JFD's Rise to Power

Whoa, looks fascinating! Intriguing that they are going to be founded as Founder bonuses, kind of handily solves the problem of there not being enough of those while also keeping the religions that don't get the institutions a bit of shove in capability, albeit in a simpler and less diplomacy-intensive way.

Hopefully the AI has a clue on how to do this stuff ^^

Of course the A.I. won't have any clue, but choices are either made for it (using some basic algorithm, usually based upon their religious intolerance level + a bit of randomness), or designed in such a way that they generally come naturally (such as with general piety generation). Where the A.I. is a bit disadvantaged by its ignorance (such as with the Caliphate), they'll be given a helping hand.

I've sort of had no energy for modding lately, so delaying P&P for the Papal States update and for institutions is just delaying it indefinitely. I've also determined that releasing with Institutions straight away is probably not the best way to gauge a basic experience of the system, but I'll release the Patriarchate before the end of the month. The only other thing not working as intended is support for the Spanish and Arabic decisions, which I'm not presently fussed to get working. Otherwise, Piety & Prestige released:

Piety (and Prestige)

Special Thanks to Whoward, Sukritact, Janboruta, and Leugi

"The office of the sovereign, be it a monarch or an assembly, consisteth in the end for which he was trusted with the sovereign power, namely the procuration of the safety of the people, to which he is obliged by the law of nature, and to render an account thereof to God, the Author of that law, and to none but Him. But by safety here is not meant a bare preservation, but also all other contentments of life, which every man by lawful industry, without danger or hurt to the Commonwealth, shall acquire to himself."

Overview

Piety and Prestige is a mod which aims to expand upon the immersive-experience of Civilisation V, by introducing a State Religion (Piety) and a Government (Prestige) mechanism.

Current features:
  • Core Piety component

Coming in a future update:
  • Religious Institutions
  • Effect of the World Religion resolution
  • Balance Patch
  • Prestige component

Piety

State Religion

The core feature of Piety is the introduction of a State Religion. State Religions have been core features of the legitimacy of empires for centuries - and in some cases, still are - and that they were not carried over from CIV was a grave blow to the immersion-seekers of the franchise. From the civilopedia page:

Spoiler :

Piety

Piety is a new pseudo-yield introduced as a measurement of the strength of your State Religion. Much like City-State influence, Piety is a value that degrades over time. From the civilopedia page:

Spoiler :

The core features of your Piety level are its effects upon your relationship with other civilisations, with the cost of purchasing items with faith, and with the natural conversion rate of your citizens. In addition, your piety level will effect the likelihood of Positive or Negative Religious Events (events with outcomes that are more or less favourable), as well as the rewards your receive from religious decisions.

Religious Institutions

Religious Institutions are a way to make the most out of Piety. By founding/creating/claiming one of the five Religious Institutions in the game, you can gain additional bonuses for having high piety - in exchange for greater penalties for having low piety (although the Caliphate works a bit differently to this). Religious Institutions will also unlock additional, unique Decisions and Events, giving more utility to Faith, Gold, and Piety. The planned Institutions are the Papacy (Diplomatic bonuses), the Caliphate (Militaristic and Scientific bonuses), the Patriarchate (Defensive bonuses), Imperial Cult (Localised Production and Food bonuses), and the Mandate of Heaven (Cultural and Gold bonuses). From the civilopedia page:

Spoiler :
:p

Note that Religious Institutions will not be included in the initial release.

Events and Decisions

  • 18 new State Religion specific events
  • 10 new Pagan specific events
  • 8 State Religion specific decisions
  • Some events and/or decisions for vanilla and custom civilisations adapted to the new systems

Balance Changes

  • Three new resources which yield faith added: Saffron (Grassland), Obsidian (Jungles), and Lotus (Lakes)*
  • Piety tree overhauled (see in-game); now unlocked at the Classical Era*
  • Solomon's Temple added; grants a free Great Prophet *
  • The Pantheon added; grants the pantheon belief of the second majority religion in your empire*
  • Hagia Sophia changed; Great Works now yield +1 Faith*
  • Monastery changed; now comes at Theology and has two Monk specialist slots*
  • Grand Temple moved to Philosophy*
  • Pantheon cost no longer increases with each pantheon founded*
  • Great Prophet cost slightly increased
  • Great Prophet may be expended for Piety

*included in the Balance Patch

Currently, the mod isn't compatible with Gazebo's Community Patch (causes the game to CTD). I don't know why this is, and I doubt I'll be able to fix the conflict on P&P's end.

If you use EUI, I recommend disabling the TopPanel.lua folder in Steam\SteamApps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization V\assets\DLC\UI_bc1 to view your Piety Per Turn on the top Panel (should work fine with Health & Plague), though this isn't essential. You will need to disable the CityView.lua file in P&P, however, which can be found in \MODS\JFD's Piety and Prestige Balance Patch (v 1)\Lua\Overrides

I'll detail instructions for adding support for State Religion or Piety within other mods in the future (and generally tidy the OP), but the more advanced modders can probably figure it on their own by discerning how Norway, Scotland, Armenia, or Hungary do it for their events, decisions, and uniques.

Oh, and, until the Prestige component reworks how one gets Magistrates from E&D, adopting a State Religion grants you an extra three.

omg that new Hagia Sophia effect. I love it!

Looks like this is gonna be a great mod. Between you, Sukritact's E&D and all of the fine New Civ modders, I won't need to buy a new Civ game for years :D.

Fantastic! Now I'll always know when my P&P is up to date. :D And I'll join the choir and say: take your time, no need to force yourself and make half-hearted effort. I've bounced off off both playing Civ 5 recently, felt burnt out with it and a bit bored, so I guess I can relate.

But anyway, glad to have P&P out officially. It's a brilliant component that is pretty much indispensible and irreplaceable in my Civ games. Hope more people will get to know it and use it in the future.

I need to report a bug: I'm playing as Norway and have founded my state religion, I have three cities, and two of them constantly pump out prophets. Every turn. I've also adopted an ideology.

Update: It suddenly stopped, and I haven't done anything special. Hm, weird. It lasted for approximately 10 turns.

Update 2: It seems the AI also recieves wave after wave of prophets, as most of them have more Holy Sites than one would normally expect to be possible.

Update 3: Aaand now it happens to me again. I think it might have something to do with the Monk specialists.

Been giving it a try. Can't say much balance-wise due to my very isolated start. Though I was playing as MC's Tibet, turning me into a faith-powerhouse, still, civs seem to get their religions quickly (temple of solomon really helps).
Very few bugs so far, and I'm playing with quite few mods, the only problem so far is that the UI for the religion viewer is a bit bugged: when viewing my religion, I can only see the bonus of my pantheon, and I can't save up for anything: it only gives me the option to "remind me later" and "save up for great prophet". I can still purchase for faith in cities though.

Furthermore I'd like to add that the music when someone founds a religion gave me massive pangs of nostalgia :D.

HHHHNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGHH

I will love this so much.
Thank you, for your efforts! Honor, for your vision!
All the best

Sweet! I am curious how this interacts with Reform and Rule if both extensively change the Piety tree. Or is the non-balance version that only works?

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, but the game crashes when Cultural Diversity and the DLL thing are both active at the same time, meaning I can't use Piety and Prestige.

Janboruta reported this a few times, too. I'll remove the Great Prophet generation from Monks and have them generate an extra Faith. Amounts the same thing, I suppose.

This mod will overwrite the changes made by R&R to the piety tree, but will otherwise work fine with it.

When does it crash? At the loading screen, sometime in game, or as soon as you try and load the mods?

I hope people are enjoying Piety for what it is, and that it adds an extra layer of depth to your in-game worlds as is intended. I'll be working on the belief revisions before I continue work on the institutions, and I need my ideas for Prestige to settle before going much further with that. The revision is mostly intended to add new ideas, and to refresh the beliefs to my own preference, rather than attempt to balance them.

I also have to decide how exactly to handle institution beliefs - whether to make them Founder beliefs or whether to recycle the Reformation belief mechanic to serve such a function (moving the current Reformation beliefs around the Founder, Follower, and Enhancer beliefs); gaining a Reformation/Institution belief is intended to be shifted out of the Piety finisher somehow regardless. Stalwart opposition would make this decision easier :p

Heck yes! Best mod release since E&D! And it's gonna become much bigger than it already is! I AM HYPE!
