How many Fleets and what would each Fleet contain?

I say something like:

1 Battleship
1 Destroyer
1 Carrier w/ 3 Jet Fighters
1 Submarine w/ spy
1-3 Transports w/ Tanks and above

And maybe something like 3-4 Fleets total. Would that be enough to kick some butt in Civ 4. What do you think?

Well, i relay heavily on my navy!
In modern times i usually have 5-10 fleets, which are rather big ones:

4 Battleships
3 Destroyers
1 Carrier (optional)

I use submarines only for spying on my hated ones, and when war start i send them to destroy marine assets
In my previouse game i played as Roosvelt and my navy saved me 3 times from French invasions!

It really depends how long you've been in the modern era. The AI doesn't use navy extensively until the modern era has been in progress for some time, in my experience. I've played a few modern start games where this has been the case, and having a BIG navy has been essential when LARGE invasion forces arrive - I'm talking 5 or 6 destroyers and couple of battleships and 7 or 8 transports packed with units - in times like that you need substantial navy handy.

When invading after the modern era has been going for a while (like in a modern start game) I always put a carrier with jet fighters with the fleet carry in the ground forces to give them air cover after they land - otherwise they'll get hammer by enemy bombers and fighters. I notice the AI's don't tend to do that - they tend to have carrier/destroyer fleets separte from transport/destroyer/battleship fleets. I don't think this is the best way to go. The AI uses thse carrier/destroyer fleets to wreck economy and resources with the fighters flying from coastal waters over the land. If you have good air defense yourself, the effectiveness of these fleets is minimal, and you can take them down after dealing with the transport fleets. I think combining air power with the transport fleets is much more effective.

Ancient era starts I play that actually make it to the modern era don't tend to feature naval action much at all though - the AI's always seem to take a while in the modern era to develop a decent navy, and that makes modern naval battles in games that started in the ancient era a bit ho-hum. That's why I enjoy modern start games - it give the AI a chance to provide some entertainment with modern units! :)

A fleet for me usually consists of:

1 Carrier
1 Battleship
2-3 Destroyers

So I will usually have 2-3 of these patrolling the oceans, as well as a couple of Destroyers or Submarines randomly wandering around.

Don't you think Carriers, Fighter Jets, and Stealth Bombers should be expensive as hell costing a good bit of gold (a lot) per turn to keep comissioned but have like 10 times the strength that it has in the game. Because in real life, a U.S. Navy FA18 (Hornet) from a Carrier could take out a whole platoon of Marines in 1 strike. I never played Civ 4 by the way but it looks like Navy/Air Force is overly weak. I don't know, maybe that would be to unfair for the less forginent nations.

Depending on the game and the map type, but right now I've got four fleets with:
3 battleships
3 destroyers
2 carriers
4-5 transports

I have yet to lose a ship or need extra support when I go invading :D

I'm a pacifist (but I never adopt the trait. ever) and don't make war much anyway. The closest I have to a navy in my games is 4-5 battleships and 5-6 destroyers, a few transports and a few subs (no carriers) scattered along the coastal regions of my empire. I prefer to build up land/air armies.

How many Naval Fleets do you have in the modern times?

I have 3 naval fleets and 2 land fleets ;)

I did have 2 destoyers and a battleship but i lost the 2 destroyer to the AI destroyers. Fortunately the AI retreated the destroyer to a city i took next turn. :)

I think 4-6 good naval attack ships are required. I prefer destroyers speed for taking out moving AI troops. Battleships are better for clearing pesky destroyers. 50 / 50 odds are not my kinda odds for battle.

I don't usually build much of a navy. In most games with naval invasions, I build enough to take one city, then use the same few transports and escorts to ferry more troops, and then engage in a land war. In my current archipelago game that was taking too long, so I build the naval stack of doom.

Its got 6 battleships, 8 destroyers, 16 transports full of armour, gunships and mech infantry, and 14 carriers full of jets. It's pretty unstoppable... I've yet to find an enemy city I can't take without losses on the first turn.

being a naval junkie i depend heavily on my navy and usually have around 5 large fleets with:

4 carriers with 3 jet fighters
8 destroyers
3 battleships
4 submarines
3 transports

the large number carriers and airpower more then makes up for the lack of ships. i use my submarines as scouts and a fforward screen while the destroyers provide another shell of protection and the battlesships transports and carriers are in the middle.

Wow 14 carriers with jets?? Man I have never had the ability to build that many carriers, especially with jets. Thats certainly a force to be reckoned with. :goodjob:

It all varies with me, the map, my situation, what country I am at war with, the ocean and sea areas. I take a ton of things into consideration. Also, if an AI country has a large navy, I will build more ships even if I am not at war with them, just in case something goes down. Mostly, with modern navies, I prefer several destroyers and a few carriers. Sometimes I will build battleships with transports for invasions, but most of the time I will use destroyers and carriers for that too instead. Oh yeah, I like subs too, I use them for alot of things.

Aggressive and drydocks is a big plus for a good navy :)

How many?

Never enough :D

well I try to build Great Walls of Ships, Destroyers battle ships ect. then I creat 10 Destroyers 5 Battleships 2 Transports. andthat is my standard fleet

I always have

4x battleships
3x destroyers
1x carrier +10x jet's (modded .xml)
2x sub's (depends how i feel as subs don't have too much use now theres no cruise missile)
5x transports (3 full of tanks 2 full of marines)

and I only have 3 fleets, I build them the just place them round the map so any civ can be hit hard and fast if they attack me :goodjob:

i do have little groups of maybe carriers and transports ready but many of my ships are just off my cultural border looking at incoming ships, when i am nt at war, or near my land territory somewhere

if i go to war i group those ships into groups and fleets...

i dont have a specific number of ships in each fleet as it depends on the individual game i am playing...if enemy has a strong navy then i have biiger fleets if not then i have smaller fleets generally
