fountain of youth - SUPER IMBALANCED!

I have seen it on the lakes map several times and when Spain first came out as a DLC I used to see the FOY and Eldorado quite often, I was of the opinion that not including Spain in the starting line up would put an end to these wonders but I still see them from time to time.
I would think that due to all the uproar involving these two wonders, one of the patches may have toned down the frequency of their appearance!
Oh! and for what it's worth, as fun as they might be I am of the opinion that they are too much of a game changer.

How ironic is this: I posted two days ago about how I hadn't seen it for more than a year, and today I found it about 12 hexes south of my empire!

Spain and Carthage are in the way, so unless I go full-on war, I won't have access to it, but I thought it was funny that it shows up days after I said I hadn't seen it in 18 months...

If you like that kind of thing, go play i wanna be the guy or kaizo mario and let the rest of us have a real game.

Just a minor note. The notion that Fountain of Youth is an overpowered gamebreaker remains a purely subjective opinion, and embracing a different opinion on the topic is no different than preferring dark chocolate to milk chocolate.

The game, as it exists, contains the Fountain of Youth as described. Therefore, those who want to play the "real" Civilization 5 are those who have a Fountain of Youth. The "real" game you speak of is in fact a figment of your imagination, and does not exist. What you describe constitutes only a desire for what could be, rather than what is.

So telling someone who has expressed merely his personal opinion on what actually is, to "go play some other game while us serious people play a game that doesn't exist" seems a little misguided.

I've only seen the FoY once or twice in all the Civ5 games i've played and it's never been in my territory.

As for El Dorado, i've see it about 10-15 times and again its never been in my territory. And every time I have seen it it's been owned by a CS.

I think an interesting scenario game would be to be parked in the middle of a Pangaea landmass playing an OCC game with the FoY and El Dorado along with other good resources by your only city. I've never played an OCC game on Pangaea at all so this could be interesting.

I've had the Fountain only once, and it was wonderful.

Now the only problem is when I see the other crap wonders, I'm always a little disappointed. :-(

lol, you responded to a comment 2 years old. im not even sure the guy is still on the forums. i doubt he'll get your rebuttal.

edit: just checked his profile and is still currently active. maybe he will see it.

I sent my Greek Trireme out to explore and found the Fountain of Youth half way around my huge, Archipelago map. I immediately spent my savings on a settler and sent the unit off into my barely known world. About a third of the way it met up with one of my two Hoplite explorers (warriors who found advanced weapons) which was put to the task of scouting ahead for the settler, looking for free paths, hopping the settler onto land or sea when threats materialized. About two thirds of the meandering way, and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, I let my hoplite escort rest and heal, and moved my settlers out into the ocean, with the only land ahead an island city-state. Out popped an injured barbarian galley! I thought the poor settler was lost along with all that investment of time and treasure. However, some time before, I put the trireme on auto-pilot to return home. And there it was, just in range, waiting for me to end my turn so it could continue on. I took control of the ship and crushed the red galley. The rest of the trip was uneventful, with both the hoplites and the trireme escorting the settler the rest of the way. It wasn't Lord of the Rings, but the trek was suspenseful and risky, and finally getting my settler there a personal triumph.

Civ isn't primarily about fairness, or out-smarting a rather stupid AI. It's about entertainment. And including high value assets like the fountain can add a very entertaining element to the game.

tbh i feel that the FOW actually seems kinda underpowered...
Not sure why the 10 extra happiness and heal double rate is a big deal if i m not spain
i rather have the 2 barrier reefs on my borders or even king solomon mines/victoria

Wow. I hadn't seen this thread ever, so I looked when it was started. Christmas Eve 4 years ago dang. That's some serious revival. Anyway I don't think the fountain is OP when you look at Lake Victoria or the Great Barrier Reef. Although I can imagine that it would be some serious city spam if Spain got a hold of it. Also it's unrealistic yeah, but so is El Dorado, XCOM squads, instant communication at the ancient era, immortal rulers, a city that is more productive simply because there is a mine near it, & Giant Death Robots which have been here since Vanilla. Although to be fair I do love GDRs dearly.

what about Kings Soloman's mines as Spain?

12 hammers early on! I've never had it though.

All these wonders all seem to be in City States anyway

The thread was apparently moved next to the Fountain of Youth.

Wah wahhhhhhhhhhh. :lol::lol::lol:

Seriously, it is still a topic worthy of discussion. Though IMHO the Fountain is so rare it doesn't effect things. And if you overexpand to get it early in BNW, you're going to end up regretting it.

I can't hardly remember when I last saw the FoY and I basically CAN'T remember when it wasn't in some city-state's territory.

Yeah, I think I have only seen it in 2 of the MANY games I have played. I think the most common are Grand Mesa, Barringer Crater and Great Barrier Reef. Though lately, Mt Kalaish appears more often.

I get Mt Sinai an awful lot as well, more often as Kalaish. IIRC there was a certain chart of how often wonders would appear, was there not?

I think I have seen this wonder exactly three times so far. I miss it.

For me, finding the fountain is a gamebreaking event. The game is way too easy with it.

I don't mind AI finding it, though. They don't seem to be able to properly utilize it. Furthermore, Spain is not an issue. The civ is rather weak and even though a single natural wonder helps them a lot, they are still way behind their opponents.
