Dragonxander PR's Earth 37 civsmap

Hi, didn't get very far on previous map cause I haven't been at home in last few days. But one question is still on my mind after the update. Why are there so many Germans archers in Arabic land in the start of the game? (playing on emperor)

DO you still need maps of south american and oceania reasources

Two things:

1. I didn't know about the archers issue; it's most likely due to me not having coded yet the starting locations on par with the corresponding spots; & in your difficulty (emperor), any units not present in-game for the AI would be delivered in their coded starting location.

2. Yes, I still need resource maps for South America & for Oceania.

i found this map it shows where coal oil and uranium are.

I couldn't find many maps with minerals like copper and iron. However i know that aluminum is found in northern south america in Guyana Suriname and FFrench Guiana

If you're going to start on turn 0, you need to remove everything related to the players from the map, and set everything via the starting locations. A turn 0 WBS will place the settler and starting unit(s) based on where the starting location is defined. This is the cleanest thing to do, and is well worth it in the long run. Leaving the starting locations disparate from player stuff on the map, on turn 0 is just asking for issues like random Celtic Warriors appearing in South America, etc. Also it just makes things simpler to take everything off the map that doesn't need to be there.

I have to say I've been striked by a schoolwork tsunami; & I can't warrant any further progress (none since the last update I gave) until Easter & Spring Break. Also, I've been busy during weekends with other sorts of activities.

Yes, sorry for that big hiatus without informing you on the GEM. Why didn't I say anything for that long?

- Busy with high school graduation & college enrollment errands
- I had some problems with the screen of my computer (now I have a bigger one!)
- Spent some time completing the current BETA version.

This is the GEM by the night of July 19, 2010:

Spoiler :

I have the starting locations already programmed--they're still fixed, though. For those who want to know them, here's the list of coordinates & places:

Spoiler :
For those who don't know, Civ maps are 1st quadrants of a Cartesian Chart. This means the origin (0, 0) is located at the bottom left. The GEM's dimensions are 192 x 120 tiles:

The Ottomans aren't starting in Ankara nor in Istambul, as the former would be too close to Constantinople, & the latter would be Constantinople itself. Sumeria doesn't start on Mesopotamia, but rather on Jerusalem's place--this is because it would be within Babylon's BFC. The other locations were chosen to allow for 50 defined starting places within LoR. Note that the order of the starting locations tries to balance the crowding of the map, but still keeping the 37 LoR civs as the first ones

As for the resources, this is what I have:

- I more or less tried to be around 37 of each in most cases--I placed more for the ones that had enough space & that can be used for corporations; & there's a few that are in smaller amounts (whales, uranium, ivory). Some resources stand out to represent several others. For instance, silk represents cottong as well; spcies stands out for spices, coffee & cocoa; deer stands out for antelopes & other hunted ungulates; & the furs appear in places beyond ice & tundra (say, Brazilian river otters; & not only beavers & polar seals).

- I would have liked to place more construction stones (marble & granite), but info. on their main quarries is quite scarce.

- I made big overhauls to North America, South America & Africa. The other places have either been revised before (Europe, Asia), & others haven't needed it yet (Oceania, Antartica).

EDIT: I now include here the 7zip version of the GEM--it's ready for testing; & I'd like some feedback on how to improve it.

Your map looks cool but the starts I don't think are quite the way you want em. Each player always starts in the same spot no matter the race picked.

An example of your map with the civs starting locations pre-picked, though the leader has to be specified for each civ, is "Dragonxander GEM vBETA Pre-Placed.zip". In this file I only specified 2 civs.

An example of your map with the same civs but the starting locations are random using pre-defined starting locations that have been defined in the plots section not the player section in "Dragonxander GEM vBETA Pre-Picked Random.zip", again with only 2 start spots specified (same start locs as previous example).

Or an example of your map with random civs/leaders and completely random start locations in "Dragonxander GEM vBETA Random.zip".

And if you wanted a good reference page for a WBS file, http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=135669 is a page I use with lots of info.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks to Nyven for the WB editing help--I now programmed the starting locations onto the GEM. This means players can choose any civ & start in any of the following starting locations:

Spoiler :
Starting location coordinates & their respective places:

=Egypt (107-74)
=China (157-87)

=Alberta (28-99)
=Chile (49-35)
=Argentina (56-33)
=Tibet (146-77)

As for what's left to do, I want you to testplay the map, & inform on suggestions & problems that may arise that can be solved by terrain & resource balancing. I'm including with this post the current version of my GEM--"Dragonxander GEM casi listo" ('casi listo' means 'almost ready', for those who don't know Spanish).

I've been recommended to do the following so far:

- reduce the forestation on the USA's start

And I've considered the following:

- Given the annoying aridness of SW North America, it may be necessary to place floodplains on the lower Colorado River. This would help the California starting location, especially if the British Columbia starting location is being used as well.
- Some food might be needed for the SE Asia highlands--this includes inland Myanmar & SW China.
- Remodelling Central Europe--this includes enlarging Poland, adding the Mosa river, relocating some resources, enlarging the Elbe River & making the Danube in such a way that the Main river can be placed properly.

Feedback on these & additional problems & possible solutions would be appreciated; the same with any additional feedback you all might provide.

This is my Giant Earth Map--I've made some final tweaks, & at best, it's ready to use. The only things left would be testplays for final balance adjustments. Due to its size & the lack of having a size programming bigger than huge for LoR, I recommend playing it with "No Tech Trading", as the civs on Noble difficulty get advanced rather soon. Anyone using other mods allowing for tons of civs on the same map is welcome to use my GEM.

Enjoy!

Excellent work, I've been looking for a map like this. You've obviously put a lot of time and thought into this.

However, I'm confused over how to get the civs to start in their predefined locations as was discussed in the thread a few posts ago. Every time I start a game, the civs are in seemingly random predefined locations (for instance, America is on the Nile where Egypt should be, etc.). Am I missing something?

I programmed the map to allow any civ to start on any of 50 pre-defined starting locations. Something I could do is to provide several versions of the map with pre-defined starting locations, more or less corresponding to certain eras. Say, I could make a map with the civs corresponding to Earth as it was by 1000 AD, & have the corresponding civs of that time appear where they should.

Oh, so it's impossible to both let the player decide which civs to use and to have them start in the historically correct positions? By labeling each civ's coordinates when you listed them before, I assumed that meant those were their actual fixed locations. Sorry for my ignorance, I'm completely new to Civ IV modding of any sort.

Anyway, I'll continue to use this great map regardless.

Oh, & regarding the coordinates, they've had some changes due to the last improvements of the map. The current ones are:

I was digging through my old, salvaged archives, almost three years after a terrible happening (physical damage to my laptop that made it unusable). Turns out I DO have a usable version of the GEM, in advanced stage. I intend to get it ready for use rather soon. The GEM completion schedule is as follows:

* This weekend: program starting locations (now I know how to do it!). Beta for will be available for me to share personally upon announcement.

* June 2014: iron out all geographic kinks and especially resource distribution. I plan having two variants: pre-Columbian exchange, post-Columbian exchange. Public beta available and meant to upload on CivFanatics

* July 2014: have some scenarios ready for testing, complete blank map should be available.
