In January 2008 I'll be spending a couple of weeks on holiday in New Zealand. Mostly south-island.

My knowledge on New Zealand is limited. What I need is some good tips for activities to do, sights to see and things to experience.
What would you advise people going to the NZ south-island to do ?

(1 thing We'll certainly do is Whale watching).

Apart from the usual suspects (whale watching in kaikoura, visiting the milford Sound) we did some kayaking in the Abel Tasman National Park. I definately can recommend that, we had a great time there :)
We took two days paddling from kaiteriteri up to I-forgot-its-name and took the water taxi back.
My gf even claims to have seen orcas there (though they were gone by the time I turned around :suspicious: )

Looks nice.

i'm not sure, but you could probably do some hobbit-watching too :)

That has crossed my mind as well.

If you want adventure, then go to Queenstown. There is alway something to do in that city.
Thanks for the advise. I've checked out some websites and it looks nice.

I've heard that bungy-jumping is supposed to be good there.

I don't think bungee jumping will be on our agenda. We're not adrenaline junkies.

If i had to pick the best places to go in the country here they go:

Te Anau- bottem of the south island, cold but milford sounds is worth it. I went there on jamboree with scouts. This is the place they show on tv when showing the awesomeness of the country.

Queenstown: Close to te anau. skiing and shotover jet boating. (Get a white water rapid river, with hardly any water in it and then put a jet boat in it and go 1000kms per hour) plus 24 hour alchohol. Though if you arnt looking for excitement then maybe its not the right place to go.

kaikoura: See your whales.

Taupo & Rotorua: My favorite place. Two big tourist town siting on top of a volcano. Lake taupo is awesome just to swim in plus there is water skiing, bungy jumping ect. Taupo has a big water fall and craters of the moon, plus the worlds greatest toilet. Rotorua is smelly and has more volcanic things plus the big luge. If you like to bike ride, trying riding around lake taupo.

Tauranga: Pretty awesome beachs, best around new year. Party capital.

The citys:

Aucklands got: A big tower, a casino, a cool zoo, a fun park.
Wellingtons got: A big museum, a cable car, ummm... parliament... Me!
Christchurchs got:....... ........
Dunedins got: Tons of students and the worlds steeps streets.

But really the citys arnt the highlights of the country, you got all the city things in Europe for alot cheaper. oh also not really important for a guy from the netherlands but we now have Legal prostitues and if you want to marry a dude its legal here as well!!

Thank you.

I don't believe 1000 kms per hour :p
That's the second advise for Queenstown, so we'll certainly look for Queenstown info.

kaikoura: See your whales.
And Orca's - I hope...

That's the North island, right? Then it must be really worthwhile since we're not sure we're going there. Unless it is really really special.

Sounds like a university city/town.

Nah - cities are ok, but not to travel half way round the world for. The legal prostitutes are not something I have to travel far for - just 5 miles and I'll be in the Nijmegen red-light district. Marrying a dude I can do here as well. And I don't thing my newly wed wife would appreciate it if I'd marry someone else on our honeymoon.

good decision, the citys are boring sydney is better. BTW iv seen orcas in wellington harbour on more than one decision. I dont know if taupo is worth going to the north island for if your not planning to go there anyway, but it sure is awesome. te anues got a cool lake but its gone to be pretty cold.

Do you like tribal crap cause theres some awesome maori shows in rotarua (but probably in queens town too), some angry young guys do a haka in maori cloths at you, made to scare tourists and then they take you for a big feed. I went to it in rotarua for my mums weding. There have been a few cases where some tourists smile or laugh at the dancing maoris and get there face opened up with a taiaha, so dont smile!

Another thing, if you like movies go and hire out Once Were Warriors when ya get here, its awesome.

Bah, why bother with New Zeeland? Just come to Norway, it's currently summer and it's got all the same things as New Zeeland (well appart from the sheep).

Nobody - Yeah I'd like a Māori welcoming ceremony (Pōwhiri ?). And we'll try to avoid the use of taiaha...

ArneHD: it'll be winter when we're travelling (Dec '07 & Jan '08).

Any advise on places to sleep? We're quiet fond of the Bed & Breakfast system. Is that possible in New Zealand?
And transportation? Is it 'best' to just hire a car and travel using that or is there a good system of public transport or something else ?

Ah yes, you told me you were getting married. I forgot about it. Congratulations, Rik!!! :goodjob:

I get sick of powhiri's because all through school we had a million of the things, with school culture groups (kapahaka) dancing. Had them for everything, you cant open a out house in new zealand with consultation, a powhiri, and a free breakfast for marare leaders. But the ones put on for Tourists are cool.

There are bed and breakfast places in new zealand, but i cant advise any because i just stay at relatives houses when i go about. (or a tent on jamboree)

There are scenic trains that go up and down the islands, i dont know how the compare to the rest of the world and you do get to "see the country" but when i went on one from wellington to taupo i found it horribly boring, small and stuffy. But if you rent a car and drive yourself you could stop at any sights ya want to see yourself. Or maybe even some tourist bus thing if ya like that sort of thing.

heres a example, back in january i went up to auckland to watch the wwe with my. We could have flown up in 30 minutes, which is quick.
If we had gone by train it would have been a long ride and we would have been stuck with strangers
But we took the cheaper route, we drove up and got to stop in taupo to swim in the lake, and then drive through and see sights. (like the giant L&P bottle in paeroa:

and waitangi where i had been (Important treaty was signed here). Driving like a maniac we got to auckland alot faster than a train.

Find a nice beach and have a barbeque. I'm in Dunedin in the SOuth sland. Theres alot of wildlife here and up the coasts- whales, seals, dolphins, penguins etc. Theres also a steam trains.

Queenstown is regarded as nice but it a bit touristy. I would recommend central Otago at that time of year. 30+ degrees celsius alot of the time and fresh summer fruit you can buy fromthe orchards. Alot of vineyards as well.

Look up Queenstown, Wanaka, Alexandra, Cromwell online somewhere and various hydro lakes at that time of the year.

Also the Waitaki Valley. I grew up near there.

Central Otago seems very empty. 14.466 inhabitants only. What does it offer, besides fruit and wine?

Wanaka:  at Puzzling World and The Paradiso. Shame we'll miss Warbirds over Wanaka as we'll be long home by Easter.
Not sure about Alexandra or the Waitaka Valley.

What about a New Zealand CFC get-together? :mischief:

Waitaki Valley and central Otago have their own micro climate. Hottest part of the country in Summer. I went over there a few years ago. 37 degrees centigrade, 29 degrees at 10pm at night.
