I dug through the threads here, but did not find any list of differences between civ1 DOS version and SNES version. So I decided to do the list myself.
I have played DOS version about 15 years ago a lot and SNES version for the past three months about dozen games, so there are probably errors and inaccuracies in the list.
Anyway here it is:
- No Zulus, instead Japanese
- City size max. 28
- No subvert city
- No very unhappy people
- Max. 32 future techs
- No stripe pattern on shield grasslands
- No pattern on special resources
- No random maps
- Earth map is different
- Different graphics
- No graphs at endgame
- No replays at endgame
- City squares get railroads automatically
- Some technology advances have different names
- Always able to advance a tech, when prerequisites are ready
- No fast settler bug
- No traveling around the world by unloading/loading two triremes
- No road/railroad on ocean squares
- No undefended city bug
- Cause destruction in capital destroys palace at third attempt
- Units from tribal huts are always none.
- No pollution bug
- Goddess chats at the beginning and the end
It seems to me Sid needed to sell civ1 for Nintendo and it was done by removing bugs and adding Japanese
