A lot of the games I try to join in MP always say theres a problem with my or the hosts firewall does anyone know why this is and how to fix it?

If it happens alot, that is a sign that it is likely not everyone else but you. Do you have a router/firewall or software firewall?

I have Norton anti-virus would that count

Make sure you have port 2056 open on your firewall and forwarded to your ip by your router. Also, restarting Civ and holding down the Shift key while the game loads can help alleviate bad peer issues. Doing this will clear the cache.
