The Deity Challenge Line-up #23 - Huns' invasion

T294 SV

Spoiler :
So after taking the continent, I tried to get my science going, which worked so lala. I just started catching up when I had to decide if I go on the war path again, or stay your nice neighborhood hun. I decided to do the latter and scored a science victory one turn before Theodora.
Once again my culture was bad all game long. I was late for Ideologies and only got 1 free tenet freedom. I got massive unhappiness for going Freedom, but since I could build status of liberty I stuck to it. But could not get 6 tenets together to actual buy a single part, had to hardbuild all of them. WF was never proposed at all, no IG and no Space Station.

On my first attempt I would have finished my final two parts at t295, but Theodora finished that same turn her spaceship and won. I messed up my GS bulbing, with getting two GS and one RA (with Theodora) too much... leaving me researching waaay too much and start building parts too late. So I restarted some 50 turns earlier and replayed the final part. This time, I again messed up my bulbing the other way around. I never agreed to the RA, I started bulbing too early and accidentally switched into full production mode, delaying my final 2 GS. Which caused me to having research the final part for 10 rounds and then build it, while all others would have been finished. I delayed most other space parts and went full research mode, which shaved off a few turns.
In the end, I finished 1 turn earlier then in the last game, whit Theodora missing the final piece.

Research milestones:
t118 Universities
t176 schools
t223 plastics

Besides culture, my other problem was money...I rarely had any in this game. One of the first WC items that passed was embargo city states, and since I was desperately trying to catch up with science, I did not bother exploring, or building a harbor, thus no trade routes to the other nations until very late in game. Even if I would have the culture to get the freedom tenet to buy the pats, I would not have the money.

:goodjob:
Spoiler :
hey, that's a good win. Well done.

Harald of all people.
It just looks like most of his tourism output came from the late Theodora and Boudicca.

And the guy killed most culture runaways but didn't generate much culture himself. People seem to like going after easy victims first, but when I go for conquest, I'd rather cripple strong opponents and then finish off the weaklings if I have a choice.

No, Harald was the culture leader all along, and tourism. Cap-ing Theo just hit the throttle. He went all-in on city-states and was strong because of it. Asherbipinal had the highest military score when I attacked him, and had all of the Celtics lands. If I hadn't stopped him by defending Mumbai with my army, he would have waxed Gandhi too, and moved on to Theo. Assyria was the bigger threat at the time.

Hopefully my home desktop will be back to full HP by then so I may try a twin kill once Arabia rolls out

Well Dropbox is free up to @2Gb, and I was hosting it there, but I had paid for 1Tb and decided not to renew and they won't let me sync it until I go back under my 2GB limit! Serious housekeeping is in order. But you could open a free 2GB account?

Of course. I enjoy doing so. I just can't host until I've sorted my own one out.

About halfway through this one now (T75, probably being super optimistic here). Pretty different game to my last DCL, (#14Babylon). Very fun and a good change up to normal play for me. Up to turn seventy five at the moment, but might shelve finishing this one until I've had a crack at the most recent game. I've got some screen caps I'll put up later when I'm not on mobile.

Spoiler :
Wandered my settler East for a bit until I came across Ethiopia's second settler, settled on the coast before he could and fired on the escort until I could grab the settler. Managed to pop a weapons upgrade for my warrior on about turn four, which made it harder to stop the second settler... But it meant I had Addis Ababa by about turn seven.

Built a couple of warriors and tracked Rome down from where his scout came from. Had his first expo by about turn twenty and had him finished off by about T30. Using his expo to destroy his troops and just leaving and retaking the city when he was getting close to nabbing it back made it a cake walk.

Cleared George off the map by turn sixty five. Now to get some galleases ready for a nice frigate rush on the other continent!

DV T356
I was going to shelve this for a while but I was having too much fun pillaging the world.
Spoiler :
Could have won faster probably if I'd gone tradition instead of honor and razed a couple of the secondary cities on my own continent. The problem was that I didnt get frigates until after T150, so I only managed to scrape out 3/5 capitals with them, then had to wait for battleships ~T250. Could have won with them but I really wanted to hurt Assyria and Denmark, so teched to Nukes.

Given the start I had (4 cities by T27 w/ their own workers), I really feel that this time should have been much better. I think a complete Frigate rush should be doable if you can get them more like 110-120 instead of 150. This would then allow for a sub 200T victory I would think

Spoiler :
I did several things differently this time, and caught a lucky bounce when Washington built the ToA for me instead of marching a carpet or early units on turn 50. Maybe stealing a worker from him changed his plans?

I went full Tradition this game, and stayed more in my lane in general after the open. OCC to start, and I kept 5 conquests on my continent. I stepped on a ram ruin again, and also 2 pop ruins and a culture ruin. I didn't mess around with a granny this time, and went scout/scout/warrior/archer/9 HA/horseman. I took Addis early, then finished Haile on turn 46. I had America by turn 74, and then had to hustle everyone across the map because my worker and archer couldn't hold off Caesar from getting to my borders any longer. Caesar had a nice carpet going, but everyone arrived in time to only lose my horseman and one HA. I took Rome on turn 96.

After that I slowly annexed all the cities, used my GGs to grab two out of reach luxes, and just grew my 6 cities and built infrastructure. I didn't feel good about my production or gold when frigates came around, so I ended up going for an Autocracy fueled Missile Cruiser/XCOM run, with bomber support to start and Stealth to finish. I finished commerce by wining the WF, finding and buying cultural CSs, and bulbing 3 GW right at the end of it. While I waited to tech, I bought up most of the CSs to keep Harald from passing Order as the World Ideology (Theodora was going for CV and went Freedom after Harald went Order, but she didn't have many CSs).

I set up Washington as my military hub, and managed to snag the Brandenburg Gate there. New York built Big Ben and Neuschwanstein, which was helpful for my late game conquest window. A faith GE rushed Prora in Washington. I added the Heroic Epic to Washington, and bought almost my entire navy and airforce there, along with several XCOMs. I stopped working specialists after teching XCOMs, switched to gold focus, and built out TPs after I finished my rail lines. My other 3 strong cities supported all the buying in Washington by building XCOMs while the other two made gold.

On turn 260 Clauschwitz starts, and the clock starts too. Ashurbipinal was first as he was the clear military and tech leader same as my last game, only this time he kept snowballing and had already finished the Apollo Program (my worst beat ever was a turn 218 launch by this guy on another continent). Plus everyone hated him and I was able to liberate a bunch of city-states. I worked my way around the continent from Mumbai, with a brief pause after peace with Assyria to get the cities I kept out of resistance and get some happiness headroom. I took Edinburgh and raised another city to get peace, and then wiped out Theodora to get rid of her Ideological pressure. I was impressed; she started buying space ship parts in a scramble to win before I killed her. I cracked open Exploration on the same turn I captured the GL from Theodora, so I was able to get the fleet around to Copenhagen and cap Harald the turn I DOW'd him. 9 movement double-tap Missile Cruisers are fun .

I do want to get better at winning domination with earlier units, but I really just wanted to beat this map so I went for the sure thing.

Nice job nmp. :) Tradition was actually my first instinct here too, I never actually finished it because it just started to feel too tedious around t100. That's the problem with HAs/Camels/Keshiks lol.

Good job!

Thanks! Tradition is always a strong play, but I was so much ahead of my Liberty game on this map it was funny. There's too much of a gap between HA and frigates for me to be able to get Honor going on continents with Attila.

T228 Dom after rage quitting the first stint on T12. Mental recovery was quick but the game wasn't - AI can build units when it wants to. Also, reading then OP notes would've been helpful but I can only blame myself for being lazy.

Pics included.

Write up will have to wait until tomorrow.

Spoiler :

Given the non-standard map I figured I'd go for a non-standard game.
Step 1: conquer home continent with UUs
Step 2: peaceful science victory

Religion
God King pantheon
Faith from CS (barb camb, returned worker) helped me get last religion, only one on my continent
Tithe & Pagodas
Religious Community & Religious Texts

Policies
Full Tradition
right Side Commerce
4 in Rationalism
7 in Order

Couple Notes
T25 Double-DOWd, ugh
T114 Continent is clear; I have 8 cities
T126 Education
T184 Scientific Theory
T199 2nd to Ideologies, 1st to Order. Generating a lot of Faith, so should be able to get several GE for spaceship parts
T219 Plastics
T298 Science Victory

Spoiler :

Yeah, I have no idea why. It's almost guaranteed that you end up with a continent to yourself before you meet the other. Maybe people only want to play Huns on Pangaea?

I really can't wait to see your play through Peddro, but please use some software to boost the gain of your mic. Otherwise I can't hear you :(
