The Touhou Mod Development Thread

First, I want to thank you for putting faith in us :), the more faith the more powerfull we grow (lame reference).
Eee, someone else noticed us!
I've been a Touhou fan for a while, and the Civilization series is just very good fun. In fact, the first mod I downloaded for Civ IV was Touhou Jojishi, and the first mod for Civ V was the Remilia Scarlet faction. A total conversion of Touhou civs for Civ V is my dream.

I'd really love to get ahold of some of the unit models from Touhou Jojishi, though. However, from the sounds of it, converting Civ IV models to Civ V is akin to pulling teeth

I don't mean you have to convert them directly, but if that's possible, it's worth a try. What I meant is basically designing your models from scratch based on what the Civ IV models appear as.

About not replacing the vanilla civs, Graan's Scarlet Estate, Huitzil's Great Fairy Alliance and Palace of Earth spirits replace some vanilla civs, so I'm afraid it's impossible to have ALL the vanilla civs in-game

That's rotten luck right there. Well, if it turns out to be anything like Jojishi, I'm guessing there will be 9 touhou civs in all, which leaves space for a few good real-life civs to operate. I don't know which civs are most worth saving, but I'd say try to save the ones that are the most popular (examples would include Rome, the British Empire, Napoleon's France, etc and so on).

Voice actors? That is looking too far I think, but if we get far enough in this, I guess it's kind of possible.
That will probably have to wait a loooooong ways down the road... I wouldn't know where to start in looking for something like that!

Well, of course the actual programming and graphic design takes precedent over auxiliary features like voice acting and such. But if there are enough resources left over from this project, voice acting would be a nice place to put them. And if voice acting becomes a very real possibility, it's only a matter of finding willing VAs with good mics to record audio scripts.

I'm almost done with my Kappa civilization, but I must figure a way to make rivers work as a feature I can add a trait to (kind of like the fallout in huitzil's Utsuho mod). For the time being I'll upload the music tracks that my mods use. Move the peace and war folders to a Touhou main folder along with the streamed music, and lastly add the XML files to the sound XML folder (replace the audio and 2Daudio files, they just add lines, not remove them). That should be it for now.

That download link doesn't work for anyone but you, because "myfiles" will only show your files when logged in as you.

One of the reasons I didn't want to do the "adding sound scripts for custom leaders" method and instead opted to replace Suleiman and Askia was I thought it was too much hassle to make it work on the user's end. Copying text into an XML file isn't THAT much work, but even things that "aren't that much work" cause a lot of people to just give up and not do it. But I'm running out of civ leaders I hate (seriously Suleiman and Askia are garbage), and everyone else is doing the no-replace method, so I should probably get on board.

I think, what we ought to do, instead of making the player add or copy XML files with every new mod, is make one modified XML file (of each type) that creates audio definitions for every character we think we might want to make a civ for, and then like twenty more for good measure, and say "Copy these files into /expansion/sounds/XML if this is the first Touhou mod you are installing. After that, you should be good no matter what other Touhou mods you download or we release in the future." I'd certainly be more comfortable with releasing the non-replacer mods if I knew the game file editing to make them work was only a one-off thing.

Well, right now I'm looking up information on how to mod Civ V files, so if possible, I can help where needed with any of the minor nuisances like voice scripting and non-replacement civ coding.

Yes, I like this a lot. A universal audio code for all Touhou civs would make things much easier.

Probably a good plan...

Besides, I thought it was hilarious when Askia was telling me how much of a good friend Cirno was. :p

Oh crap I was afraid that would happen, editing the link ASAP!

The master XML audio file sounds good on paper, but we'll have to make a lot of plans for future mods and make sure no mod repeats itself. I never disliked a single civ, sometimes I like to lower the difficulty and "protect" smaller civilizations that can hardly defend themselves, wich is normally my case with suleiman. SULEIMAN!

We wouldn't have to so much "plan" the future mods as just make a list of everyone who might conceivably be a leader, and throw in a few non-named ones for a margin of error (like a "THfourteen" for whoever ends up being the boss of Double Dealing Character)

New Touhou civilization, yay  (This took longer than necessary now that I think about it)
This time it's Nitori Kawashiro from Kappa States. Here's the usual list:
- Adds Kappa states and Nitori Kawashiro as new civ/leader
- UA: (I had a lot of problems with this one, I wanted to make a playstyle based around rivers, but they're not easy, so the rivers win this round and I made the trait work with marsh) Units on a marsh gain +65% defense at the cost of -50% attack power. Great scientist spawn at double rate.
- UU: Cucumber Warhead, replacing the guided missile.
- UI: Marsh Laboratory, yields +3 science. Can only be built on a marsh.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
- This mod has custom leader music, but it isn't just download and play, read the instructions in the music folder
- About the ambiance music, Kappa States is supposed to work with a Touhou music folder I created, so it's linked to that, if you want the usual ambiance soundtrack you'll have to go to the civilization.xml folder and change the soundtrack tag from "Tengu" to any civ you want music from.
- Because of file upload limits there is 3 files you have to download: one of them has the mod itself, the other one has one of the custom leader tracks (Music and Nitori War, (music has the instructions)). Open the one with the track and place it one the music folder, then place the music folder inside the mod file (you're smart, you can do it!).
- Needs G&K to work.

That's about it, there is a small 90% possibility that I missed something, and I'd appreciate you telling me.

Suggestions, questions or bugs in replies. :D

Before you correct me about this, TYPOS ARE LIKELY TO BE FOUND, since I didn't check in detail the text, and I'll replace ' with the strange command other occasion.

:goodjob: Marvelous. Now I can have 5-way danmaku battles (Scarlet, Tengu, Fairy, Kappa, and my own custom civ). It's only a matter of time before I can have danmaku battles with participants totaling in the double digits. I'm so giddy about this :D

No worries friend, I usually take it upon myself to scrutinize every mod I download for typos, which I then swiftly correct. I'm OCD like that

Hmm, I actually thought of a suggestion for how to make a trait that improved cities built on rivers instead of river tiles. If you set the civ to get a free building every city, and set that building to require the city be built on a river, will it only show up in cities built on rivers, or will it still give it out free to every city?

What about Okuu / the Palace of Earth Spirits, huh?

ALSO ALSO: Eientei doesn't have enough spy names. Kaguya is the figurehead, Eirin is the actual leader, so that leaves Tewi Inaba, Reisen Udongein Inaba, and Reisen II to be spies. Can I fill the rest in with various moon- or rabbit-related names like Usagi Tsukino and Mel Blanc, or do they need a more consistent theme, like "names off this list of Famous Playboy Bunnies"?

Sadly, I've not been able to get my hands on that one. Circumstances beyond my control don't allow the subscribe feature on Steam to work properly, so my only hope is to direct download it.

I'd recommend Japanese-sounding moon- or rabbit-related names. Fits with Touhou much better than playboy bunnies.

Well, I would love to upload it, but the forum keeps giving me the "no security token" error message. I don't suppose someone else could zip and upload it to see if it works for them?

Also, I have discovered that filling out the Tradition policy tree does not give you a BUILDINGCLASS_AQUEDUCT. It gives you a BUILDING_AQUEDUCT. So if you want a civ's UB to replace the Aqueduct, you pretty much can't do that, because they'll stack.

Also, having 80% of the food left over after making a new Citizen is really, really good.

I think you need to check your security and protection settings for whatever browser you use and lower them temporarily while uploading.
If that doesn't work, try increasing your timeout connection window or just upload it to a third party site and link it from there.

I was actually previously working on a Touhou mod myself. It was to be all inclusive, containing 10 civs based on the original Touhou Jojishi from Civ4 (the 10th being the Ten Desires civ) with leader traits generally based on what civs/leaders had in that mod.

The leaders were to be "balanced" by each one being very powerful, as per classic Gensokyo powerlevel warfare; Eirin would get mad science/growth/specialist bonuses, Koishi would get free courthouses/minimal resistance and would have an Rome/ICS playstyle, Cirno would have lower science and weaker unit strength but can mass units really fast and extremely cheap upkeep, Reimu would get majorly increased gold in cities and would have extremely powerful Customs Houses, etc.
Unique units and buildings were initially going to be 1 unique wonder/building that would be very powerful and 1 unique "Boss Unit" that would replace a typical unit - a Momiji that is a super-mobile Longswordsman or a Yukari that would essentially gap via Paratrooper mechanics, for example. Later on as I would do more research and learned how to use Lua or DLL modification better, I would shift back to individual civ techs and single boss units that would upgrade as you go through the ages just like the original mod.

I just kinda stopped working on it, largely because I'm not great with modding. Perhaps a bit too ambitious on my regard. I still work on it very very occasionally, though...

Then again, thanks to the sudden influx of Touhou mods, I'm kinda getting interested in trying to work on it again :)

Penopat, we'd be happy to invite you to this modding project we have going on. Right now we seem to be focused with making each civilizattion one at a time, and any help or ideas you can provide would be very useful.

Reimu?

Getting INCREASED gold?

What Touhou are YOU talking about?

I agree, I'd rather Reimu have an ability like "Convert Gold to Faith" or something like that.
