What's the point of leaving this critter alive ?

Killing it should give you a golden age, but sparing it ?

Any ideas ?

Ah, I found out:

Spoiler :
If you spared the stag and later forge the sword, Kylorin may use the Stag as a mount, spawning him as a cavalry unit with 3 movement points as opposed to one.

I didn't get the last part. Why will you need it except for the bonus

If Kyorlin is too slow, then Drifa the White Dragon can catch up with him.The Dragon is a 80 :strength: unit, so if it attacks Kyorlin he will probably kill him and thus make the game unwinnable.

(Note that AoI lacks a unitcombat_beast like FfH2, so Drifa is a Melee unit. This means that a few assassins can usually defeat Drifa)

But the dragon is easily lured by skeletons, floating eyes and so.
I protect Kyrolin with Mammoth Riders with 2xShock (since Drifta is a melee unit), and so they will take the blow for Kyrolin if attacked.

If you forge the blade in the Iilians Capital in the far north, you won't have a long way down to Mulcarn either. Should perhaps let Kylorin take out a couple of Frostlings to give him Mobility :) I found the end game a bit too easy. Wasn't a problem with the dragon wrecking havoc when you could take out Mulcarn on the other side of the map.

But I guess it has to be Kylorin to take out the Stag in order to ride it?
Or is Animal subduing an issue here?

No. When you defeat the stag it triggers an event giving you the option to kill it or let it go. If you kill it you get an instant bonus (golden age), and if you let it go Kyorlin will start as the mounted version of himself when you forge the godslayer. If you already have Kyorlin as a melee unit them it is too late.

(Actually, I think that when you choose to spare the Stag it is respawned on a random tile. You can kill it again, with the same event. If you ever choose the golden age, event it you spared the beast earlier, then you won't get a mounted Kyorlin.

IOW, chase the Stag in the midgame then. The Golden Age is pretty short though.

I just forged the Godslayer (too far away from Mulcarn, so now I've got a dragon chasing me all over the map), but despite sparing the Stag Kylorin shows up on foot. Does he need to capture the Stag himself or something? I was assuming/hoping that just sparing the Stag would mean Kylorin would spawn on a mount -- could definitely use those movement points to get to Mulcarn.

I've really enjoyed this scenario, though this endgame race against a unit that's faster and stronger than you (and strong enough that my assassins can't really do much to it) doesn't feel "right" -- the frantic chase across the map while throwing units in the dragon's way (which it seems to be going around to beeline for Kylorin) isn't as much fun as strategically taking out the opponents. If you know the dragon's coming, he may be easy to distract or destroy but if you don't, he's darn hard to avoid or beat and that's annoying this late in the scenario.

I doubt the scenario is ever quite as good as the first time; after that, you know most of the 'tricks'. The endgame is tough because you don't anticipate Drifa. If you got the stag, you probably don't need to worry, you can run past Drifa and sacrifice your existing units in distracting him. Clearly, in that case, the ability to move Kylorin 3 is worth more than the Golden Age. However, once you have played the scenario and know that Drifa is coming, it is totally different, and she isn't that hard to counter.

I agree completely, which is why I'm hoping to win the scenario this (first) time through -- knowing what I do now, it'd be much easier to win. But, for whatever reason, Kylorin spawned without the Stag, so he's losing the footrace against the dragon! I did spare the Stag, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I guess I could always go Worldbuild him in with his mount...

I spared the stag too and didn't get the mount when I forged the sword.
As for the dragon, he wasn't that bad. I just sent my army and killed him, since it appeared that I didn't need an army anymore...
A couple of highly-promoted units escorted the (slow) Kylorin through the whole map without encoutering bigger trouble than a few polar bears.

I got the stag (the 1st time I played) as a mount. Not sure why you didn't if ya spared him.

I suspect that some people may have saved the stag the first time, and then accidentally killed him later (he stills runs around the board I think) before bringing Kylorin in; I'm pretty sure I did this once.

Best wishes,

Breunor

Hmm...that makes sense.

I've only played the scenario through once and managed to kill the dragon with one of my assassins. I know that's not really relevant, but I'm kinda proud so thought I'd mention it anyway.

Was wondering about the Stag though, I didn't encounter it until after I'd reforged the sword, and then I spared it, so got nowt. I did kill the dragon though :)
