War by Accident?

It happened to me several times, that the KI started a war by accident both in unmodded and modded game.

The KI just tries to move its units throught an field, occupied by someones else units (mostly mine!).

Most of the time it seems to be caused by terrain, set to be unpassable by wheeled units. But sometimes they even do not have that excuse.

Recent examples are:

- a egyptian War Chariot and a Settler tried to overrun my Spearman and Settler at a mountain pass. Even the eqyptian Settler makes a futile attack (this happens in an unmodded game).

- a hittitie convoy of Galleons and Coastal Ironclads moved right throught one of my Frigates at a sea tile. Coastal Ironclads can only move on coastal and sea tiles, but not into the ocean.

We were allied in a war against Hannibal (after that I quickly made peace with Carthago and formed an alliance against Mursilis the Mad).

- On its way to a free island for colonization an english convoy of Armored Cruisers and Clippers run right into my moving Home Fleet. There are absolut no excuses for Elisabeth, as this happened in the middle of an ocean and there was plenty of space to all sites.

Most of the time, this accidents happened at the most inopportune moment.

Did this happened to you too?

From post 370 of the CCM Preview Thread:

This is the situation Moosezilla (who is one of the CCM-prebetatesters) reported some posts above and proved it with a save-file. I made the screenshots from the save-file when the same action (as always) happened again:

In CCM mountains, volcanoes and marshes are not allowed for landunits with the wheeled flag. Most landunits in CCM have the wheeled flag. So the Japanese Asiatic chariot has the wheeled flag, the Japanese settler and the Russian missionary on top of the mountain don´t have the wheeled-flag.

The Russian missionary of the human player finished its turn on the mountain. In the neighbouring tile there are the Japanese chariot and the Japanese settler. This should be an ideal position for an attack of the Russian missionary, as the chariot can´t move on the mountain and the settler can´t attack another unit.

But what happened? The chariot, that escorts the settler and shouldn´t be able to enter the mountain (that has no road on it), attacked the Russian missionary located on the mountain and killed that unit. The result was made visible for the screenshot by another Russian missionary nearby. After that attack both Japanese units keep standing before the mountain until the end of time.

The conflict of units with the wheeled-flag and escorted units without such a flag caused a lot of freezes in CCM (I made a report about such a situation with ships many posts earlier). That this conflict even leads to a situation, that an escorting unit attacks on a terrain, that it shouldn´t be allowed to enter, was something new for me. :)

- End of post 370 -

It costed me a lot of time to "iron these bugs out" of CCM.

Hi Civinator,

the egyptian War Chariot in my first example was basically behaving according to the rules. My Settler-Spearman-pair was standing on a hill between two mountains (a mountain pass ;) ). But instead of waiting until the pass is free, they just tried to move throught my units.

Today Julius Caesar has started a war by accident in my current game. I know that the use of invisible submarines is bugged, but Julius managed to run over my Submarine with an invasion fleet including a Destroyer, which is able to see Submarines. :wallbash:

And no, the invasion was heading to England, wich is at war with everyone.

And again! :mischief:

This picture is cut together to illustrate Gilgamesh´s stupidity.

I am about half an age more advanced (They have Steampower and Nationalism).

Bireme and Galley are ancient Warships and unable to cross the ocean. The Mediterran Galley is a flavour version of the Caravel and would have evaded into the ocean if travelling alone or with more advanced escorts.

In the interturn they tried to move right throught my Main Battlefleet (and caused light damage to the Dreadnought HMS Thunderer).

In Namp´o I have four Pirate Frigates laying in ambush, in order to prevent the Sumerian invasion attempts before they can begin. That was at least my intention...

EDIT: I managed to plant a spy into the Sumerian Capital. They have once again an amazing mix of antique and modern units. Their navy covers all ages from Bireme (Mathematics), Galley (Map Making), War Galley (Astronomy), Frigate (Magnetism) and Ironclad (Steampower).

Why upgrade a perfectly antiquated unit? :spear:

I had in my current game a very unusual war by accident.

I was moving one of my Privateers close to my coast to a rendevous, then it was attacked by several german Ju88 Bombers (I had hoped, that the Privateer would be still out of their range).

To my surprise I received the "Germany declare war on us!" message shortly before the bombers attack. Then the attack run started and two of the bombers were promptly intercepted and shot down by two of my Yak-9 Fighters.

I checked with the other civs and I seems, that I have not taken a hit to my trade reputatition. So it seems the game counted the german airraid as casus belli and not my interception.

Fortunatly the Privateer was on its way to meet a Submarine to lure Germany into a war by using the submarine bug. It only went off early and without the Submarine. ;)

And again.

This time Theodora was appearently too drunk to guide her forces. :shifty:

It started as "normal" aggressive negotiations, then Babylon tried to invade the german province of Sumer by attacking Kish.

I quickly bribed the Byzantines (in the east) into an alliance with oil and ivory.

And then the trouble begun.

Theodora landed (and amazingly withdraw) her troops next to Sumer three times.

So I blocked her landing place with a Panther Tank.

As result the byzantine fleet sailed past Sumer and tried to sail through the freshly conquered Akkad.

All five ships (two Dreadnoughts, one Armored Cruiser, one Destroyer Escort and one Clipper) were effortless sunk by my surprised defenders (as allways when naval units attack cities by accident).

Now the tables are turned: I have quickly made peace with Babylon and forged an alliance against the drunk Byzantines. :smoke:
