Soooooo.

Been plodding away for 6 months working up to Immortal. All been on standard settings and whilst I'm still a pretty weak player, at least the first 100 turns or so are getting stronger.

Anyway, was wanting to try some larger maps and longer pace games and looking for any helpful advice to ease the process.

Thanks troops!

The part of big maps that makes them tricky at high difficulty is the need to attack opponents that are ahead of you to prevent them from winning the game too fast. On huge/immortal, for example, there is usually an opponent whom you have not even come in contact with that is pretty far ahead of you by the time the world congress is founded (and you get your first look at their scores, especially science). You will have to delve into the art of the bribe to win under these circumstances. Problem is, you can't count on AI to be good at doing this. Sometimes you will just have to take out a capital even if you are pursuing a nonviolent win con.

EDIT: ooh, clarity: I mean that you will have to bribe AIs to attack other AIs. It's in the trade screen.
