is there a way to make civ4 compatible with win8

I have Civ IV and it works and I use windows 8.

Although I do use steam, maybe that does it?

I can't seem to play without the disk on windows 8, while I could on windows 7

Are you using BTS 3.19? That is the only version that can be played without the disc. Vanilla and Warlords always require the disc. If you are playing BTS, are you sure you are playing the upgraded version to 3.19?

if you have 'upgraded' to 8.1, remove windows security upgrade KB3086255.
game will load and run. so will many other windows XP games that were 'blocked' by this update.
don't forget to 'hide' it, else windows will automatically re-install it and you'll be back where you started.
