GOTM 173 spoiler

catalin72, I created a spoiler thread and moved your entry from the game thread to the spoiler thread. Please do not reveal info that was gained after you start playing, in the game thread. That is what the spoiler thread is for.

I finished the map after 1500 AD,I don't know for this size the year for restarts stopped.

4000 BC

One settler moved a tile,a hut revealed,Finder shows seed 2X.Searching for specials,I saw a tile with 4 specials few tiles distance.Settlers moved,bad surprise,tile is jungle...,irrigation 15 turns.First hut a none horseman.
3850 BC
Berlin founded in jungle tile,a tile need to mining to reveal a special.
Not have all moves in a text file, not have time for this,I play other games online...
Map have a small number of AI players,in my game just a restart, having MPE map obtained, unfortunately new civ is in other island, but I have a coastal city in that island from a hut and diplomats from ice borders comes to help after clearing some huts with a trireme.
Barbarians in my game more activity,my luck was more leaders captured,100g,100g,etc.
A coastal city from AI captured by barbarians,my diplomat bribes 2 barbarian archers,price for city(size 6) is over 300 gold,too much,they capture the city,killing a new leader,very good 100 gold:).
War with orange AI was started in 500 BC,reason a horseman closing the road for my settler going to make a city in a good position, tribute demanding,my chariot kills that horseman.
Orange AI eliminated with chariots, legions, horsemen and diplomats in 560 AD,Hanging Gardens captured, but more cities in revolt, having over 6 cities the limit in monarchy for medium size map keeping 'strange' luxury rate 20 % for monarchy.New civ restarted(3 cities) eliminated with crusaders and few barbarian horsemen bribed near AI capital.Last old AI civ,a weak civ,a small commerce with they, cities just size 3 and short distance, having 2 cities, third new city maked late destroyed, size 1,.They paid tribute few times, when treasury become 50 gold, they declare war.Eliminated with crusaders from a caravel and a crusader from an ex-orange city.
After Statue, communism, game finished in this government.

Wonders:Colossus,HG(captured),Pyramids,MPE,Mike,C Obs,Leo,Statue.
Cities:24(3 from huts),population 5 350 000,game finished in 1680 AD.
Good luck all with this map ! :)

Things are looking good so far. After the desastrous #172, I went back to my usual style: Peaceful expansion, try to find a good SSC-site, expand more, try and so on... It will probably be landing, but it will be hard to do this early, without a key civ.

Resource seed is 6, 22 or 54; southern whale is top of a 4-special-site

-4000 Berlin founded, move west, discover hut, seed 22 or 54
-3950 Horse from hut, moving south
-3850 Leipzig founded; take a look at top5 and only China is in
-3800 Burial->Alph
-3650 Buffalo @ 66,18 tells us seed is 22; nice SSC-Location @ 77,23(whale, wheat, hidden pheasant on river); Greeks are also in
-3550 Nomads from mountain hut, excellent
-3500 Alph->Bronze;
-3450 Nomads starts foresting pheasant, we will keep him
-3400 Advanced tribe (Hamburg) @65,29
-3250 Horse from hut
-3100 Bronze->Laws; Archer (will be needed to be rehomed)
-2950 Königsberg founded at SSC-site
-2850 Weeds in hut
-2800 25g from htu
-2750 Frankfurt founded
-2700 Laws->Monarchy(60); München founded from nomads, Ouch, riot factor!
-2650 We have a horse "near Peking"
-2550 50g from hut; 29 beakers done
-2400 Barb horse from hut -> we kill it; 52 beakers done
(Barbs disembark near München - luckily on island 6)
-2250 Mon(revolt&est.)->Currency; Advanced tribe (Heidelberg, close to china), nice, but I had other plans for my next (and only riot-facor-unaffected) city
-2200 Discover that the horse southeast is near Peking->Now we know roughly the the chinese are

Stats at 2000BC:
pop.: 130k; Cities: 7; techs: 5; gold: 126; Gov.: Mon; wonders: -; TR: 0D/0F
units: 4 settler, 6 warrior, 1 Archer, 2 horse,
Goals: Expand, find rivals

-1950 Nürnberg founded Barb archer on the map - ruch phalanx in Heidelberg
-1850 Curr->Trade; pop hut and meet chinese, sign peace, they offer masonry, we gamble and get ... masonry! Only choice. We also learn that they are at war with greeks and get a nomad from that hut
-1750 Check if china has a new tech, obviously not, demand tribute, get none; Attack barb archer with warrior to hurt him before he attacks, lose but archer is almost dead, that's nice
(Barb Archer dies attacking)
-1650 Köln founded; barb leader vanishes in known territory... unfortunate
-1550 HBR from hut, not good
-1450 Huts: Chariot + Advanced tribe (Hannover)
-1400 Trade->pottery
(China destroyed by Greeks; Barb Archer dies attacking)
-1350 Barb leader 100g; Bremen founded
-1250 Stuttgart founded
(Meet Greek horse, sign peace, obviously do not have any techs for us)

units: 5 settler, 15 warrior, 4 phalanx, 1 Archer, 2 horse, 1 chariot, 2 vans
Goals: Expand, find rivals, Marco Polo & HG

-975 Marco Polo built, Americans and Greeks are in, nobody has techs we don't have...not even mapmaking or warrior code...

Can someone arrest Major please? I think he stole all my hut luck for this game...

GOTM173: Christmas is here, and so is my free time. Civ2 it is.
Grass nearby, and 2 whales. A harbour as well, so I have a gut feeling that my homeland will be rather hospitable for growth. I’m feeling the spaceship itch… but only a normal-sized map with 5 civs. We’ll see!
Huh. Black Clicking seems to show that we are on a smallish island. (Post-game edit: LEL.) Probably need to go Mon > MM > Trade. Darnit… I hate managing shipchains.

4000 BC: Move settler west. OH, HELLO! Hut sighted. Buuuut we won’t wait to settle because the starting island seems to be small. Berlin built.
3950 BC: > Alphabet. Hut popped: Archers. That’s a unit I won’t be able to get for free.
3900 BC: The only spot available to use up a whale is on a hill… darnit!
3800 BC: Hut popped: Horseman. Warrior in Berlin, will build settler next.
3750 BC: Alphabet > Code of Laws. Quite rough terrain SW of Berlin.. except for that river. Dead end reached west, but already new lands are sighted. No wait, it’s still landmass 5. K, I need to expand south then.
3650 BC: Start irrigating a city site near Berlin. 5 turns to cut down the forest. (Postgame edit: wasting that much time for the sake of optimal city placement is not a very good idea...)
3600 BC: New land sighted North of Berlin. Landmass 1!
3500 BC: RB 8s in Berlin. Archer disbanded in Berlin: new settler in 3 turns. Might as well do the size 1 trick then. Oh wait, Berlin’s already size 2. I’m dumb.
3400 BC: Hut: Archers. Leipzig built at (76, 20)
3300 BC: Code of Laws > Map Making.
3150 BC: LOTS of rivers down south. Hut: Pottery. Dangit man…
3050 BC: Hambourg built on hill at (71.11) Oddly enough the city already has 3 shields in its box.
2850 BC: BARBS NEAR BERLIN. Warrior is RB’d for 16g. Hut: 50g. Hut: Nothing.
2800 BC: Berlin warrior will sit on (75, 15) and stay idle for ever and ever and ever and ever and… yeah. Better than losing all my cities. Dang boat’s too dumb to just move a square.
2750 BC: Map Making > Cerem Burial. Techrate 12 turns. Pretty sure Monarchy is in tech group 2.
2700 BC: Hut: Barbs! They peace out.
2600 BC: Leipzig settlers.
2500 BC: Konigsberg built at (78,26)
2450 BC: Hut: More barbs. This time they do not spare us.
2400 BC: Hut: More barbs… 3 squares from Konigsberg. WTF?!?!? According to Samson’s research, It’s supposed to be 4 squares minimum! Lost all of my exploring units. I’m kinda boned…
2250 BC: Ceremonial Burial > BW, Monarchy not available… guess I misunderstood. Tech group 0!
2100 BC: Hambourg Trireme.
2000 BC: Hut: Chariot. That helps… but Koni’s in a poor spot for unit support. Still 12 turns a tech.

Status at 2000 BC:
Cities: 4 Techs: 5 (currently researching BW) Government: Despotism Revenue:4 Cost: 0 Gold: 79 T4L0S6
Units: 2 settlers, 6 Warriors, 1 Trireme, 1 Chariot.
Nothing else of note, other than the 2 settlers will settle soon, but that’s the end of that wave. Will start building a wonder in Berlin soon. Homeland’s a lot bigger than I thought it would be, but I don’t regret disbanding the archers. Just bad luck so far on huts, I say.
1950 BC: Francfort built at (74, 6) as an offshore city. Konigsberg looks OK as an SSC. NOTE TO SELF: (74, 22) has a hidden special.
1900 BC: Munich built at (71, 23) He be mad! Berlin starts HG.
1850 BC: Kill murderous Barb horse near Konigsberg: warrior vet.
1800 BC: Meet Chinese warrior. Peace, no tech trade. OH WAIT, forgot to apply the hostility patch. BRB.
1750 BC: BW > Monarchy. We are Supreme, as expected. Patch doesn’t… Work… I’m not sure if I understand it properly so I’ll request tech assistance on the GOTM boards. (Postgame edit: Got a patched .exe from another source. Works OK except that the Find City function is bugged, swaps the game to “nil” difficulty instead of actually working and everything goes haywire. Dunno.)
1700 BC: Meet Greek horseman. Peace. Apparently they are at war with the Chinese.
1600 BC: Civil disorder in Leipzig. Hut: HBR. Techrate 15 turns.
1500 BC: Hut: Nomads! That’s more like it.
1450 BC: Hut: Archers.
1400 BC: Hut: Barbs, killed for vet.
1350 BC: Disband Konigsberg warrior to avoid shield shortage as settler is built.
1300 BC: Heidelbourg built at (82, 22) Hut: AT of Nuremberg at (51, 5) That Trireme is paying dividends.
1250 BC: Oedo year is 1050 BC. Cologne built at (65, 13) Black hat! Still far away from Trade… Hanover built at (62, 6) Many cities need entertainers. Techrate 8 turns.
1150 BC: Brême built at (75, 31) And that’s the end of the 3rd wave. 11 cities so far.
1100 BC: Monarchy > Currency. REVOLUTION. T1L6S3. The Barb trireme near Berlin has despawned! Hallelujah.avi.
1050 BC: Monarchy established. T3L0S7, techrate 8 turns.

Status at 950 BC:

Can someone arrest Major please? I think he stole all my hut luck for this game...

Sorry about that. I thought you wouldn't need it ... ;)

Things went on pretty well during the next 100 years, except for missing Lighthouse and the fact that nobody had any techs whatsoever when I had built Marco Polo. And my SSC losing a trade route early in the game because of city disappearance. On the plus-side, the Americans respawned on a different continent, ka-ching!

-975 Marco Polo built, Americans and Greeks are in, nobody has techs we don't have...not even mapmaking or warrior code...
-950 Pot->Mapmak.;
-925 Nomads
-900 HG built
-825 Salzburg, Dortmund founded
-775 Mapm->Writing; Get maps from America(offshore, on cont.2) and Greeks. Is there a safe passage towards america (maybe hugging the poles) or do we need LH? There also is a lake #4...need to be scouted
(Greeks start Colossus, but they won't get it done in 3 turns)
-750 Advanced tribe (Brandenburg)
-725 Büffelhausen founded
-675 Königsberg builds Colossus - Greeks switch to LH; supported horse from hut; kill two barb units heading for Brandenburg
-650 Dresden, Rostock founded
-625 Hildesheim founded
(Greeks are about to finish LH...)
-600 Writ.->Myst.; First delivery, demanded hides for 12g...heavy riots, maybe we shouldn't have any more cities until Michelangelo
(Athen Lighthouse)

Stats at 500BC:
pop.: 760k; Cities: 20; techs: 12; gold: 24; Gov.: Mon; wonders: HG, MPE, Colossus; TR: 0D/1F
units: 5 settler, 20 warrior, 7 phalanx, 1 Archer, 4 horse, 1 chariot, 2 boats, 6 vans
Goals: Monotheism and Michelangelo

-475 Myst.->Lit.;
-350 Cannae founded (on cont. 2)
-325 Lit.->Poly;
-275 Philo from hut(cont.1), not bad; construction from hut(cont.2), this will delay mono...not sure by how much
-250 Poly->Mono;
-200 None-archer from hut in America;
-175 1st real delivery Königsberg->Washington hides(u) for 172
(Greeks begin Pyramids, we could use them as well)
-150 Mono->medicine
-125 Michelangelo built; nomads north of America, barbs from polar hut
-100 Math from hut, could have gotten it from Greeks
-75 100g from hut; Göttingen, Potsdam founded
(Barbs capture Greek Shanghai, I am about to deliver a van there ...)
-50 Genua founded; van delivered anyway for 136 (nearest hides-demander was too far away); Medicine from hut, excellent! Well, almost, the sixth van for Shakespeare is not done yet...
-25 Research Republic;
(Greeks destroy Barb Shanghai - Königsberg and Heidelberg both lose a trade route)
+1 Pyramids built(Greeks switch to GW); Nomads in America, Republic from hut! Was planning to discover it in 60AD...

Stats at 1AD:
pop.: 1.25M; Cities: 24; techs: 21; gold: 82; Gov.: Mon; wonders: HG, MPE, Colossus, Michelangelo, Pyr; TR: 0D/1F

Goals: Shakespeare next turn; Rep in 60AD, more expansion, more trade, bridgebuilding and road network, is KRC worth building? I never did until now...

On the plus-side, the Americans respawned on a different continent, ka-ching!

900 BC: Greeks warn us to leave city of Canton… wait what? Barbs disembark near Francfort, horse kills the stack. Stuttgart built at (66, 26)

850 BC: Currency > Trade.

825 BC: Hut: Settlers, on a faraway continent. Leipzig settlers, starts LH as a placeholder.

750 BC: Bonn built at (31, 29)

675 BC: Trade > Masonry.

650 BC: 2 vans built. My pace of expansion is VERY slow. The map is very linear.

625 BC: Salzbourg built at (84, 28)

600 BC: 3 cities start rioting. Van in Berlin: HG will be done next turn. Van in Leipzig: 123s left for Pyramids. Hut near Thermopyles: Masonry. Thanks nerds.

575 BC: >Writing. Berlin HG! Pyramids will be done in 7 turns.

500 BC: Barbs near Salzbourg! Kill one of them, archer vet. Un-fortified, it’a 33/67 for a size 1 city…
Interturn: Archer survives. Yessir!

475 BC: Writing > Mysticism. I’m getting some black hats on size 2’s. Dortmund built at (79, 35)
Interturn: Greeks tell us to leave Athènes.

450 BC: 2 vans. No enemy civ seems to have started the wonder race… Greeks seem to be our main rivals.

425 BC: Van in Leipzig: 52s left. Hut: Seafaring. Hut: 50g. Brandenbourg built at (58, 10)

400 BC: Van in Leipzig: Pyramids next turn. Don’t really care for MPE since most powerful civ is on my landmass and I foresee a war soonish. Need to expand first. I’m behind popwise.Naples built at (69, 17) not exactly the best build site but I hate seeing holes unplugged in my city grid.

375 BC: LEIPZIG PYRAMIDS. Snagging both Pyramids and HG usually means you win by sheer pop, even before Republic. Issos built at (59, 17)

350 BC: Berlin starts MPE. Barb leader killed for 100g.
Interturn: Barbs near Dortumund.

300 BC: Hut: Nomads. Near Athènes as well. Hummm… Kill 1 Barb horse near Dortmund, but take a ton of damage in the process: I’ll need another one, so disband the hurt horsie to RB another one.

275 BC: Mysticism > Literacy. Hut: Construction.

250 BC: Cunaxa built at 85, 17. 126s in Berlin.

225 BC: Germans most powerful. It seems like there are only 3 players in the map?!? Chinese: 100g. Give a bunch of techs to the Greeks, they share maps at Worshipful. They only have 6 cities. Beijing is shown on the map, they don’t appear to have a second city. No use going for LH, better Marco’s to doublecheck. That would explain why no one started a wonder: The Greeks are gungho and the Chinese are fighting for survival.

200 BC: Colossus started in Konigsberg. Cremona built at (55, 21). Cannae built at (23, 53) as a safe base for the Greeks. Hut: Barbs. RIP Chariot.

175 BC: A bunch of cities riot, as a critical riot factor key is hit. Chinese: Warrior Code.

125 BC: Berlin MPE. Confirmed, only 3 civs in game! Settler pops a hut: get… settlers. Capoue built at who cares, I’ll stop noting coords. Turin built.

100 BC: Gênes built. Techrate 9 turns. 16/20 techs, ow…

75 BC: Hut: Settlers.

50 BC: Literacy > Polytheism. Hut: 50g. Vérone built. Salamis built. Hut: Mathematics. Pls with the offpath techs... Dresden built. Lisbonne built.

1 AD: Hut: Settlers.

I think things went a little better over here. In this segment, techs and wonders came along nicely, but expansion was a little poor... the terrain was mostly poor as well, but in hindsight, there were still a lot of spots that could have done with cities...

So that was a way to do it: the Greeks eliminate the Chinese and cause an American re-spawn in a new world with higher trade bonuses.

That didn't happen here, I got behind the other games reporting. Major's game gets further out of sight at each status check, even before the Americans begin to play a part. Last post was to 1000BC.

Maybe my game was good after all, did not feel like that when I was playing, but having read your logs... It felt good about trade and tech progress, but rather bad concerning expansion. I still think I could have done better, there was a lot to expand to...

So, opening the next round of logs (and presenting my new signature, we just won in a historic landslide victory over Spain!). Nice was having bypassed the "dry years" between railroad and corporation completely. Not nice was not getting demo in an odeo year, which didn't seem possible and demo was kind of pressing.

I just finished playing GOTM173. With the size of the map and the lack of a key civ, I decided to go for conquest and hope for good luck on the respawns. I will post more info (and logs) later, but I had a couple of strange situations that I wonder if anyone else has seen before.

In my game Beijing was conquered by Barbarians in 2350 BC (In the top 5 cities in RED). I finished off the Chinese 275 BC. The Persians respawned on Continent 2. I had just gotten a nomad on Continent 2, so I was able to build a city nearby. I killed the first iteration of Persians in 175 BC. The Persians respawned again. Since I had MPE, I immediately contacted them and exchanged maps (after tech gifts). I could see a stack of units at 17,35,2. I could only see the 'city-sized' radius around the units. But when I clicked 'end-of-turn', I saw the units in 17,35,2 move, but I also saw something move in the black space to the northwest of the city. I contacted the Persians on the next turn and got their map again. There was a stack of units (topped by a settler) to the NW of Persepolis (which was founded at 17,35,2). When I finished the game I reloaded the save game from 175 BC and used the cheat mode to see the entire map. The Persians actually got 2 settlers and a phalanx in 17,35,2. But they also got 2 additional settlers at 12,30,2.

I conquered the Greeks in 150BC. The English respawned at 88,72,5. This was quite a few squares away from the Greek cities that now belonged to me, so the army had a long hike. I finally destroyed London (and the English) in 180 AD. The Greeks respawned. Again, I immediately contacted the Greeks and traded maps. I could see a stack of units at 8,58,2. But when I moved a diplomat that was close to the former location of London, there was a Greek settler at 91,71,5. This was even more strange.

So, has anyone else ever seen respawns that spanned different locations and even different continents?

520 AD: Hut: Mercenaries. Heidelbourg II built. Nuremberg II built.
Interturn: Barbs show up near undefended colony. 50g.

540 AD: Nothing of note.

560 AD: Sell Temple as I accidentaly overspend (barbs at the gates!). Cologne II built.

580 AD: Barbs take Hambourg II despite having enough cash to offer tribute. Well, that didn’t work… maybe the formula changes with the amount of cities you have?!? Weird. Will stop celebrating next turn, core just hit size 8. Share maps with Americans: They are on continent 5… Seems like a delayed EC to me. Hanovre II built.

600 AD: T3L4S3. Celebrations over, but lots of unrest still makes for an inflated LUX%

640 AD: Don’t think I can delay JS Bach’s much, if at all. Colonies are having troubles keeping the peace. The sad thing about blue civs is it’s really hard to see on the world map which areas you’ve populated, since the blue rectangles blend in unfortunately well with the map. Konigsberg size 10, the city has so much trade it’s still going. But no food left.

660 AD; Astronomy > Feudalism. Note to self: Heidelbourg supplies Dye, which Konigsberg requests. Critical path is already done, so get on it. Techrate 7 turns.

680 AD: Brême II built. Hut: Legion.
Interturn: Greeks take Barb city of Hambourg II.

700 AD: Stuttgart II built.

740 AD: Heidelbourg silk (d) to Konigsberg: 96g. Hut: Iron Working.

760 AD: Konigsberg library, starts Cope’s. 150s left. Bonn II built.

780 AD: Feudalism > Theology.

820 AD: Nothing is happening in this game. Can’t trade bc no offshore partners, can’t expand because geographical constraints… Munich gold (d) to offshore Frankfurt: 258g. Ok, not bad! Only 11 squares away as well.

840 AD: Theo next turn: I’ll switch to JS Bach after making sure that I have 2 more vans ready. Salzbourg III built.
Interturn: Greeks develop Feudalism, start Sun Tzu’s.

860 AD: Theology > Banking. JS Bach will be done in 2 turns. I'll delay Cope's and I don't care.

880 AD: 2 vans in Konigsberg: Bach’s next turn. Dortmund II built.

900 AD: Konigsberg JS Bach’s. Starts Cope’s again. T4L3S3. Brandenbourg II built. Running out of hospitable build sites quickly in landmass 2! But the home continent was a lot bigger than expected. I was so wrong…

920 AD: Naples II built. Issos II built. Leipzig silk (d) to Nuremberg: 324g.

940 AD: Banking > Bridge Building.

960 AD: Van for 30g.

980 AD: Greeks declare war: I promptly steal The Wheel. I may or may not have goaded them in declaring war just so I could use up the waiting diplomat nearby.

STATUS AT 1000 AD:
Cities: 57 Pop: 13,460,000 Techs: 29 (currently researching Bridge Building) Government: Republic Gold: 222
WoWs: HG, Pyramids, MPE, Colossus, Mikes, JSB. Building Copes in SSC.
Foreign Officer:
War and Embassies with Greeks.
Americans just respawned: no contact yet.

I should have built that stagepoint city near Athens with my nomad… game’s gonna get quite long in game time. Fortunately not in IRL years since no van spam. But I’m really behind from my usual expansion pace bc no foreign trade partners, and I’m pretty sure that the CfCers are gonna figure another way around. Maybe I should have built Colossus in Frankfurt to get the offshore bonus over there and just dump vans… holy, I’m dumb. So far, SSC not really taking off since limited funds, so not really worth it. Been spending a lot on infrastructure like temples and ports.

Postgame edit: Might have overprioritized city building after my poor start expansion-wise. Really behind on wonder-building.

I started playing last night. I had decided apriori that I am playing OCC, mainly to catch up with the flow of the games.

I did map analysis and black clicking which made me realize that the nearby forest is on the coast and 3 specials. I was so much in hurry that I did not even notice the 4 special site nearby which most others headed for. In retrospect, of course, that was a good thing since it turns out it was on jungle.

The first hut was tipped before founding Berlin and the outcome was an archer. Horseman would have been better but I was happy to get a none unit and dreaded getting a tech. Hut luck was mediocre overall. No barbs, decent money, decent units, but two out of path techs (horseback riding and mysticism) early on (techs 2 and 4) which not only delayed Monarchy till -825 but more importantly delayed Trade so late that my place holder wonder (Oracle) for Marco had to be changed to Hanging Gardens at the last moment. By the time I discovered pottery and built the Hanging Gardens in -300 I had 305 shields in my production box. I soon realized that Marco was not really needed here due to there being only 2 rivals on the same land mass as ours but nevertheless 105 wasted shields is a lot particularly in an OCC game.

There are quite a few times during any OCC game when you have nothing useful to build (due to lack of prerequisite techs). The standard thing to do in those situations is to build vans, which you can never have too many of in an OCC game. But with Trade delayed till -25 I had to make unusual choices. Just look at what I have built by year +1: Temple, Granary, Marketplace, City walls, Colossus, Hanging Gardens. Exactly half of these (Granary, City walls, and Hanging Gardens) are extremely rare in OCC games.

Map analysis indicates that the forest is on the coast and 3 special. Resource seed is 6 or 22 or 54.
