There should be a new poll made for this topic. I believe these poll results go back to very early on when many of the civs had different uniques (i.e. China's great general bonus was larger than it is now and their UB came with the great scientist specialist that made libraries the go-to early build.) Also, many of the newer civilizations are not included.

As a side note, I also laughed at Arachnofiend's Carthage comment. XD

I picked Rome, because I like to build, and they have adequate means of conquering enough territory early on to get a decent empire and and getting it up and running.

I have to say I'm new but so far I really enjoy Japan, I like a fast expanding empire and there are probably other civs that are better that I haven't discovered, however I love the Samurai, they give you such a dominant force at that time. Plus Bushido is incredibly useful for taking cities. Any one have any experience with the Celts? I'm Irish and tend to lean towards them.

Oh, even for ICS I wouldn't go with france. there are numberous other civ that's better at ICS than france, including China. Not to mention france probably is the only civ with a UA which EXPIRE! I AM however curious how come Siam is not high up among the polls. Their UA is simply amazing regardless of what type of victory they are going.

France's UA expiring doesn't matter by the time you discover steam power. With France's UA you'll be on your 4th or 5th policy by the time your opponents get there third... Coupled with the right policies and right religious choices, I get to 150+ culture/turn by turn 100 . I have NEVER lost a game when going for a culture victory with France. When my cousin and fiance play on my team Vs others, we take Siam, France and Korea and dominate every time, and have yet to lose. The expiration means NOTHING by the time you research Steam.

For me it would be Alexander/Greece.

Weather you go Diplomatic or Conquest; City-State support is just very beneficial.

And depending on the map layout; City-States can serve as walls.

On Diplomatic Victory of course you get every vote of City-States.

No love for India??
Every city with over 4 citizens gets more happiness from Ghandi's UA. When one hits cities at 15-20-25 the bonus is just overpowered.
With India I can normally go two levels up, compared to all others.

Mines Venice. I love all that money and I don't really like to expand, and I'm not aggressive, either. So out of all the peaceful civs, Venice is my favorite

No tempo -> no snowballing or just _dead_ early.

I voted Greece, because if you pick up Patronage, your dominance of CSs is unmatched. Although Egypt is a close runner-up because you can REX with Burial Tombs very effectively.

As a necroed thread, it's really showing its age. I mean, China's actually leading in votes for some reason.

I know it's a strong civ, but come on, the best?

The logistics fail doesn't make China the best because the cho ko nu already has the may attack twice promotion which is like logistics, which allows an additional attack. If you combine the 2 promotions, chu ko nu should have a total of 3 attacks per turn. Unfortunately, that's not the case. The case is that chu ko nu don't need logistics.

First Post*******

I don't know if you guys know this but Germany is great against Barbarians. If I ever set up a game with raging barbarians I always play as Germany. Germany has a 50% chance of gaining a barbarian unit and 25 gold after taking an encampment. That means that (a. You can build a bigger army @ half the price, (b. you have an extra unit to defeat the barbarians you haven't destroyed near the encampment and (c. Although they may not be completely upgraded when they join you that means that they are good for expendability i.e wearing down a barbarian gatling gun with newly aquired archer and not having to damage your more valuable crossbowman.

I always team up with Japan because there army is kick ass.

Hail Mighty Bismark

America. Late game powerhouse, will utterly wreck havoc no matter what you do.

The cultural bonus of Napoleon makes him a very tempting leader, at the early stages of the game.

best civ now is easily Babylon from my opinion. out of all of those civs now, and which ones transitioned the best, I voted for Arabia.
