Throne Room

Does anyone know if there will be a throne room in civ3, and if you do, some screen shots if you have them?

My understanding was that the throne room was out and the CIV 1 palace was back in.

Here's a link to what I'm guessing is a palace-in-progress
screen shot .

As an architect I shudder in horror at the sight of this picture. This is the crappiest palace that I have ever seen. A mix of different periods in time is OK and believable, but why try to blend all possible architectural styles from all over the globe? It only results in a laughable mix without even a hint of good taste. Bring back the throne room, or at least make sure that the palace option can be turned off.

HMm, at first look of this photo I thought it was a shot of some twisted wonder.

Absolutely agree... Is one of the most "horrenduos" creations I have ever seen. You are architect, I am Art History teacher...Lets see: Egyptian, Greek, Mayan, Japanese, Gothic style, Mycenean... All mixed without proportions or escales... Are you not sure that is any kind of skooky house or torture chamber? Oh... my headache is back

I agree that the first palace screen shot may not be the Taj Mahal but I suppose we must keep in mind that the palaces are works in progress and develop through time. The palace of Civ 1 and the throne room of Civ 2 were different styles/upgrades of architecture, and reflected a movement through time. I don't think they gave Gamespot the screenshot with intention of handing it over to the scrutiny of Architectual Digest. This is probably a compilation of palace improvments over a span of time. While this isn't as drastic, did anyone improve the walls in the throne room in Civ 2 but leave the throne just for kicks? So you end up with this beaitful room ready to entertain the worlds delegates and you've got a boulder for a throne.

I have a guess of what could be happening. I think that whenever you get a chance to improve your palace, you have to choose which part of the palace, and which style. So you can choose to create a horrible mix of styles palace, or choose coherently to build a nice palace from a certain style.

Agree? Disagree?

You are correct.

Just like Civ 1's palace option!
just with better graphics and more options
I think I can safley say some people here did not play civ 1 or was not familier with Civ 1's palace.

I am happy that the Civ 1 palace will be retuning. I liked it better than the Civ 2 throne room myself.

yes, i thought as much....im happy with the palace option, i thought this was a great quirk in civ 1 and let me vent my artistic talent

well done firaxis

Why not both? maybe an open door that reveals the throne room. I've always liked the bear rug and the throne itself.

i don't know, i think they should try another idea like citizens will build monuments for you instead of you choosing improvements.?

The palace is horrible. The throne-room was nice.

Except for decorative purposes, the palace and throne-room didn't serve much. I have always wondered, why wasn't diplomacy conducted in the throne-room in Civ2? You enter other nation's throne-room, see the ruler, their level of development, depending on the nation's martial status, there'll be guards - this way the throne-room could also serve information on whom you're dealing with to help make the right political decisions. Sure, there was this Embassy info box, but it was soulless.

Again, for me, it was a great idea wasted.

Thats quite a good idea actually, sorta like the throne room in shogun:total war where the diplomat comes in through the doors to conduct business. you could also try and fool other players (human) by putting lots of cool looking things like bear skin rugs etc and hope they dont notice you dont have any windows and statues..
and i agree, it would look better than the 'souless' negotiation window...shame its a bit late to change now though

Yea they missed that Idea but they should at least make your palace in the city view LOOK like the palace you build!
In civ one I thought that was how it was going to be.
I was going in to my city view and saying WAIT THAT AIN'T MY PALACE IT LOOKS LIKE click........click THIS!

I loved the "blue" theme of the throne room...I mean the second last choice in each improvement...Usually I would even turn off the throne room once I reached it!! (Arn't I a lamer)

It occurs to me that everyone has different tastes and obviously Civ 3 can not accommodate everyone. But I think the idea of making the palace more integral to the gameplay is a great one!

The throne room has a certain degree of "integrity"... Any part that you developed was in consonance with the rest. I always developed one part til the end (f.ex. started witht he carpet til it was completed, then following with the floor... etc).
I must admitt I didn't play Civ I but that does not makes any difference. I am not against the plalace idea, but the way they mixed up the parts. May be the have choosen the most horrible combination. I just hope so!
