TerraNES: The Civil Experiment

Update 10
Experience and Entropy
500 Years into the Bronze Age (2550-2500 B.C.)

The lessons of the first Experiment are ignored by some, and accepted by others. People are getting more used to being led to glorious victory to gloomy defeat, and are becoming more productive than ever before due to growing periods of prosperity and stability.

Yet, even now, nations fall apart, barbarians rally in the distance.

The second phase of the experiment-explosive agitation-is about to begin.

LEVEA
"What do I desire, Sirians? Merely to see you bend knee before Takarzi."
-Baragan-sar in response to the Sirian delegation

The boundaries between Levea and the Levant grew ever smaller until the spread of Kitabalism became established of Phoenicia, when the entire middle-eastern region is now called Levea. What once was the name for the land south of Ortun and north of Irud now names all from the Levantine Sea to the Levean, from the Semetic Desert to the Moserean Mountains.

The Sirian Empire was the newest victim to fall to the Hyakkite. The Union of Phoenicia also took advantage of Siria’s weakness to submit the oft-trouble some city of Damascus under their rule. Meanwhile, the Mosereans are developing new ideas and traderoutes thanks to the comparably mythically developed Etassites, and brought home both a windfall from the razing of Sirian villages, and a large chest of tribute from the Hyakkites to the Etassians. To the south, the Exaltations continued to squabble and build up their power, as Boukae relentlessly pushes its way into the heartland.

“This is where, a century ago, our forefathers held the Aramyans. And this is where, we today, MUST hold the Hyakkites! To battle!”-Kalarel-Sar of Siria

The Hyak army pushed forth once again against the Sirians on their fourth campaign. There was a plan to invade through the Tigris river to force battle or besiege Mosul. However, after fierce discussion a much better plan was instated- they will push up the Euphrates and cut off the desired provinces from Damascus, securing their flank when they attack Mosul. This will also ensure that they will have the most supplies, the most tactical opportunities and hopefully a better chance at catching the Sirian force in open battle. To aid them, money was sent to various Moserean tribes to raid Mosulian Siria.

And this was the nearly same plan which was used a century ago, at the highest tide of Aramya’s advance.

Northward they pushed, and northward the Sirians retreated until they reached the ancient fortifications. There they rallied and launched a counter attack. In the ensuing Battles of Tuttul, Laren managed to cut Sirian access to the bridge, giving Baragan-Sar the opening to crush first one half of the Sirian Army, then the other, using his new Qarabu Kalbanatu Axemen (similar to Katan Solarians he fought in his mercenary days) to slice open their lines. When they tried to fight their way back, the Hyakkite forces, unlike the Aramyan a century ago, managed to stay their ground and punished the returning forces. Turning the Sirian fortifications against them, they held out in Tuttul for reinforcements. (Hyak: -3 Spearmen (1 at 3.0) -1 Archer +1 Spearmen/Chariot XP)

With the Damascans cut off and busy with the Phoenician invasion, the Hyakkite army focused on Mosul. He hounded the retreating Sirians, who suffered defections and raids. Their half of the army, distracted by Morsean invasion, was crushed north of their walled city at the battle of Nibis, forcing the remnants to retreat to Mosul. There, the Lord Derroni declared that they will fight to the death. When the news of this reached the people in the besieged city, they rioted, and, when lead by Tarkazi agents sowed within their midst, marched into the palace themselves and deposed the King, surrendered to the Hyakkite Army, and accepted a new ruler from Alamhadat. (Hyak: +Urban ++Domestic +Confidence; -1 Spearmen -1 Archer)

The head of Derroni was sent to his uncle, King Kalarel-Sar, besieged in Damascus with the message from Baragan-Sar.

"You can hold us no more than you can hold dust in your outstretched fingers." it said.

Kalarel-Sar was fighting another war of survival. The ancient maxim of Siria has come true- that if divided, they will be easy prey. And so when he failed, Phoenicia saw this war as a chance to reimpose stability in both their trade routes and in the internal disputes in their union.

And so Phoenicia invaded, and so Kalarel-Sar was hounded on all sides. And so Damascus itself was besieged, its great walls barely held by his militia, when the message arrived in his study.

And so he made peace with Phoenicia, declared that he will support them and be their new borderland against the rising (and frightening) power of the Hyakkite Empire. And with his surrender rose the Levantine League, more united than the Union of Phoenicia with a council of representatives headed by the union of the Prince of Tyre and Kalarel-Sar’s daughter. (+Levantine League)

In terms of war, Boukae continues to push into Levea, using Irud as their base. Against the Danaen, they could not move against their growing fleet and their increasingly professional army. However, there is much to fight in Viria’s Hitherland, and so there they invaded. Viria was hard pressed and lost some valuable borderland, but they too managed to use their fleet well in outflanking their opponents. Boukae would need to master both the sands and the sea to invade deeper into Levea. (Danae: -Warriors+Spearmen; Viria –Ships; Boukae –Ships +1 loot)

“When has war been bad for business? You just need to know how to dodge it, that’s all.”-Merchant Prince Jasha of Danae

Between the War of Siria and Boukae’s expansion, as well as the endless raids between the three Exalted states, economies continue to develop and trade continues to slowly grow.

The new Hyakkite kingdom made a deal of securing their infrastructure. This became especially important after the War with Siria ended, as trade resumed the new roads proved themselves useful at moving goods throughout the region.

Parusha saw its unique position with glee. A merchant caravan can travel all the way to the sea after crossing only one border. To help facilitate trade further inland, as well as to help them shift their chariot forces, they projected a new road system.

Viria and Danae were rather busy against the Boukans, but that doesn’t mean they ignored their own infrastructure. They, too, put effort in stabilizing the infrastructure which was not maintained since the invasion of Southern Levea by the Last Dual King.

The Exaltation of Hormun saw a unique opportunity after their unification. Once more, they contolled the straits, and once more, they sought to squeeze as much money as possible from the growing trade. So they started a new project to ensure their commercial superiority.

Meanwhile, the Levantine League developed the first known drydocks in the world. They would have a reservoir and a shingled bed. Opening the gates, they would have enough water in the shingles to pull a ship up, close the gates, and repair the ship. The reservoir was refilled by tides on the other side of a peninsula. They will build a system of such docks to try to reduce the exorbitant costs of maintaining their vital fleet.

And then, away from it all, we have City-state of Etass and the nearby Moserean tribes.

The Mitanni tribes also worship Kitabalism, but a much more simpler version that existed in the days when the first cornerstone of the Library of Sarte was laid. They alternatively fought and traded, and a traveling clan of “Mosereans”, who claim Moser as their ancestor, preached, traded, taught, and fought.

Etass used these trading connection to establish themselves closely to the various tribes. For the first time, significant trading operations started as their forges cried for copper and tin. The land was irrigated and rain was captured in cisterns. A large amount of specialists and military guards brought with the Royal Family were maintained with their funds, although eventually the small state had to let them become ancestral positions. Continuing with the idea of a “small aramya”, they built a small library, a small council house, and a small palace and kept their southern traditions alive as they built new ties with the natives.

Koyun
“I’m bored. Let’s invade someone.” First Highking of War, Fire Lord of Katan

In Koyun, the Koyulun Kingdoms fought a short war. A Katanic Army marched north from Alderia to the Golden City of Keres, where the Keretites put up a good fight, but were inevitably scattered by the Solarian axemen. Moving quickly, the Kingdom established a Highprince of War and demanded loyalty from the rest of the Keretic kingdom.

Although the more southernly regions simply surrendered without a fight, the recently conquered regions resisted conquest. In addition, a formerly Trojan city defected to the Makedonians. However, by all rights it was a master stroke- in one clean cut, the head of the Keretic Kingdom was replaced by one much more friendly to the Highkings of War. They also begun securing their hold over various other conquests, building both roads and ties with the locals. This has kept their administration relatively efficient despite their greatly increased size, and the new roads let them nip several border-march rebellions in the bud.

Northward, the Makedonians united when the news of Byzantinon Blasphemy reached them. (see Eastern Seas) In central Koyun, far from the limits of Katanic power, a new center of trade is growing.

The Eastern Seas
“NOOOO! The wheat MUST FLOW!” -Various cities as the Wealth of Wheat disappeared

War.

War has arrived with the clash of blade on shield.

War has arrived with the smashing of wood into flesh.

War has arrived with the sliding of a hidden blade into another’s back.

War has arrived a generation after the House of Justice threw out the House of Atlantis from the throne of Byzantinos.

As Justinian sought to unite his nation on a new spiritual foundation, the Exnotist peoples of Makedonia and Altyria rose in anger. Even those sworn to the Emperor threw away their oaths of loyalty and declared that they will fight. And yet, even as the region brew against the Byzantinon throne, voices of alliance appeared in the darkness. Thloyrn, staunchly Zirilist, approved of the weakening of Exnotist rivals and a chance to strike harder against the Makedonians. And the Varnans, wary of Triml’s goals concerning the Bosporus, declared in favor of Byzantinos as the people threw out all traces of Altyrian culture they can find.

Amid war, the Wealth of Wheat died. No longer shall the wheat flow as evenly as it did before, as thousands of granaries are empied for seize, or burned in retribution. No longer shall wheat feed the cities across the Central Sea as war closed trade and destroyed merchants.

The war started with a proclamation. The Emperors of Byzantinos are sons of the one and true god, the Sun God. No longer shall Exnotism hold sway within the Emperor, for all shall worship the Emperor. And the Army swore allegiance to the Emperor, he who has lead them to victory after victory. And the towns swore allegiance to the Sun God in his name, for he has tamed the wild frontiers. And many of the commoners, be they skeptical or not, preferred to appear to worship the Sun God, who at least seemed to aid them more than the distant Exnot.

And yet, as the Empire of Byzantinos seemed to unite around his figure, it only let his enemies unite against him. Triml has many mercantile contacts within the government and the cities of the Empire from his former heritage as scion of the House Atlantis. The Makedonian Hordes, longtime allies of the City on Two Lands, rebelled against his rule. And a fleet once destined to end barbaric and heretic peoples on the eastern coast of the Fallen Sea is now sent to end the barbaric and heretic Emperor on the Throne.

The first battle started out at sea, merely hours after the declaration of war arrived on the table of Justinian. At first, it was a skirmish as a squadron was caught by surprise the great Convoy of Atlanyin soldiers. As signal fires were lit and smoke rose in the air, over two hundred warships clashed at sea. Both fleets were experienced at fighting pirates and other fleets, and both once fought together against the Pirates of the Fallen Sea, but all that is forgotten as brother fought brother, client fought supplier, and warrior fight warrior. Eventually, despite Byzantinon edge in pure fleet combat, the Atlanyin Wolfships divided their fleet, sending them retreating but not routed. “The enemy army will have to either retreat or make a suicide attack without supplies”-Justinian, Emperor of the Sun, Lord of Byzantinos, on hearing of the Battle of Eridine

As the Atlanyin established a beachhead of Eridine, defeating the garrison and the small walls there, other forces marched for both sides. The Makedonians advanced into Gallipoli. Although Byzantinon forces defended furiously against their enemies, betrayal by more staunchly and secretly Exnotist opened the gates as the Exnotist forces united before the triple walls of Byzantinos itself. Meanwhile, the Thloyrn and Varnan fleets arrived in Byzantinos, to fight the combined forces of Exnotism, to resist the growing power of the Atlanyin Empire.(Byzantinos: -1 Spearmen -1 Archer)

Then, the foes continued to maneuver for advantages. In the northern Aegean, the Thloryn Squadron there was chased off by a surprisingly well trained fleet by Makedonia, allowing them to push reinforcements for their Koyun brothers. In the farsouth, a Thloryn fleet was caught between a surprise attack by Spartan Archers and a Spartan Fleet, utterly destroying it and allowing the Spartans to recapture Cornith in decisive battle. The Supply fleet from the north for Atlanyin was driven off in an surprise attack by Varnan forces (who themselves were driven off by the main fleet). Armies march towards Byzantinos while Solarians (of the Byzantinon variety) poisoned wells and burned crops. (Atlanyin: -5 Curraghs –Some Supplies)

“Our army cannot retreat, so we must complete this attack. Damn the supplies! They are not needed.”-Triml the Second, Prince of the Fallen Sea, on hearing of the flight of their supply ships

The final stage of Atlanyin’s plan was pushed forward. Makedonians swarmed the triple walls while Byzantinon Spearmen fought back. The main Atlanyin fleet offered battle to the Allied Fleet, now totaling more than the amount which fought almost a year ago by this time. While leading the Allied fleet to gullies where their Wolfships have the advantage, a covert force of highly trained and experienced Terror Hounds and Spearmen, honed by years of pirate warfare, landed in the Harbor itself and fought a path towards the palace. At the same time, the gates were opened after confused fighting as layers upon layers of plots were revealed, as Solarians and Exnotist double agents fought for the control of the Gatehouse, one of them was finally opened.

And in swarmed the Makedonian horde. They, who burned Troy to the ground now find themselves within Byzantinos. The First of the triple walls was breached.

And Triml the Second led his Terror Hounds deeper. He was in the second layer of the Triple Walls and the Palace was in all respects, more of a citadel. His only chance is to open the Second of these walls to let the main army deeper. His Terror Hounds drove away many of the new, untested recruits but did not faze the hardened Veteran Imperial Solarians, who dulled his advance.

And thus, the battle hung in balance when the news came that the Atlanyin Fleet was, surprisingly, defeated. They had destroyed the Varnan fleet, and forced the remnants of the Thloryn navy to retreat to the crisis at home, but the inexorable Byzantinon sailors pushed forward against the flanking Wolfships, finally forcing them to flee to safer waters.

And, as the fleet arrived in the harbor to cut off Triml the Second’s retreat, he has opened the second gate. Ignoring the foes behind them, they pushed towards the third and final wall, that surrounding the Palace itself.

There the Imperial Guards of the Emperor Justinian, Son of the Sun God fought the Terror Hounds, Guardsmen of Triml the Second, Prince of the Fallen Sea and the “True Heir of the Byzantinon Throne”. There, the Emperor killed the young Prince, stepping over his resisting body to stab into his heart. And there, he stood smiling, ready to turn the tide. And there he died, killed in the fog of war as he smiled, killed as the young dying prince stabbed into his chest.

As the fog of war ended, everyone except the Makedonians lost.

Atlanyin’s Dynasty ended in battle, for Triml and his heirs died in their gamble.

Justinian’s support collapsed with his death, for how could a son of God die from a dead man?

Varna now takes her revenge on Altyria while a civil war rages, and those governors who survived schemed for power. It was only when their army sought to march on Altyr itself when they finally united.

Makedonia returned with a professional army, curdesy of the Mountain King of Makedonia. The walls of Byzantinos, manned by neither soldier nor spirit, fell.

The fallen were buried at sea.

The fallen sea.

The Western Seas
“NOOOO! The wheat MUST FLOW!” -Various cities as the Wealth of Wheat disappeared

In the Western Seas, life goes on almost as normal. Barbarians are pushed back, nations consolidate their power, religious tension provides amusement for nobles everywhere as overall peace prevails. We see Sardican power stabilize as they successfully defended their borders against intrusion. We see Zirilist power expand as they recaptured the Samnite coast. We see both the continued dominance of Ctesiphod as well as the growing power at Mediolaun and Provence, and the growing influence of the Faith among the exiled Longbardians and the farmers of the Sardican Empire.

In the Sardican Empire, fiscal foresight led to a large treasury, which was gleefully spent this year to secure their wide-spread territories. Their projects were forwarded and moved ever closer to completion while permanent garrisons were established at the growingly accepting men of Krete and Iberia.

“Sorry sir, I was too busy dying of thirst to kill any bandits”-Sardinian Soldiers fighting Lybians

They established their influence and tolerance in establishing the “New City” in Cyrene, after forcing the Lybians to back off into the desert. No taxes, no slavery, no oppression. It is soon becoming the “New Ctesiphod” as at first a trickle, then a flood of migrants from the Eastern Seas quickly boasts it to the size of a great city. In the countryside, the massive influx of troops garrisoned the oasii and pushed the Lybians to the sands, where there are still unknown sanctuaries the Sardican army cannot find. Many Sardicans perished and sacrificed themselves in order to give the city enough security to allow its explosive growth to continue. (Sardican:+1 Urban +1 Domestic -2 Warriors -1 Archer +1 Confidence)

For the Zirilists of Toras-Noth, times are good. A well-funded army surprised the Longbardian raiders, who were expecting a somewhat smaller response. Smashing through their defenses, they slowly but inexorably rounded up the Longbardians for sale, while marching behind in equal resolution are Naffas-Nothan recolonists reclaiming old land.

This has done well for their economy. Zirilia is becoming a densely urbanized region, indeed. Although there is somewhat of a glut in the slavemarket, with the wars in the Eastern Seas and all, the excess were put to use in building massive farms in the backcountry to feed the growing cities. Indeed, by this time most of the merchants in the Central Ocean are Zirilists, living by its code of perseverance, reverence, curiosity and trust. Toras-Noth has once again become a religious center, envy of the Central Ocean. (+XP for army, +3 Urban income +Religious Center +1 Domestic)

“Valyria shall Rise Again!”-battlecry of the growing Longbardian-Sarkish confederacy

Of course, reckless slave hunting and invasion does not have no consequences. Many Longbardians escaping into the ashlands found common purpose with the Sarks. After a generation of intermingling, a Sarkian confederacy is emerging, combining the fanatical Faith of the Sarks with the agricultural proficiency of the Longbardians. The Ashlands were fertile again, or at least enough to found a great regrowth of Sarkish population. (+Sarkish Confederacy)

For the Cytrian States, great monuments were designed as their power reaches new heights. Mediolaun rebuilt Genoa to its former glory, and started to build an Oracle of the Ancestors, so that the whispers of the departed can continue to speak to the living.

“Its… Its… HUGE!”-Rumen's reaction to planned size of the Colossus’s… uh… weapon.

Ctesiphod begins new projects as its regions become ever more independent, yet dependent, upon each other. A great Colossus, representing the massive influence of Ctesiphod on local and regional politics and the power of the united Rumenholds, is planned at the harbor of Rasade, capital of the Apulian Rumenhold. In addition, a great Harbor is designed to be there as well, to be built on a massive scale, it will contain military and commercial docks and markets as well. Interest is flourishing and many move to the growing city to simply stand in awe at the great projects before pitching in themselves. (+1 project progress)

Roads are constructed between Pella and Epirus, increasing trade between the Halls of the Mountain King and the Rumenhold of Pyrrhus, lead by the legendary Hall of the Pyrrhuc Kings. Between Aphod and Mencua settlers and criers slowly swayed many of the valley folk into selling land or joining the Rumen Council. However, in the hills, a proud clan forbade any member of their tribe from defecting and turned back any settler who tried to set up a farmstead, but still eagerly accepted merchants. (+1 trade +1 Domestic)

Iberia and Provence both have prosperous years of slow expansion, using gile more often than force.

There are two events which affected the entire region of the Western Seas.

Firstly, the conflict between the Zirilists, Faithful and Ancestrial believers is increasing. Although Ancestrial and Zirilist ports are barred from Faithful merchants, and, indeed, Zirilist merchants controlled the seas, the Faithful found huge followings among the farmers and common people of the Hegemonic Sardican Empire, who follow their teachings of Loyalty and Disipline. In addition, the Sarkish Confederacy also follow a variant of the growing Faith.

Secondly, the Wheat trade ended. There was a sudden decline of population in many areas such as Zirilia, Ctesiphod and such massive trade cities which relied more on their contacts rather than their already strained local production. Famine is the name of the game for a decade or so, until the growing slave-farms of Zirilia finally caught up to, and slowly exceeded local demands. Opening farms at Illyria and the Samnite Coasts also helped alleviate some of the pain, but it is still felt across the Western Seas as this lucrative trade simply disappeared from the map.

Keltia
“Is it war that starts civilization, or civilization that starts war?”- Grey Lance Philosopher

As barbarian tribes continue to migrate and organized warfare spreads, the region of Keltia is becoming ever more united in the face of the many dangers that plague the region. New states form, alliances are made, and diplomacy is tried as the first civilized states slowly find their advantage slipping as their rivals taste the waters of organization for themselves.

“Ok, I’m SURE there was a village here just a week ago!”-Sirius IV, Lord of Spire, King of Vahlshallah

After repeated cries of respect being interpreted as insults arrived in Spire, Sirius decides to launch the first war since those only heard from legends and writings of the Violet Faith. In all respects, he felt he should be sure of his success- their numbers are overwhelming, their Royal Guardsmen are strong, and the enemy have the sea to their backs.

Oh wait, they also have ships. With a sad look entire villages escaped the wrath of the Vahlshallah. A message from a survivor simply stated that the Council of Chiefs are very very disappointed.

When the messenger was killed, another, lurking ship cast off.

Soon, naval raids started attacking settlers trying to move in. Although the Royal Guards do a good job in limiting the damage, it proves to be too much for a unit of spearmen who moved back from the western front for a breather. (-1 Spearmen)

Oh? In the west? Well, a large Faithful settling party moved to establish a new city, as before. However, this time there was some resistance. Hundreds were slaughtered as they brushed past those in their path, but even more are gathering under the banner of the Boarhanded.

Additionally, they have settled many cities, but didn’t focus as much on their farms and roads. Although this was done by Faithful settlers or taken from tribes they drove away, this only works to a point. Much food is consumed and many farmers work day and night only to find it all be carted to feed the growing cities, with little left for themselves. (-1 Domestic +1 Urban)

“Strike with silence like the owl. Strike with quickness like the hawk. Strike with ferocity like the bear. Strike with many like the wolf. Strike with one like the snake.”- An Unsullied Mantra

In western Keltia, the retribution for the Frenkish invasion was rapid and harsh. Armies were raised, a large force descended upon the forces of the Warlord who invaded them. Destroying his field forces with a ploy and infiltrating Orleans with the Unsullied, King Cernyd personally decapitated the one who assassinated his father in the center of the city, liberating it in the name of Osisimied.

To the south, more Frenkish hordes gathered and broke up, like the endless tides. Cernyd decided that the only way to secure his country is to destroy the Frenks, once and for all.

To this end, he hired some of the more conciliatory and mercenary Ostavans to invade the eastern Frenks while he himself cleared the borderland near Orleans in preparation to march to Tours, the next major town on the river. (-1 Spearmen (1.5), +Unsullied XP)

The Ostavans did their job well initially, using the strength of the Belief to rout the Frenks and capture a major trading town. However, they balked at the need to march over a hundred miles, through countless tribes, to strike at a fortress town far to the south. Instead, arms full of loot and a loyal army beneath him, a warlord named Clovis killed the other mercenary captains, took over the arrayed forces of Ostava, and called upon the Belief to allow him to unify the lands.

This, he succeed with merciful efficiency, letting recalcitrant enemies to live and punishing those who still resist severely. It seems that Masgard approves, for his forces won every battle and trough blood and steel unified the Ostavans of the Seine.

To Tours, marched the Osisimied army. On the march, they found the brothers of the invading Warlord uniting their forces for revenge. After a hard fought battle, they gave ground and waited. Sure enough, the union was not to last and the coalition fell apart. In sailed the Osismied navy and through a hard fought battle they gained the vassalage of one of the wronged brothers and drove the other way.

It was a tattered army that marched once more, with loyal Frenkish Militia in tow, towards the south. There, they found that the last brother, being the only major force in the region, managed to intimidate his way into kingship. Knowing that his enemies are weary, he begun wearing down the advancing armies with his less-loyal allies. However, they approached his city faster than expected, forcing him to pull his forces away from unifying the country to rush the battle.

It was apocalyptic, the Osismieds were outnumbered, but they managed to franticly build a wagon fort with their supplies and holed up as the King of the Southern Frenks tested their defenses. IN a final, all out attack, he was barely defeated. It was a close run thing, but in the end, the Osismiens survived to retreat themselves.

When the King of the Frenks himself died from a coalition of southern tribes, there was more squabbling, but now a new King sits on the throne, and he has new ideas about how to deal with the growing power of Osismied.

Meanwhile, the last surviving brother was shown trust in exchange for loyalty, and spirits among the conquered Frenks rose in seeing that the victors might not necessarily make them victims. (-1 Spearmen -2 Unsullied +2 Domestic)

“Look, a nice village we can pilla… oh.. oh gods…. Get your knife off m…”-A bad day to attack the Unsullied

The Strumithing begun to put ever more pressure on their Keltic neighbors, using both the carrot and the stick to break apart budding coalitions and spread their influence much further than their nominal borders would suggest. Still a clannish culture, they have continued their efforts of their last generations with renewed efforts, struggling to bring any renegade clans squarely under the Buertgang Clan.

In Britannia the battles begun to rage ever fiercer as the Dhanraig warriors joined ranks with Kentus tribes men and begun destroying any tribe who allied with Lundien, while promising (and indeed, following) to ignore neutral tribes and generously gifting allies. The Kentus has emerged as signifigant lackeys for the Strumithing, building a large town out of loot and dominating the other Brittanic allies the Buertgang might have gathered. The coastal area and a signifigant area upriver has been devastated and replaced with less inimical tribes, who simply try to keep their heads low and avoid attention of the rather efficient coalition and alliance the Strumithing gathered. (+1 Domestic)

Any advance deeper, however, risks attack on Unsullied outposts, which strengthened local garrisons. In the small scale actions common in this time, their training and dedication proves deadly to any Dhanraig warrior who attempts to raid a village under the protection of Lundien and Dumonos. In larger campaigns to force a chief’s decision, the Unsullied struck like phantoms, killing friendly chiefs and scattering supplies. There is quite a good reason to not declare for either side, after all. Lundien organized its government with the help of their Keltic allies and issued a call to arms among the population, gathering many militia from the southern cape. (-1 Spearmen, +5 Curragh XP)

To the south, similar but lighter pressure was placed on the Believers of Eastern Ostava. To say the least, some ground was gained but at the expense of patience of the Believers, most of whom prefer to be ruled by either themselves or another practioner of the Belief. On the other hand, the large sums chalked up for the use in campaigning also helped alleviate some of the pressure, as trade instead of warfare reigns. (+1 trade)

This time also sees a true growth of Buertgang culture, with the rise of warrior songs and chants of war being common in the halls of the Dhanraig people. Agricultural projects and common experiences across the Narrow Sea also builds solidarity for the Strumithing. Even as the Strumithing grows stronger and more able to govern, it is well perceived that the Buertgang role, although still major, is becoming diluted as minor clans and tribes in the hundreds, although mostly allied with the Buertgang, gain more control in the government of the Dhanraig. The Nile
“Don’t you love the water here? You can taste the crap from Axum to Zana!”-Graffiti on an Avarian Alley

Once again, unification presses on the minds of Egyptians as all seek to either be the unifier, or at least get a good position in the process. Thebes and Damietta leads the way as neutral states are absorbed or marginalized. The new Kingdom of Nubia builds its first great Pyramid, the apex of their many accomplishments as of unification while Kartoros suffers an unexpected setback in the crushing of the Severi Confederacy.

“…before we can build a New Egyptian Empire… we must end all remnants of the old…”-Declaration of war on Anor by Damiettia, Avaris and Beni-Hasan.

With the completion of Anor’s Legacy of the Throne, they gained more prestige among the common people of Egypt. This is what many feared, and untimately broke the Avaris-Anorian alliance as the three states in Lower/Middle Egypt declares war on the incumbent contender. Although they fought bravely to defend their temples and their leaders, they were crushed by the coalition. A new puppet government was established, control of the temples were given over to the organization of the Priests of Basat in Avaris, and all Lower Egypt becomes settled into the Damiettan Sphere of Influence. Trade is finally fully dislodged and, now safely at peace, Damiettia can now slowly influence the upper classes of each individual state to rise, and for each individual king… to fall.

“And the day we unite to a common purpose, will be remembered as the first day for the reunification of Egypt for a common people!”-Marriage between the Houses of Abydos and Thebes

After generations of diplomacy and intrigue, the Kingdom of Thebes is truly on the march to unification, prosecuting a successful war against a rebellious town and then marrying into the Royal House of Abydos. Trade spread even further and Theban merchants are soon seen along with Axumites in the near east. In the south Levant, their influence slowly grows, to be meet by the growing resistance based in Jaffa (and supposedly funded by Avaris.)

In war and in peace, Thebes relish in their mastery of the political arena. It took them nearly a century, but Abydos soon joined Thebes in alliance after a quick war, and slowly they are absorbed into the Theban government. When they attacked Beni-Hasan, who continuously denounced Abydan toll gates, they made good headway until the Lower Coalition joined, and extracted themselves with little difficulty. A looser marriage alliance was proposed and accepted by the Nubian Empire, which led to a greater trade and exchange of influence. In the Near Levant, they skillfully used diplomacy and slighty greased palms to scatter initial resistance and spread their influence. Only the great Warchief of Jaffa, who had launched his own bid for unification just a few years ago and captured Jerusalem, openly stands against him. (+Confidence +Trade)

In trade too, the Thebans have mastered. Sailing skillfully in the red sea, their merchants are becoming ever bolder, even reaching past Axum themselves in search of goods. Some might be attributed to their newly completed Red Sea Ports, but truly the current explorers stood on the shoulders of the giants who invented efficient sails, settled Arabian colonies, and prevented the rise of piracy in the so-far pristine seas. Much is focused in infrastructure between Abydos and Thebes, and this has aided in breaking any barriers which grew during the fall of the First Egyptian Empire and facilitated commonwealth between the two cities.

In the desert, Damiettan forces gain experience fending off Lybian raiders. One of the major southern Oasii fell to constant attacks, making their generations ever larger and danger to the Egyptians ever greater.

The Nubian Empire builds great pyramids and temples to certify their reign. The people are prosperous, the priest are pacified, and the King is content. Nubia is becoming unified in ideas as mines are rebuilt and roads are paved.

The Severi Confederacy took advantage of a minor slave revolt to attack and cut off an entire Kartoran army, starving it to death. They then slowly pushed forward, beating back any counter attack by fading away into the hills and surrounding the armies sent by the Kuhorsehockyes. Some of them swore that they can see the glint of Nubian arms among the growingly competent warriors of the Severi Armies.

“Oh joy, another local conflict.”

Axum builds one of the biggest fleets in the east, over fifty ships, to help spread their influence. They also built a great road system connecting the Nile to the Red Sea and established their own colony on Arabia. Their trade and domestic income reap the benefits as they keep an advantage on the Red Sea trade and even begun trading directly to India. Eterik and Aden mostly ignored each other, with Eterika mostly too busy conquering barbarians to even care.

India
“Give back what you get, and you will always receive more.”-Raj Kumar V

Peace reigns in India, and under her benevolent rule the people of the tropical subcontinent developed rapidly. Gujarat and Dakinsa expands peacefully in the south, trading with the local deccans and learning new ideas to incorporate back home while Daretokimas, finally reuniting the Stellar Kingdom, struggles to rebuild the deep wounds which once tore the country apart. Trade flourishes, technology grows, and the future looks bright for the subcontinent.

In Dakinsa, cities are redesigned and rebuilt to be larger than ever before, to better support the burgeoning trade emerging from the Red sea and the Aramyan gulf. Bronze, once the sole province for the spearheads and helmets of the Raj’s soldiers, is becoming ever more common for use as plows, or pots, or tools; slowly but surely the remnants of the stone age are being done away forever. Away from the crowded Indus riverbanks are new opportunities far to the south.

There, new and growing colonies are established among the amiable Deccan locals, and a growing trade emerged, with bronze tools and other advanced crafts traded for good ores and exotic local spices. Ernakaulans even report another sea, and a gigantic island there. For the Gujaratis the time of peace allows them to convince the locals to join them in worship of the incarnations of Shiva, Kishna and others, and in a high mountain pass they finally contacted the mysterious peoples who patronized the coastal fishermen. It is yet unknown of the secrets he held, but Diamonds are appearing in Gujarati markets.

In the Stellar Kingdom, the Daretokiman Raj’s rule was gentle and kind, far cry from the authoritarian Kings of Patal. An embassy was built by the Dakinsa Rajdom, and the Daretokiman Rajdom quickly repaid the favor, showing the great friendship between the two large kingdoms. What concerns them is the still violent seperationist movements within the Stellar kingdom, and the ever bloody battles in the lawless area to the south.

For all nations, trade grows fitfully and prosperity joins peace in her rule.

For all people, rumors tell of a new menance from the old source.

China
“Silence is golden. Silence broken once a lifetime is priceless.”-Kan Yi-Len on the Silent Emperors

Friendship unites the civilized nations of china stronger than any oath or bondage. The Zhou sail, brining Han merchants along with their cargo. The Wei conquer, aided by a regiment of their stalwalt allies. And the Xiyi way of life slowly pervades through both Duchies, and their leaders grow ever more silent, and their borders ever more loose. To the south, the Yueh are learning quickly that former cultural precedence won’t prevent the destruction of their precious terraces, and begun banding together as well.

With the completion of their project, the northern Chinese Han now feel truly united under the Silent Emperor. Almost gone are all former loyalties, now they are loyal to each other, the Emperor and the Xiyi state. Kan Yi-Len, son of the famous Kan Lai-shi, managed to get government funding. After a lifetime of work, he unveiled a veritable library of scrolls and records, detailing history from the murky beginnings of the village now known as Xilatang all the way to the end of the Green Plague, focusing on great characters in history like the first Silent Emperor. He also chronicled dozens of great poets and hundreds of poems for prosperity, and gave the new united nation something to point to and say “That is the legacy we will live up to!” (++Culture ++Confidence)

From the Zhou came knowledge of a distant land of the rising sun, placing contact between the warring Yamato Clans such as the Katos and the Kubodas as well as Ainu tribes such as the Bearclaw and the Ravenwings. While the Zhou developed an elite ocean-sailing unit using Xiyi funds, already the shear mass of merchants trying to reach the Land of the Sun led to some success, and much profits when they inevitably come home. (+Trade)

To the Wei they sent a regiment of their Longspears. Using them as elite sprearheads, the Wei launched an attack on the more uncivilized Man city states, destroying those who hired the bandits and incorporating it into their duchy. Holding the advantage, they pushed south, and with several brutal battles, reached the Huai river. With only the former capital of the Huai Kingdom independent, they are planning to declare their Duke Li III Emperor once they capture it.

Epilogue

So we’ve seen the second generation of civilizations rise in the dust of the first. And we see the glorious rekindling and rebirth of culture and civilization as leaders once more took the reigns of power and guided their people to victory.

And so we see the second generation of barbarians appear, jealous, plotting, developing.

Ready to destroy civilization, and become the seed of the next generation.

MAELSTROM POLITICS - A Hitchhikers Guide

Parusha

Perhaps the best place to start off if you’re a novice, Parusha’s efficient roads and ample traders. For the hitchhiker in need of cash, telling the folks over here you’re the son of some such god or this or that works their pockets nicely. Be careful though, they despise some gods, which their neighbours love, and this is true in the neighbours lands too. Parusha, unlike the other Levean states, doesn’t despise the High Kings of Hyak. In Parusha you can be a Hyak without being persecuted. They are generally in favour of Hyak trade, being situated as the easy tax bypass through Levea to Hormun. They are also very friendly to uncivilized clans in the mountains, and are generally a multicultural state. They also pay a small tithe, often of 1 Standard Intergalactic Economic Unit (usually just called eco points) to the Vizier’s Exaltation, though they decrease the tithe to half an eco point in times of general stability or outright war (whereupon the Parushans have a border with the Hyaks, and spend their money fighting that front). They do this partially out of piety, but mostly to strengthen forces and prevent the High Kings of Hyak from penetrating into Old Aramya. When the Danaens try to shift the balance of power and attack Viria or even Parusha, the open plains leading to Danae serve the Parushan chariot forces nicely, and often stabilize these power grabs.

Viria, or the Vizier’s Exaltation

Oh yes, what a self absorbed mess this one is. The best advise you can be given for this godforsaken, god blessed region is keep to the rivers, and don’t touch land. They have god taxes everywhere, god tax on passage between towns, god taxes over rivers, god taxes over bridges (which compound if your going over a river (where else are there bloody bridges?!)), god taxes on your wife and bread and ungodly taxes on your beer. The Virians are remarkably conservative, and although the more modern, intergalactic traveller might be offended by what they are offended by, piety is a form of currency, as they say, in that land, and the restrictions allow the viziers tight control of their country, especially in time of war with the Hyaks, to who they are fairly hostile generally, except for trade.

Danaen Exaltation

A merchant centre, for naval commerce and exchange, as well as scheming and in fighting, the commercial state in southernmost Old Aramya has no pity. You could be king, and holding your thump up for a cab would only lose you your hand (if it had anything of value on it, which seeing as you’re a king, you likely do). The sprawling, gluttonous ruling elites oil themselves in gold coins; one died by suffocating in a pool of wealth. They care about their wealth and nothing more, so they would never want Hyak intrusion into a stable and prosperous agricultural land. They too pay a 1 eco point tithe to the Virians to legitimize their rule to their subjects and fund military operations there (they also try to decrease the costs in times of peace, with more interest than the Parushans). The Danaens often brawl to gain power over the Virians or Parushans whenever they are weak, and especially bother the Boukaens for their “barbarity”.

Update, sweet! :goodjob:

Awesome :D

The night is coming to an end. The farmlands have grown. The trade flows through the city like water flows through the Nile, steadily, yearly, always. The days of fracture are coming to an end. The last year had a fine flood, one so perfect it must have been blessed by Hapi herself. Plenty food now flows through the markets of Abydos and Thebes and it is sold for high prices to faraway lands. Through Damietta wheat flows north, to the fracturing unknown lands. It is a strange day when Egypt is powerful even while fractured.

A new dawn is rising over Egypt. Already Upper Egypt has been united by the rightful king of Egypt. The Pschent, holy dual crown of Egypt, has been found in one of the grand temples to Osiris in Thebes, capital of Upper Egypt. That is a sign from the gods. The royal blood of Abydos and Thebes has been chosen. Once we were defenders of separation, now we are blessed by the gods to unite.

From Timna rich copper flows. It does not come for free, Egyptian and loyal Canaanites and Edomites blood is spilled every year to protect the flow of resources from those who wish nothing but chaos and destruction. Set tries hard to maintain chaos from the lands of southern Canaan and Edom. Rumors and diplomats from the Libyans new rise to power also bring words of chaos. Osiris will not let this happen. Thoth's priests are speaking of a grand prophecy. The god Horus will unite his spirit with that who will bring order and unity back to Egypt. Osiris has already shown that is the king of Upper Egypt, and soon, all of Egypt.

A new day has begun. Let the dogs of war bark. Let order rule all of the Nile again.

Description:

I've updated all the stats.

To do list: Diplomacy, Update Guide of Leadership (especially concerning orderset format), Add NPC Catalogue for Adoption, Add generic descriptions.

For generic descriptions, I would really like if all players would write up a series of characteristics their nation has shown over several turns so that they wouldn't be updated every turn. I would like it in such a format. [Usually True][True Under Circumstances][Local Circumstance]

For example, for the Levantine League. [1]The Levantine League is a loose but vital alliance in the Levant after the collapse of the Egyptian Empire and the rise of Pirates. Their government is a collection of various city states, usually coerced into action by the "Big Three", Tyre, Ugarit, and Damascus.[2] Nonetheless, the league has always avoided dissolution due to the common purpose of profit- they must rid themselves of foreign influence and pirates. [3]Now with the local problems done, they can look outside their border towards the growing power of Hyak, the coalscing Egyptians, the spreading Sardicans, the Katanic Empire, or even opportunities in the Aegean. However, perhaps this means that the small city states see no more reason to continue to contribute.

The Usually true would be updated perhaps once every 5 turns. The True under Circumstances would be updated about twice as often, due to MAJORLY shifted circumstances. I.E. After this turn there must be something else for it to stay together or someway to reaffirm the dangers of the outside world. Local Circumstantial description would be updated every turn, usually just one line summarizing a shift in position.

Not on the front page! I always leave a day in wait so any inconsistances can be spotted, since I've noted that several players don't put their stats in their orders and cannot check.

I will update the front page tomorrow, the stats are on the end of the update.

Terrance, is the Sarkish Confederacy represented in stats? Excellent update. I started scheming the moment I finished reading.

Not yet, they are still uniting and plotting.

But, thanks to the mass conversion of the Longbardians, they now have a viable population (inbreeding was going to severely cut them off in this update, ending Zirilist slave income there) and the technical skills the Longbardians brought allowed them to make "secret gardens" to feed themselves.

But wait, here's the good news!

Moldath's slavery income just got boasted due to larger amount of potentially enslaved population... who are also really good at resisting enslavement!

New Xiyi description:

The Xiyi Kingdom is the premier power in the Han Chinese heartlands. Its line of Emperors have, over the years, seen a series of drastic changes that have shaped the Kingdom over the centuries. The philosophy of Confucius has become central to Xiyi society, as have the arts - both martial and mental.
In the past the Xiyi have made allies of both northern nomads and other Chinese nations to foster the Kingdom's purposes and save themselves from destruction. Technological advances, wars, plagues and diplomatic niceties have all had a part in shaping Xiyi into the regional power it currently is.
Xiyi influence is very high in the surrounding Duchies of Zhou and Wei, so much so that a unification of the Han peoples is no longer a pipe dream. It is unknown how such an event would pan out, but rumour has it that those who are curious won't have to wait very long to find out.

Ignore the last part of that VM, then. I guess you just saw the description. :D
