How to increase culture

I play immortal in BNW and in every game there is always two civs that by mid game are producing about three times the culture I am. No matter what I do I can not increase my culture until in the late game. Any suggestions on how to improve my culture? Thanks.

I should add that I build cultural buildings and specialists ASAP and fill my great works slots fairly quickly as well. I also try to ally one or two cultural city states as soon as I can.

Though some elements of it are not applicable in all games, this guide outlines the best strategy devised so far for winning a Cultural Victory on Deity.

What victory condition are you going for? For SV (probably Diplo and Dom as well), it is better to bulb your GWs and GAs. Also, cultural city state quests early on will signifcantly increase your culture.

This happens with all my victory paths, even a cultural victory. I never thought of bulging GAs early in the game, but it would give a boost to culture. Is that what the AI does?

I believe the AI mostly makes great works instead of bulbing their cultural Great People. I also am quite sure that the AI will use their cultural GPs immediately instead of saving up for a more valuable bulb.

Do the AIs get any added cultural bonus for the higher levels.

As you can see from this guide, the only bonus that really helps with culture directly is the reduced policy cost for the AI, which is set at 75% for all difficulty levels.

But the thing about Civ 5 is that all variables are interconnected, so the reduced unit cost, and the science buffs, etc, etc, means that they can progress faster, build culture buildings faster, and therefore improve their culture more.

There are two ways to overtake the AI in a Deity game. They are not mutually exclusive.

1. Concentrate on growing your cities, and improving science to the point where you leapfrog the AI and stay ahead of them with Public Schools, Oxford University, etc.

2. Conquer their cities.

If you fail to do either of these properly, at least one AI civ will always out-produce your culture just on the basis of their bonuses. In the recent CDG game as the Inca I left Pacal with one city and he still made enough culture for me to have to crush him because otherwise overcoming his lifetime culture was too high.

CityStates are one of the best sources of culture in the game

If your dirt has a lot of pastures then God of the Open Sky is crazy.

Sistine Chapel is also very rewarding.

Never forget to work the musician's guild. The slots offer insane amounts of culture during WF which gives you even stronger GW bulbs.

Actually more cities might end up hurting you because the pentalty for founding another city (especially without the Liberty policy) will hurt you a lot, especially late game when policies become very expensive. It might end up costing you 1 or 2 social policies across the board.

While it does increase actual culture output it won't help with Tourism since more population means more unhappiness.

I would go with Redaxes advice. The best source of culture is to just have all possible Cultural CS allied. And since CS allies don't scale with empire size they'll be more useful the smaller & taller your empire.

Play as Brazil. Tough it out until you get Machinery, then spam brazilwood camps and beeline Acoustics. Put hotels in all your cities and an airport in your capital.

Really the main thing to care about is getting allied with cultured city-states.
The culture they give you far outweighs what your cities can generate early-on.

So that means scouting the map as fast as you can and then checking to see what quests you can do. Once you get spies, steal 2-3 techs and then put them in the cultured city-states to attempt a coup or just to rig elections.

This by far is the best and cheapest way to increase your culture generation while at the same time denying it from the AI.

2nd is trying to win the world's fair. Again not only does it double your culture for 20 turns, but it also doesn't let the runaway AI double HIS.

3rd- Try to build the oracle. Most games if you build it before turn 90 you should get it. When you start it, watch the other capitals to see if any other AI has started building it.

4th- Build some archaeologists. If your culture sucks in the late-game you might be generating like 40-50 a turn. Antiquity sites can be worth 4-6 culture. Get 2-4 of them and you've just boosted your culture by 20-40% for much less than the build time of crappy culture buildings which I only ever build when going culture victory with the 50% discount from aestethics. Even then they're bad! +1 culture is so crap compared to what cultured city-states make, it's ridiculous.

This is some damn good advice. Too often I neglect the CSs
