Civilization 5 – Game of the Month Training Series Game 8
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the eighth game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of new features in Civilization 5 to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these new features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It’s better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition once it starts.

In this game, the designated VC is Science. You may win by any VC you wish, as all VC's are enabled, but the results will be posted with fastest finish by Science victory and then all other VC listed below by fastest time. Good Luck!

In this game you will play as Alexander and lead the Greek civilization to a magnificent victory. It’s a standard sized fractal map played at Emperor difficulty and at standard pace. Science victory is the designated VC for this game, all victory conditions are enabled.

A note for Mac players. Your version of Civ5 is not yet compatible with the Windows version. Results from the two version would not be comparable given the extensive game play changes. We hope your next, next patch comes out soon.

Please note that you are only allowed to build Oxford University one time (has this been fixed yet?). :nono:

Civ V - TSG8 game settings
Playable Civ: Alexander - Greece
Number of AI Opponents: 7
Number of City-States: 16
Map type: Fractal
Map Size: Standard
Difficulty Level: Emperor
Temperature: Temperate
Game pace: Standard
Game options: Quick Combat and Policy saving are disabled. Promotion saving is enabled.

Playing as Alexander, you possess Hellenic League. Your City-State Influence degrades at half and recovers at twice the normal rate.. You can train Companion Cavalry, which replaces the Horseman. The unit is weak to Spearmen but faster, has a higher Combat Strength and helps to produce Great Generals more quickly than the Horseman which it replaces. You can also train The Hoplite, which replaces the Spearman. The Hoplite specializes in defeating mounted units. The unit has a higher Combat Strength than the Spearman which it replaces.

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Game In Progress thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play.

After Action Report thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! Please use the new submission page to submit your final .Civ5Save file, saved AFTER the victory ceremony if you were not conquered (using the "Lemme play one more turn" feature.). We have the beginnings of a parser working that will check your game saves.

We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the three week period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after three weeks, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

This game runs for two weeks and ends Monday 21 March 2011.

The Save can be found here.

I'm thinking - settle in place and build the NC before settling new cities.

You don't have to win at all. :p

But winning by a science victory allows us to compare dates and scores of submissions, so the results will be listed with Science victories first, followed by the rest.

Good Luck.

Please do not forget to post in the In progress and After Action thread to compare with others on how you did. :)

Played Civ3 a lot, but never tried a GOTM, and I figure it's about time I get to it. This should be interesting, I've never played as the greeks, and I usually play on Epic pace, but why not give it a shot? sounds like fun!

Downloading the save now - Thank you minecraft for teaching me how to do this =P

Is there any way I can enable the quick combat feature in this game?

Sorry, none that I know of.

That is really to bad. Especially with the combat centric civs we are playing lately.
It makes me not finish most GotM games, which is really to bad.

What is the reasoning behind not enabling it by the way. I think there are more supporters of the feature then the other way around.

Is there any way I can enable the quick combat feature in this game?

My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\config.ini

; Set to 1 to disable Combat system
Combat = 1

thanks Dave, should have just checked the config file myself :)

Just finished the game, I'll be posting my AAR tomorrow, as well as some interesting/frustrating things I learned. But its 1:36 in the morning right now and I really must be off to bed.

I must say this is the best game of civ I have player, even overshadowing my days of glory in C3C! And I think for some reason unknown to me its because it was a GOTM ( and my first ever GOTM ;)) I don't know how I'll turn out in the standings, but at least by my Civ5 standards that was the best victory I Have had by a longshot.
