Hi all, someone could explain me how to upgrade carriers ? they can not fight so they can have experience point.

Many thanks.

Barracks and armory in a city make any unit start with 2 upgrades. I've never really cared for more than 3 on a carrier anyway.

I dunno, I guess park it outside an warring opponent's city and let it get shot?

By the time I decide I need a carrier I have a city with barracks, armory, military academy and hopefully Brandenburg gate - so that my bombers have city 1 and 2 and air repair. For the carrier that also gets me the promos I want (+speed and sight) plus the first one.

On bombers I'd put 3x either city attack or unit attack, so the next promotion can be extra attack per turn.

yeah it's a choice as to what they're going to do isn't it. When I have the luxury of a good few I specialise but usually the first two get as above plus a fighter with the intercept promos.

New carrier: idea for last era:
upgrade to Super Carrier
- transport aircraft capacity +2
- Improved combat

After being built, getting EXP for the carrier seems to be based on getting hit. I find enemy submarines help out. :D

I wish that carriers got some EXP run-off from units that are based on it, even if it was only 5% at least it would be something.

I can't remember ever needing a carrier. I thought I did in one game, but by the time my carrier made it over, I had already won. Mostly a waste of space.

Carriers can be very useful on several occasions (projection of force, raids, coastal protection, nuclear attack). But I think they are very limited due to the low number of aircraft on board.

With +2 to Capacity, that gives me 4 aircraft to take with me. I've never really found a need to have more than that, nor any of the other promotions.

I use them to move aircraft across the map, or as a staging point until I have a city closer to where I'm fighting. Generally speaking, I play on Continents Plus, so projecting that kind of power has lots of uses.

Of course, it's also a handy having Atomic Bombs close by before Nuclear Missiles and Nuclear Subs. :satan:

I was thinking on this the other day and thought it would be great for allied City States to "grant you an airfield" where you can land a couple of aircraft. On the same token, it will just as easy for the AI to nuke your capital.

I'd be okay with allowing aircraft to land there, but not nuclear weapons. Then in the outbreak of war, enemy aircraft were "kicked out" and forced to re-base, or simply captured by the CS.

I miss being able to build an airfield, just like a fort. It's not unrealistic to build an airfield in the middle of nowhere for military purposes, especially on larger continents or Pangaea.

Oh I definitely think it would take some refinement, but I would look at the City States with a whole new fear if I thought there was a Nuke from Ghandi hiding in one.

But back to the discussion on hand, as anyone tried using weak barb Naval units to try and get some exp?

Love this idea. Would be great to see a Nimitz class or an Enterprise getting around the game with some Tomcats and / or Hornets on board. Has anyone made a modern carrier?
