Election 50!
As the seeds of democracy have been spread the fledging republic has many interesting races nationwide. As many believed would happen, retired General James Mason declared his candidacy on February 21, and from most signs the moderate hero of Liberty NP will go unchallenged this year. Many potential candidates have decided to lobby for positions in the new government. The General stayed on the east coast for most of the first half of the year, giving speeches to the Industrial base. He took the very popular stance the military show be reduced, not removed, and in a stroke of genius he stated that the revolutionary army should be replaced with a much more technologically advanced, yet smaller force, keeping the unions and the businesses happy. He also hopes to provide incentives to the farmers of his home province and elsewhere in the union. On welfare he stated, we must do something about the horrible working conditions in our nation, if elected I will eliminate child labor and push for universally improved working conditions. However on the topic of Social Security, it would be totally irresponsible to create a welfare state when we are deep in debt. We cannot afford the luxuries of an advanced social safety net and it wrong to expect our children and grandchildren to pay for it. Polls have the General at 64% of the vote with 36% undecided, with an average 2%-4% margin of error.
Here are a few other interesting races in the nation.
House Races
Northeastern 27th District
In the Northeastern 27th congressional district, an urbanized district near the provincial capital of Liberty. The western portion of the district is comprised of factory workers, with the eastern portion comprised mostly of wealthier middle class and upper-middle class white collar workers, both fight Unitarian dream, but they seek different ways of achieving it. Regardless of their political ideology, the people of the NP 27th are elated to see that a two fiery candidates struggling for their district, liberal state representative Brian Doctrate and libertarian state senator William Johnson. Mr. Doctrate quickly took the lead by challenging his opponent to a debate, Mr. Johnson accepted under the (snobbish, according to many,) condition that Doctrate would pay the full cost of the debate. If that was not enough to gain populist support, he also donated $1.5 Million of his own wealth ($2 Million) and donated it to charity. Finally he ran a an ad campaign how he went from the slums of Liberty to the state house of representatives, give the workers of Liberty a sense that he was one of them. Johnson countered by offering a tax cut to industrialists to create new jobs and breathe life into the stalling economy. This was extremely popular among the upper-middle class and he even won over many non-union workers. The race could still fall either way; many are looking forward to the debates to make their final decision. Polls have Doctrate and Johnson nearly tied at 41% and 39% respectively, 22% of voters are undecided, the margin of error is 2-5 points.
Westernia 3rd District
In Westernias 3rd District, an urban region comprised mainly of the apartments of unionized industrial workers and their families spare a few small business owners, a race began. Not between a conservative and a liberal, but between a liberal and a socialist. Early polling had the liberal, Philip Redthwaite, candidate at 69% of the vote, and there was a general consensus that he would be the pragmatic and the most electable. His socialist opponent, Alexander Bukharin, held a mere 21% of the vote. Redthwaite began his campaign by construction a base infrastructure for the campaign, a central campaign office to coordinate his actions. He proposed a debate with Bukharin, which the son of socialist movement accepted. He printed flyers to advertise the future debate, set to take place in October. He did several interviews on the radio and on television in which he began to charm the undecideds. He gave speeches to business leaders, which gained him a large amount of funding, but no votes as the factory managers mostly lived outside of the impoverished district. He even tried stealing his opponents base of industrial workers, them of the impending danger of communism, but his warning fell on deaf ears and he was promptly ejected from the rally by Bukharin supporters. To sum up his platform, his main goal is to promote the workers in a way which will not damage the economy.
Alexander Bukharin, on the other hand ran on a platform which many business owners feared would put them out of business. His new Democratic-Socialist Labor Party ran on a platform of extreme wage hikes to $15 dollars an hour, when the cost of living was only $4. His extremely union friendly stances won him the hearts and minds of the workers and their families. His first act was to hire fellow Westernian Marxist Jacob Lanterns as his campaign manager, for a steep $500,000. He also conducted polling to find out how difficult his challenge was, made a series of ads to strengthen his image, held massive rallies and made the biggest recorded get out the vote campaign in history. In the 2nd quarter of the year he had alternating billboard, newspaper, radio and television. To conclude the month of June he held a diner for the common man, the poorer attendees paid only $1, while the wealthier social activists and union leaders paid upward of $10,000. Bukharin did break his budget, but the dinner was able to cover the deficit and then some. In an amazing rally, the two candidates are tied at 45%. The Margin of Error is 1-3% (Thanks to polling investment from Bukharin).
Gubernatorial Races
Southerland
In the province of Southerland, a new political force has appeared out of nowhere and has taken the region by storm. After giving an electrifying speech in the city of Canton, broadcast statewide, he was offered an Op-ed in the Independence Chronicle, which he accepted. He doubled his momentum with the editorial and with a speech given at the state capital, with the governor in attendance. Who is this seemingly unstoppable political force? His name is Emmanuel Valentine; he is a young and charismatic political author and intellectual, his campaign motto is We fought for freedom with the bullet, let us protect it with the ballot. His sparkling image of a strong and youthful family man wooed the people, tired of the old political dynasty in power (a dynasty that was started with a royal appointment). The moderate governor, Howard Walker, responded with the argument that his opponent was too radical and too young to lead a great province like Southerland, but besides a few liberals and Independence insiders, his charges held little water. The governor is currently traveling the countryside to raise support. Meanwhile Valentine conducted barnstorming throughout the countryside, ran an ad campaign highlighting his values and morals. He also had several high level meetings with the Catholic bishop of Southerland and senate candidate General Conrad Olsen, and publicized the meetings in all of the local newspapers. He has challenge Walker to a debate, the governor accepted.
Recent polls look like this Walker 33%, Valentine 41% and 24% undecided (Margin of error 3-7%).

International News
With the liberation of the United Republic from Anglian Empire, virtually every region on Earth questioned its own situation. In Latin Unitaria, many native and mixed peoples, led by wealthy plantation and factory owners began revolting in almost every major city. They want freedom from their Snapi and Tropiguese masters, after 500 years of tyrannical rule.

Even within the Great Powers of Encennia, the revolution had a great affect, although in the Anglian war conscription riots have ended, anger at the Monarchy still remains, along with calls to give the people more say in the parliament. In the Absolute (albeit, enlightened) monarchy of Francisca, the seeds of revolution have been spread for the first time since 1793 in the failed revolution. In the Allamany and Alitalia confederations, nationalism has taken root, and they have begun to consolidate power in their central governments.

In the Far East the Napaj Empire continues to expand onto the mainland, but most experts say expansion has reached its maximum, as it quickly approaches the territories of the Great Powers. On the mainland regions of Icha and Orea nationalists, democrats and Marxists are conspiring to expel the invaders.

The Council of Foreign Relations Analysis
With the loss of it greatest colony and achievement, the Anglian Empire has fallen to third in the Industrial race, behind the United Republic and Allamany. It has also lost the agricultural race, now dominated by Francisca and the Unitarian Republic. Global Debt has reached unprecedented levels, estimated at 78% of Gross World Product, and the citizenry of this Earth are not happy about it, meanwhile Industrialists and Financiers are laughing all the way to the bank. In the Far East and Encennia, a revolution is on its way for almost certain. The Aroman Empire in the Middle East has consolidated its power and has begun to expand in Persia and Arabia, funded by huge oil profits. By the end of the year, the global political landscape will have changed forever.
Economic Outlook
The stock market has seemed to hit bottom with the news of a pro- industry and pro-agriculture administration on its way, but unemployment rose as industrial demand evaporated. The housing Market remains a sellers market, as an influx of immigrants join the new nation looking for housing, but some are hopefully because many loyalists are leaving for the Northern Anglian Province, selling for any price possible. Many believe that General Mason is making empty provinces, and have decided to hold their dollars until after the election.
