty cool.........AND THE ATOM BOMBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The style of the older Civ games never actually seemed more "Mature" or "realistic" to me, it looked blocky and pixelated (Civ1) or dull and undetailed (Civ3).

It seems like that whole Zelda: Windwaker thing ("Zelda, moar liek Celda! Amirite?"), only this time it's more like "Civilization, moar liek cartoonilization! LAWL! Sid Meier? Moar liek KID Meier! LOL!". Really, only teenagers insecure about their own maturity would be bothered by the graphics. If you need to play dark and edgy M-rated games to feel like a man then chances are you aren't one.

The "hardcore" players who want "real" Civ will have mods created to "fix" this "problem" within a month, assuming this even carries over into Civ 5 (Sid won't let it, I know he won't...)

besides, windwaker and it's sequels are on a different timeline then the other ones.......

i don't know why people say it looks kiddish, im in my twenties and i think this game looks great, you don't have to be five to appreciate good art.

and on another note, sid would be limiting his market base too only the 18+ market, if he was to ditch the cartoonish nature, and go for a more realistic. version where blood flies everywhere and you can see people suffer intensly in the after effect of the radiation of a nuke.

It be cool, in a crazy evil way, but its just not the civ way.

I think the cartoonie artwork works brilliantly with the advisors, and the frenetic element that they're going to add to the game. Having those guys zipping into view and pushing each other around is really going to connect the player to the action, imo.

Hopefully, it'll end up being one of the features they carry over to the PC series of Civ.

Civ III seemed more serious... call it mature or stuffy as you wish. But civ I?
Cheesy newspapers headlines, pitchfork-wielding mobs and hilarious specialists (Einstein with a pointy hat ftw; also loved the early tax collectors).
Civ 4 with its cartoonish leaderheads and cheesy diplomatic text isn't even in the same league.

One thing I dislike about civ4: The civopedia. In earlier incarnations, this seemed more consistent and mature (or maybe I'm just pickier today).

Some low points:
The 'Strategy' sections in the civ entries. Either put in some effort and give a short in-game account for all, or leave it be... some of this is almost painful to read.
Fast Worker: If it's meant to be a joke, it doesn't work very well.
American civ: The list of 'American inventions'. No, regardless what you go by.

I completely agree. :clap::clap::clap:

And the worst cartoonish thing in Civ Rev in my eyes is, that they now do the whole (much too small) globe cartoonish too. The buildings of each city are standing now in visible different angles. :nope::nope: Even 5 year old children could have a problem with this.

It´s a pitty, that Civ 3 is not supported any longer and Firaxis and Take 2 are producing only such **** as Civ Rev or Civ 4. The civfans now are waiting for more than 5 years, that the semi-patch for Civ 3 is getting completed. Even the fans of Civ 4 are now waiting for a longer time that they are getting a working final patch. But no service for the fans and customers - only this **** Civ Rev.

Way to call a game **** when you've never even played it, but only looked at a few screenshots. Way to go champ. Have a medal.

I actually have to agree with Oatse, which is rare.......you shouldn't call a game **** when you've never even played it......I mean, Padma's one of the few people to ever have played it and he says it's good.......and he play CivIII too so..........

Civ always seemed kind of cartoonish to me. Remember in CivNet when you'd meet a communist government and all the advisors were in cartoon form behind the leader? I bet if they were maing Civ I in 2008 they'd make it look like CivRev or Civ4.

Oatse and Civfan333, this thread is about the graphics of Civ Rev, not about gameplay. To talk about the graphics is possible without playing the game. Oatse, if you want to give me a medal, it seems that you still have this medal. :D And I think with your off topic answer you still can keep it. :D

In this thread we are talking about the graphics of Civ Rev. And I repeat it: These Civ Rev graphics, especially of the globe and its cities in my eyes are ****. I gave arguments for it, but I only received off topic polemic answers.

"t´s a pitty, that Civ 3 is not supported any longer and Firaxis and Take 2 are producing only such **** as Civ Rev or Civ 4."

Well excuse me for thinking you were talking about gameplay when you said things like this.
If you were praising the games for graphics only then Civ3 wouldn't even be in that sentence unless that sentence included the words "Dull, crappy, 1990's era prerendering".

Oatse, it seems you deserve the medal you have received, as in your last posting you have forgotten the first part of my posting you citated:

"And the worst cartoonish thing in Civ Rev in my eyes is, that they now do the whole (much too small) globe cartoonish too. The buildings of each city are standing now in visible different angles. Even 5 year old children could have a problem with this."

I don´t agree with you about the graphics in Civ 3. I had big discussions in these forums about Civ 3 / Civ 4 graphics and I don´t want to repeat them here. Again: This is a thread about the graphic style of Civ Rev.

Yes, it's a discussion for the graphics style of Civ rev, that's why you bought up Civ3 and Civ4.

The third post by you, Oatse and nothing about the arguments for Civ Rev graphics. It´s wasted time with you, Oatse.

Way to point out the splinter in someone else's eye while being unaware of the log in your own.

On Topic: Civ Rev's graphics are neat.
