This Civilization IV mod places a number of Civilizations in a fairy tale world; a world with evil sorcerors, mighty trolls, noble and manly knights, nimble woodelves and hot babes in distress. Original? Bah! This ain't original in any way. No-no. Instead Fairy Tale shamelessly makes use of all common and well-known fantasy and fairy tale clichés to create a pot of humour, excitement and of course pure good old Civilization nationbuilding. This mod does not claim to be original or impressive, nor does it claim to be Fall from Heaven. It does claim to be fun and exciting.

* 22 very different Fairy Tale nations; all with their own different style and theme. Everything from dark nations of demons and trolls to civilizations of the undead where the warriors are skeletons to hot-babe valkyrie matriarchies to nations of proud knights with fluttering banners and shining armour. All civs demand different playstyles and approaches, and all come complete with own flags and symbols, leaders as well as national history and style.

* Masses of new units and buildings with fantasy and fairy tale themes, where some of the units were tailored and made specifically for this mod. Build your Royal Family by deploying the King, the Queen and the Princess and watch them do their duty on the battlefield. Each nation also has a special national hero; like the Count, the Huntress, the Underworld Lord and so on, heroes that can travel the world and find adventure. Deploy massive formations of shining, noble knights or charge into battle with the impregnable legions of evil demonic infantry.

* All Fairy Tale and Fantasy clichés are catered for. Deploy strong dragons to bring fast terror deep behind enemy lines, create a wave of Wolfpacks and unleash them on your unsuspecting rivals, preying on soft targets like settlers and workers without your rival ever knowing who sent the menace, or have witches explore enemy territory and investigate and sabotage their cities and improvements. Create Magicians to unleash their spells of destruction on enemy fortifications and city walls.

* Fairy Tale and Fantasy type buildings and World Wonders are in place. Erect the Fairy Tale Palace, Forest King's castle or Dome of Prophecy, build the Purple Tower to unite the land under your Imperial rule. All buildings in true fantasy style and design and all nationns have several unique buildings; like the specific Elven Granary and Library and the Collective Hives and Warfactories and the Viking Valkyrie Academy.

* Play on the great 125x100 detailed map of the Fairy Tale world with 18 civs or play one of the smaller scenarios. You can also play randomly generated maps through some of the map scripts supplied with this mod; PlanetGenerator for instance, which creates a really interesting world with masses of creation process choices! Also included are maps of Tamriel from the Elder Scrolls Series as well as a map of Tolkien's Middle Earth, making those two fantasy lands playable with the Fairy Tale civs!

* The monumental Imperial War Scenario will let you play the noble Empire as it strives to save the civilized world from the destruction of evil the Demon King himself wants to impose on it, or you can take the other side and lead the Legions of Darkness to world conquest and once and for all destroy Civilization with fire and iron.

* Unique Fairy Tale music composed by Zero-Project. To set the stage, all National anthems are suitably taken from some of the greatest composers of the 19th century; like Sibelius, Chopin, Tchaikovsky and Wagner.

* Merged with BUG, giving the player more control over what is happening in the Fairy Tale Kingdom in better report screens and cool graphical functions. The mod is also merged with Better BtS AI, making the AI-led opponent Kingdoms more of a challenge. Now they actually think!

INSTALLATION AND PLAYING

Fairy Tale is a mod for Civilization IV; Beyond the Sword 3.19.

To install, simply put the Fairy Tale folder in your Beyond the Sword Mod folder. The correct path for the installed folder should be C:/ProgramFiles/2KGames/FiraxisGames/CivilizationIV/BeyondTheSword/Mods.

To play the mod, start up Civilization as usual, and from the main menu choose "Advanced". Then choose "Load a Mod" and select "Fairy Tale" from the menu. The game then restarts, and when it has done so, select "Single Player Game". There are then three options on how to play the game.

1. The Scenario Version. Choose "Play a Scenario" in the menu. Pick any of the scenarios listed. All the pre-made scenarios for Fairy Tale describe a certain historical period in the Fairy Tale Lore or just highlight one of the mod's civilizations. The scenario "The World of Fairy Tale" puts all civs on a huge map of The Known World, which is the Fairy Tale land. You play as any of the nations and begin at the first settlement! The scenario "The Collective War" supplies a smaller map and you play as one of the contenders in the Great War between the Collective and the Free World. That map is perhaps best to start with.

2. Further Scenario Options. There are two other maps available in the Scenario Menu as well; Tolkien's Middle Earth and Tamriel from the Elder Scrolls. I added those for the fun of it and edited the starting positions on the maps to, in a way, align my civilizations to those two excellent fantasy worlds. The result wasn't quite proper in alignment between my world and the two others, but should indeed pose two interesting ways of play.

3. The Campaign Version begins a Fantasy-type game on a random map and takes you from the beginning of time, forward to the time when The Dowager Queen invaded the Free Lands. The map Script "Planet Generator 0.68" (found in the left-hand menu) is highly recommended for the campaign games, but other map scripts have been included as well. For an example, "Creation", which was used in FfH2, and creates a true Fantasy World. You can choose to play any one of the nations in Fairy Tale. Note that Planet Generator comes with a lot of choices for world creation!

Credits

I take pride in giving due credit where such is needed. The following work has been used in creating this mod. I sincerely hope I haven't forgotten anyone, or gotten anything of the following wrong, because that would make me feel really ashamed, since all of this (mostly artwork) is worth all credit in the world. Please excuse me in case anything is wrong here, and do tell me. Furthermore, I do try to use work from all the most prolific artists on the CivFanatics download page, since all of them make stuff that suits me and this mod. Some artists have become favourites of mine though. Special mention goes out to Danrell who produces large amounts of high-quality medieval units, SeZereth for his excellent Ogres and Trolls as well as other great medieval units. I also want to mention SaibotLieh who has female units as a trade. His hot ladies are most appreciated and this mod would be nothing without all the hot ladies, eh. Just check out the Norse Valkyries. He also made the Princess look fairy tale just because of my wishes. Zerver also does some really good stuff. But to all the artists generally - thanks for sharing, and keep it up.

Bernie14 made an excellent Norman Swordsman(http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=5784), and the Light Cavalry was made by Ajidica (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=10956). The Viking Warchief hero unit was created by SeZereth (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=3680).

Just for the fun of it. Thanks to Topsecret for the idea of ranged bombardment for land units! The mod has The_J's Spawn a Civ modcomp (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=13487). The Crystal resource was supplied by Walter Hawkwood (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=12120).

Fairy Tale uses the terrain graphics from Chuggi's Better Graphics by Chugginator(http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=293656).

The Leader Portraits were made using the Computer Game Oblivion (and some Morrowind too!). I got tired of searching for copyright-free Fantasy art online, as there is none, and resorted to taking screenshots of characters I've played or created in Oblivion instead. The leader of Clan Crystallin, Socuzia, was actually the lady I beat Oblivion's Main Quest together with. Now she lives again. I got art that suited me far better than that :):):):) they demand money for online, and I see my Oblivion-pics as a small tribute as well to Bethesda's great Elder Scrolls series, which I have been following since Daggerfall.

The Fairy Tale music was composed by Zero-Project (http://www.zero-project.gr/). Watch the YouTube video also (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mcJjTWHWbo)! Can't you see that's Principality knights charging a mass formation of Namyri? The Diplomusic was compsed by various 19th century great composers. Sibelius, Tchaikovsky, Wagner, Chopin and Grieg.

Special Thanks

Le Sage's Special thanks go to Jennvare, Ajidica, VeBear, Krchak and Ono-Neko. Super special thanks, of course, to my modding buddy HighwayHoss, who keeps up a really good job with his HEFT updates of Fairy Tale and have made this a much more pleasant modding experience, thanks also to Zero-Project for his music. This mod would be nothing without you guys. Special thanks also to the nice guys and gals on the CivFanatics forums who have been most helpful. Notably EmperorFool and Phungus who patiently helped me with Python, SaibotLieh and The_J who have helped me on several occasions. Thanks also to all else within the lively and friendly Civ4 modding community and I hope I haven't forgotten anyone.

Thanks to Sid Meier, Firaxis and 2K for the best computer game in World History. Thanks to Bethesda for the best RPG's in World History, the Elder Scrolls games. Thanks to the CivFanatics, ModDB and StrategyInformer webites. A Mega Thanks to all the thousands who have downloaded and played this mod.

Last, but not least. Thanks to my Sweetie. She gets to listen to stories about troll squadrons, elves and viking warlords all day, and although she doesn't understand half of it, she lets me nerd on with this sort of stuff.

First Post! :woohoo:

Congrats with own subforum :goodjob:

You may want to add to your first post all the maps and patches that you've done so far. Going through the original thread, I am not sure which ones I should have and which ones are no longer needed.

VeBear. Congrats yourself on the first post! I will add a Civilizations idea thread, as you mentioned. It might be good to get many different points of views on new possible civs.

Jennvare. I will do that. I will make a clear statement under the Header "Download" on what version of the mod is the lates and what patches there are.

Right now there's only V9 plus Update 9c. Oh and there are some Map Collections too.

Congratulations from me, too! :)

It's always good to know that some of my girls have this wonderful second home.

Thank you, SaibotLieh. Yeah! Your gals do come to good use and their full right over here as we treat them kindly and with the respect they deserve too! :)

Update 9d

Here's a small update for you. If you're not experiencing any sorts of problems with the mod, then you won't need this. But if you have CtD's, especially in the early game, then install this one. It will be part of the next major update of the mod as well.

Download
Installation

You need the previous Full Install of Fairy Tale Version 9 AND the previous update 9c for this to work. Move the Fairy Tale folder found within the .zip to your Mods folder in BtS. Overwrite where asked. This update has been tested on several systems to be working OK (Win 7 and Vista).

The Manual with complete Version History can be read by opening the Manual.html file in the Fairy Tale folder.

Le Sage and HighwayHoss, Aug 2010

Erm, I am missing the The World of Fairy Tale scenario. Any places where I can get it?

I enclose the huge Fairy Tale World Map with this post. I have been renaming the scenarios a bit over the past weeks in preparation for Version 10 of the mod.

You can also find some smaller World of Fairy Tale maps on the Playtesting Thread. There are some updates still to be done to these maps, but they're playable and rather exciting too.

Hey. Sorry all hundreds of thousands of fans for me being a bit distant at the moment. I am working currently on two important things. First, I am putting together Version 10 of Fairy Tale, and I want it to be perfect, so it might take a little while. Second, in my spare time, I am making a village for Oblivion, a mod I started exactly a year ago, but never finished. I need to get that mod out asap too...

that is okay. And it it better that you use time for a perfect v10 than not using and get a half finished one ;)

I am still lurking here also...so you havent been forgotten. Keep up the good work and we'll see how your Oblivion Village mod works out as well.

I released the Oblivion village mod a couple of days ago. It turned out really well. It's a small farming village below the Jerall Mountains, secluded and isolated and under Goblin attack. I made a real effort in planning the daily routines of the AI and all the inhabitants have detailed patterns. Yeah, it was fun. Take a look here, if you want to see Runestone Village.

Now, back to Civ again. I am doing the final touches upon V10 now and will now be merging in the New Angleeye kingdom... I hope to have the update ready this week!

(Does anyone recognize the Village Drunk?)

Hey everybody; just letting you know while Le Sage is working on FT V10 I've been playing a new game I just got: Elemental War of Magic (Click for official game site). It's a turn based sandbox style fantasy strategy game with a lot of Civ elements like exploration, city building, tech research etc. combined with elements of fantasy RPGs like quests, monsters magic etc. The game is very moddable with the ability to create units, leaders, maps quests and even new factions. I just downloaded V1.08 and am currently playing the beginner campaign to learn the system. I am hoping when I get comfortable with it to do my own FT style mod for the game. I highly suggest getting it.

I think that game looks really interesting and I will without a doubt try it out, but I won't have time to indulge myself in it as yet, since I have Civilization 5 coming in exactly a week's time. the moddability in Elemental looks really good too; no fiddling with XML and Python, I bet, but I hope you can go deeper into the game system if you require as well.

How's the modding community for Elemental?
