In my humble opinion, I find that the lack of economic victory in BNW is unfortunate, especially since the game focuses on trade between nations. These are some of my humble suggestions which I hope can further augment the game's relevance to the modern world.

1. MNCs: Different industries with different multi-national corporations vying for the market shares. As such, social policies can also influence corporations, with freedom promoting free market and innovation, order promoting central control and economy of scale, and autocracy promoting oligarchy and protectionism.

2. Overhauled Trading System: Creating an organization modelling WTO, which helps promote international trade among its members. Its antithesis will be trade blocs and cartels, especially for essential rare resources such oil and uranium, so they can corner the market. Civs can build wonders such as the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, which allow Civs to control the global commodities market.

3. Trade War and Alliances: Allow establishment of trade alliances such as trade blocs, monetary or even fiscal unions, where Civs can consolidate their economic power to wage war with one another. Tools of waging trade war, are as such; quota of import, trade tariffs, granting subsidies to bloc members, currency devaluation, restrictions and downright embargo.

4. World Banking System: Allows Civs to borrow by tapping on the IMF credit facility or issue bonds through their sovereign central bank, with conditions attached. Civs are to abide to certain conditions and failure to honour means being imposed austerity, sanctions, national assets auctioned off at fire-sale or the Civ declared being insolvent.

5. Stock Exchange: Allows corporations to get listed, so other Civs can invest to tap on the combined gold, science and productivity resources. Civs should also have a sovereign wealth fund which they can use to buy into other Civ's corporations, hence exerting soft power cultural influences on their country. Citizens can also be whipped up into a state of nationalistic frenzy and nationalize listed corporations, with the possible consequence of sanctions and/or war.

6. Economic Boom Bust Cycle: Enables the economy cycles and its adjusting tools, such as interest rate, monetary policy, income equality, reserves requirement and tax policy. If a Civ opts to grow organically, they might lack behind Civs which opted to borrow to grow. Then if the Civ which borrowed to grow is too lax, the bubble might burst and they will face trouble repaying the IMF. Set the policies too tight, economy growth will stagnant and gold generation might suffer. Watch your people revolt when unemployment, currency and inflation go out of control.

7. Exploitation of the developing world and an isolationist stance: Civs which are more economically developed should be able to exploit its developing Civs and City States, such as shifting its heavy polluting industries to within their borders, while they reap majority of the profits. Allow Civs to adopt a policy of isolation and self-reliance in self defence, instead of the usual Freedom, Order and Autocracy, to avoid repression, while running the risk of becoming a rouge state. However, rouge states can still gang up to threaten the existing world order through clandestine military activities.

8. Promote Economic Development: Through fair and unfair means. Civs can set up Special Economic Zones to woo corporations, so they can steal their technology and techniques. Civs can also promote growth by building infrastructure, buildings and improvements. With more well-off people and affluent corporations, Civs enjoy more culture and soft power, which can help influence other Civs, contributing to an eventual economic or cultural victory.

My 8 points to share.

good ideas, but the mechanics are too different to implement in civ 5...maybe in civ 6, but then what are the chances of developers actually read your post?

at least right now we have a 'gold' victory, which is buying city states to vote for world keader.
