Release Date?

I wonder what percentage of the player base buys their games in hard copy, and if they do (like I did for Vanilla), how many of them actually go out and buy it rather than ordering online and getting it delivered.

Good argument, but the retailers would be totally against a release at a holiday, so it's rather not likely.

I think it's still a fairly high amount. In my local game store, the day of release had dozens if not more out on the shelves, and they were moving. After a week, the shelves had been refilled.

Placement is everything; put them in the 'Top Ten' shelf, and casuals just walking by looking for something new will pick them up as well as the odd strategy game fan who has a download limit and/or no Amazon account.

What holiday on which retail stores are closed is celebrated by 80 countries on May 1st?

And since when are holidays a bad target for retail releases? There are tons of holidays in the US at least that are considered "retail holidays" that boast huge sales every year.

It's the communist worker's day. If I remember correctly, communists are so fanatic about the date that Stalin ordered Berlin to be captured on or before May 1, 1945, so they could celebrate that day with the victory over their worst enemy (funny, as I never saw the difference between stalinism and nazism).

I have no idea why the communist worker's day became the "international" worker's day in so many countries... here in NA, we celebrate in September... what would that be? The "free workers" day?

It's the communist worker's day.
Offtopic:
I think you're confusing socialist with communist :p

(although they celebrate it in (former) communist countries, of course. And I believe your story about Stalin is correct, I've heard the same thing).

It's exactly the same as the september 1st holiday in the US. It was introduced after someone witnessed the may 1st holiday in communist (;)) Canada.

"The September date originally chosen by the CLU of New York and observed by many of the nation's trade unions for the past several years was selected rather than the more widespread International Workers' Day because Cleveland was concerned that observance of the latter would be associated with the nascent Communist, Syndicalist and Anarchist movements that, though distinct from one another, had rallied to commemorate the Haymarket Affair in International Workers' Day."

Apparently the Haymarket Affair was a riot in 1886 in Chicago.
Oh, Chicago, you cesspit of socialism. With your socialist riots and your socialist presidents :p

And to go back ontopic:
I still think it'll be the 25th of may :)

I prefer to buy a hardcopy but in this case I won't bother. Mostly because the Manual is the big incentive to have a hard copy, and the game has changed so much between patches that the manual no longer applies...

So no, just a download of GK from Steam on release, and I will be happy.

I'm curios to know, if we pre-order from Steam, will it be permitted to pre-load? I find it hard to imagine how exactly this will work. I never had a game with an EP. and if we pre-load, will we be able to actually Play Vanilla game (because it will install in the same folder I presume, or in sepreate folder, but then will God and Kings be listed sepereately in the Library?)

Preload usually installs about 99% so yeah, in theory it should be doable and possible to still play vanilla during this time.

The largest markets for the game would be unaffected if the game released on May 1st. In the very least Steam could still be used as an initial distribution, with physical copies to follow.

...er...a short look at the list:
  • China
  • Germany
  • Spain
  • Portugal
  • Italy
  • Sweden
  • Nearly half of Southern America

That's probably not more than 50% of the market (so your statement is right), but sure considerable enough.

I think folks are forgetting the fact that most games made in the USA are released in the USA days if not weeks before they're released to the rest of the world. It was already pointed out that USA release dates are typically on a Tuesday and overseas release dates are typically on a Friday. Therefore, those countries that celebrate my birthday as a national holiday wouldn't be affected by a May 1st release in the USA as their release date would likely be May 4th if it's only days later or May 25th if it's weeks later as both those dates are on a Friday.

@True Candyman

"Well i'm sure in the UK Game would have a lot of pull in such negotiations..."

Unlikely unless someone buys them out of Administration

"It won't be long until retailers are irrelevant"

It's already happened for High street game shops - next will be physical media because as volumes drop with downloads taking over, the cost will rise. Who buys physical music anymore?

"but for now they are so it won't be released on a holiday."

I needs to be released before a holiday so that we get time to enjoy it

The thing I hate about release dates through Steam is I can't activate until midnight GMT, so my copy of the game that arrives at 8 AM has to be a paperweight for 5 hours

How do you get the game before it's been released?

How do you get the game before it's been released?

Well, I know that if you pre-order via Steam (but no physical copy) they tend to allow you pre-load the game, install it, but can't play until the game is officialy released. I had that with Portal 2.

How do you get the game before it's been released?

I don't. I live in New Zealand, so we're in the GMT +12 Time Zone. On the release day (September 24 for Vanilla) I get the game delivered to my door by 8AM, but Steam doesn't allow the game to be activated (And thus played) until the time when it is also the release date in England (GMT). So I have to wait four/five hours before I can play it
