No DRM? That isn't going to happen. Select one.

GOO in that case.

Or a simple serial-key check like what Mount and Blade uses.

Why 2k chose Steam: It can handle DRM, Anti-cheat, Multiplayer, Achievements, Friends Lists, DRM, Patch Distrubution, Cloud Saves, and more. All at once.

Having it scratched?

Well, if we don't use Steam, who will handle the Anti-cheat, Multiplayer, Achievements, Friends Lists, DRM, Patch Distrubution, Cloud Saves, et cetera?

Well, the honest answer? Nobody for all I care. Everything you mentioned is absolute fluff except for the patching (which, before steam, we SOMEHOW were able to manage) and the DRM.

You may not be interested in multiplayer, but many of us like MP games.

Well, how was it done before Civilizations V?

So, why exactly do we need Steam?

Because Gamespy was Hitler incarnate.

So, why exactly do we need Steam?
Because gamespy is a terrible, terrible system. Not to mention all the other social features that steam provides (You may not need/want them, but others do, and they help drive sales). The entire free aspect of steam is also pretty attractive when compared to having to develop/implement your own system.

Yeah, some want Steam, some don't. Some want those options, others don't...

But I agree, GameSpy is terrible. But there are other such things.

Steam is like the Macintosh of the gaming world.
