Anyone have ideas about how such a sudden drop could occur?

The only thing that has happened in the past ten turns is:

1) Arabia (who I am friends with) lost his capital--but he's still in the game.

2) I didn't complete one of my allied CS's quests.

I was at 302 culture per turn in 1810, and after those two things happend (around 1820), my culture dropped to 252 per turn.

I'd have to go back and replay the last ten turns, if that would help, but only those two things happened. And they were in within 2 turns of each other.

Am playing Prince, no mods, and as Ethiopia.

A Golden Age ended...???....You lost the "Friendship" of some CS's??? ...The automatic "city manager" redeployed some workers/specialists???

^^I kept playing and it appears I was an ally of Monaco (news to me--it must have been my culture they were in awe of), and we are now friends. After 2 turns I am up to 263.

Yes--Golden Age did end, I forgot about that. I didn't know that affected culture.

So basically a lot of things can cause this?

I'm guessing so because in the past five turns I've gone from 263 down to 259, then back up to 263.

I really liked the 302 I was getting as I am trying for a culture victory.

UPDATE--apologies to posting two times in a row.

I was down to 238 per turn as I needed more gold and changed two of my city's focuses. After I completed the Taj Mahal, my culture jumped from 238 to 290. Does that sound right? That's what happened, and I'm not complaining.

A question--is 290 culture good or bad when in the year 1875? I'm trying for a culture victory and I personally think it's decent, but am not sure.

I'm okay defensively-wise as I have the great wall, and am still keeping up tech-wise (though barely).

And I've got 5 RAs going. :)

Three social policies finished, and about half left of each in the other two. This the first time I've tried Ethiopia for culture victory.

Sounds right. Taj Mahal starts a golden age, so it makes sense for your culture to boost b/c you get a 20% culture boost in golden ages. Cultured city-states give more culture when allies than when friends (I believe it's 12 when allies and 3 when friends). Nothing trippy.

^^I wasn't aware of that--thanks. I guess I better enjoy my increase while the Golden Age lasts...

And I was probably in an extended Gold Age earlier when I first posted I had entered a Golden Age and used a Great Artist to extend it.

That probably explains the -50 drop.

Thanks :)

If you are going for a cultural victory, you should be getting a new policy every 10 turns or less. Look at the required :c5culture: for the next policy...divide that by 10...now compare the result to your current :c5culture: per turn. If you are higher you are in good shape...lower and you might need to optimize a bit better.

Yes...the rule of thumb seems to be about 10 turns per policy change...which can be damn hard to achieve...at least for me, earlier in the game...later in the game it's not too hard to do even better.

But the arithmetic is simple.... 5 policy categories X 6 policies per category x 10 plus 10 turns, or so, to build Utopia = a 310-turn Cultural Victory....

Any average above 10 turns per policy just stretches things out accordingly... I can't remember at the moment my lowest turn "Cultural Victory", but it was certainly well above 310 turns...maybe 380, or probably even a bit higher.... :)

The best way to earn loads of culture, depending on difficulty is.
- Making sure you build ALL of culture buildings
- If G&K is present, adopt a religion that boosts up your culture (i.e one of the Religious Building that gives +3 culture, adopting maybe a plantation pantheon, and adopting Hermitage +8 bonus)
- Staying small
- Having few landmarks, perferably in desert/tundra tiles.
- Having few puppets, since they also bring in the culture dough.

That does seem very hard to achieve. Yikes!

Oh...and I should have factored in the the "free" policies...Oracle and Sydney Opera House.....so now we are down to a 290-turn Cultural Victory.... and there is the 10% "boost" from Cristo Redentor and, if you go the Piety route, another 10%...

I guess I would have to play with some kind of formula to see if there is some time-oriented multiplier effect if you can get these things as early as possible... Intuitively I think there is...but my brain is hurting just thinking about it...;)

Maybe all it really does is lower your overall average...maybe there is no time thing...???

There's also the variable of how many turns you spend golden, which provides a major boost to your culture. I think culture vics are one of my most common vics, and playing on quick I can achieve them in about 280-300 turns out of 330.

Every 10 turns of Golden Age is two turns worth of CPT. Which is why Persia is a great civ for Culture. You can bypass Chichen Itza and build other stuff.

Last attempt of mine I got a victory on turn 212 as America. Was only on Prince though.
