For most of them it kinda makes sense. You can't expect Hiawata standing in a palace, after all. For me the only vanilla leader whose background seems off is Oda.

Montezuma- 21 Rather terrifying to see his leaderscreen, but it captures the personality well. What is also scary is that the diplomacy is not private, it's public. Montezuma's subjects respond to Montezuma's every word with a clamour.

Napoleon- 14 - ok, Napolean, we get it. You're on a horse. In a dull background. I think it would have been better if France had a more attractive background, such as Napolean's palace. I know it's trying to portray Napolean as mostly outdoors and on the move but the ordinary foggy background subtracts a lot from this theme.

I love academic art and the painting this leader screen is based on. Unlike Hiawatha or Isabella, she actually poses as a person with power. The colors are great and the Hagia Sophia in the background is a beautiful touch.

The leader screens, especially the backgrounds, have greatly improved over time. Most leader screens of Vanilla are, well, vanilla. I could just as well go for Oda, Gandhi, Napoleon here, whose leader screens waste a chance to get a good first impression of the empire, but Alexander seems the most bland to me. Firaxis did a lot better with the expansion packs.

Hiawatha shouldn't just be standing in a forest. There should at least be an Iroquois village.

Although Oda is out in the middle of nowhere, that field just look brilliant. Reminds me of The Last Samurai.
